  “Can’t believe I missed it.” I laugh. “I’ll look for it in the waiting room at my next doctor’s appointment.”

  “Are you...?”

  I give my head a quick shake. “There’s always January.” I’m afraid to ask the next question, but there’s no way around it. “And the adoption plans?”

  Noreen’s hands tighten on the handle of her shopping cart. “We’ve been seeing a marriage counselor. We need to get our marriage rock solid before we welcome a child into our family.”

  How should I respond? Good? Or I’m sorry to hear that?

  Noreen rescues me. “It’s for the best. The crisis with Hank and Cordy has had an upside for Peter and me.”

  Sean appears with his arms full of gourmet delicacies. He pauses when he sees who I’m talking to, but my bright smile draws him forward. He and Noreen exchange greetings, but then there’s an awkward silence.

  I take the plunge. “We’re having a party next Saturday. We’d love for you and Peter to come.”

  Noreen gives us a mischievous grin. “Shall we bring Cordy along?”

  “No!” Sean and I chorus.

  “Cordy’s had her time in the spotlight,” I say. “The new year belongs to us.”
