Pack of Trouble

Page 31

by D. M. Turner

Sophia waited until she and Ian were alone to speak, keeping her voice low so she didn’t wake the teenager on the couch. “Where’s Brett?”

“He’ll be inside in a bit. He’s putting Clara’s body in the garage.” He glanced at the platters of cookies on one counter. “You’ve been busy.”

“You’ve been gone a long time. Kelly and I decided to keep ourselves occupied.”

He rounded the counter and closed the distance between them to draw her into his arms with a ghost of a smile. “More like, you decided to keep her occupied, I suspect.”

  She only smiled.

Any hint of pleasure vanished from his face. “I really wanted things to turn out differently.”

She wrapped her arms around his waist and snuggled against him. “Me, too.”

  “There’s been too much death.”

  “I agree.”

“As we were coming back to the house, I thought about a verse from Ecclesiastes. ‘Because in much wisdom there is much grief, and increasing knowledge results in increasing pain.’” He inhaled deeply, his nose against her hair. “The longer I live, the more death and evil I see, and the more I think God lets me see it through His eyes. I think it’s a mercy that humans have such a limited lifespan compared to what they had before the Flood. They have no idea how much grief they’re spared by living only decades.”

Sophia pulled back to look into weary eyes full of sorrow. “That may be true, but you don’t have to carry it alone. As much heartache as living in an evil, fallen world brings, God can show us joy, too.”

Ian’s brows rose. “Since when are you so optimistic?”

She grinned. “Since God saved my life and brought a bossy alpha wolf into it that needs to be taught manners.”

He chuckled. “I’m not that bad.”

“Just keep telling yourself that.” She kissed his chin, the hair of his beard tickling her lips. “First order of business, food. Then sleep.”

“Only if you join me for both.”

Sophia met his gaze and smiled. “That could be arranged.”

“Good.” Ian framed her face with both hands. “Today is a week since we met.”

“Seems surreal, doesn’t it? That it’s only been seven days?”

He nodded. “Things move fast in a werewolf’s world sometimes, especially when it comes to matters of the heart.” He kissed the tip of her nose and sighed, tension bleeding off his shoulders and the muscles down his back that lay under her hands. “I thought never to have a woman in my life again, but God had other ideas. I love you more than I imagined possible in such a short time, a ghràidh.”

“Good thing, ’cause you’re kinda stuck with me. You try to get rid of me now, and I’ll have to hurt you, if the pack doesn’t.”

“Can’t have that, now, can we? You might eat my liver.” That sweet half-grin peeked out.

“I just might.” She nodded emphatically once.

Ian sighed dramatically. “Well, then, I guess I’m your faithful servant.”

“I could get used to that, especially considering the fringe benefits.” In case he didn’t understand the last, she pressed her hips to his.

Heat flared in his gray eyes, and he captured her lips with his.

Yep. He got it. The pack wasn’t up yet. Maybe food could wait.
