Return to the Deep

In the end, Arne still had someone—something—to watch over him.
The thought brought a smile to Huran’s face.
He pulled his mate close and kissed the top of her head. “Thank you for this.”
She gazed up at him looking happier than he’d ever seen her. “Thank you. For trusting me. For loving me. And for believing that we can make it through anything.”
Huran cradled her cheek. “You’re easy to love, snuppa. And I would go through the fires of hell as long as you were with me.”
She raised an eyebrow. “Hell is good, but you might find midnight feedings and poopy diapers a challenge.”
He grinned. “I’m a warrior. I’ve battled tougher things than dirty diapers. Next.”
“The terrible twos. Are you ready for that?”
“I have two years to prepare.” Christienne laughed, hugging him close. But he went stiff when he felt her wince. “What is it?” he asked, pulling back to take a look.
She stared up at him, her brow creased in pain. “You might have exactly two years.” She sucked in a breath, her face twisting in agony.
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying…” She blew out a hard breath. “I think it’s time.”
Huran frowned. “Time for what?”
“Time, Huran. It’s time.”
He blinked at her outburst.
“Time to get me to a hospital.”
“Oh. Oh! Oh, shit.”
Not wasting another second, he lifted her into his arms and headed for his truck, hollering back at the others to let them know what was happening.
Christienne laid her head on his shoulder, breathing through the labor. “Are you ready for this, warrior?”
“For the baby? Of course.”
“For the rest of our lives. Are you ready for that?”
He stared into her eyes, loving how at peace he was deep down in his soul. “I’ve never been more ready. Wait and see, snuppa. Wait and see how I love you and our child. It’s going to be unbelievable. The real question is… are you ready?”
She lifted up to kiss his cheek.
“I’m ready.”
And they lived Mer-ily ever after.
