Looking Behind the Mask: Second Chance Series - Book 2
Page 26
Ellie definitely appreciated her vintage Metallica and Queen T-shirts. But Conner had barely commented on his flannel, plaid pajamas, as he was too busy staring at Ellie with a strange look on his face. From the moment he had walked in and saw her dressed for the party, he had been quiet. He could barely take his eyes off of her. In return, Ellie had studiously ignored him and made sure she kept out of his sphere.
Excited, Honor watched as Lela open her gift. She selected an obvious package. It was a new, full-sized guitar. She flew into Honor’s arms and gave her a big hug. Lela let her tune it before she took it back. She then entertained everyone by playing a song that she had been practicing for weeks. It was simple and sweet, and everyone applauded.
Then Gabriel opened his gift. He looked down in amazement at a wooden box, which had been carved with ornate swirls that he immediately recognized as being similar to the tattoo on Honor’s face, Gabriel knew she had made the box herself. The wood was a mixture of dark brown and auburn tones that somehow swirled together. It had brass fittings and a clasp on the front. When he opened it, he saw a piece of paper rolled up and tied with a red ribbon. He picked it up, removed the ribbon and silently read the words written by the woman he loved:
Gabriel, for most of my life I considered myself lost behind a mask that no one could see behind. The moment I met you, I knew that was no longer true. It turns out that my mask was only ink, and never had any power at all. I allowed it to color my view of the world for far too long. You made me see that regardless of what is on the outside, it’s my decision what is on the inside. You crawled into my soul, and brought me into a world filled with so much love that I nearly ran away in fear. But you were patient and waited for me to believe in that beautiful world. May this box, and anything it holds, represent what true love can accomplish. I love you with my whole heart and soul. Forever, Honor.
Gabriel didn’t read the note out loud, but tucked it back in the box as its first keepsake. He then got down on one knee, right in front of Honor, and with everyone watching, he pulled a ring box out of his pocket and opened it.
“Honor Weston, will you do me the greatest honor and become my wife?”
Without even looking at the ring, Honor threw herself into Gabriel’s arms. “Yes, yes, yes!” she said between kisses. She stopped wondering if she could be any happier. It seemed her heart’s capacity for happiness and joy now knew no bounds.
