Pressing the trigger, I couldn’t help smiling. A beam of red light shot out. Lizzy started to shake. “Oh, what was that?” she mumbled.

Lizzy exploded into nothingness. “You did it, Zara!” Hammy shouted, jumping up and down while clapping.

“No, WE did it,” I said.

Everybody in the field and in the bleachers started stirring. I ran over to Maria. “Maria, do you think you could make everybody except my grandma, your dad and Hammy forget what happened?”

Maria looked at me with crossed eyes. “I’m not sure. I’m not nearly as powerful as I was. But my head is starting to clear, I might have enough energy.” She looked at me. “Lizzy?” she asked.

  “She’s gone,” I said.

Maria clenched her fists and looked upwards. “Everybody who is not Zara, Dad, Grandma Jones or Hammy...stop!”

  The crowd stopped immediately.

Maria started shaking. “This is so hard…” she said. Hammy raced over to us.

  “What’s going on?” Hammy asked.

“Maria is trying to make everybody forget what happened,” I explained.

Maria closed her eyes and I could feel her straining. Then she collapsed onto the ground. Hammy started licking her face, trying to bring her back to consciousness.

“Get off me! Maria demanded. “Hammy your breath stinks! You need to clean your teeth!”

“I’m right now,” Maria said, rubbing her forehead.

I helped Maria to her feet. There was silence for a moment in the crowd. Everyone was sitting still watching Maria, Hammy and I who remained on the field.

Maria dropped her head. “I just don’t have the power to control all these people…” she sighed.

Hammy reached out to her, he put his front paw on her foot.

“Hammy what the heck are you doing?” Maria asked nudging him away.

Hammy rolled off Maria and bounced back to his feet. “I’m helping!” he insisted. “I can increase your power by letting you channel it through me!”

  “Oh,” Maria said.

Hammy ran back and put his paw on Maria’s foot again. The two of them started to glow. They both opened their eyes wide. “Still not enough power!” they said as one.

“Ah, so now what?” I asked.

“Zara, add your power to our power!” they said as one.

I bent down and I can’t believe I did this but I put one hand on Hammy’s behind.

“That tickles!” they said as one.

“Is it working?” I asked. I felt energy surging through me.

Hammy smiled. “This is way cool!” he said.

“This is way cool!” the entire crowd said.

“Did you hear that?” Maria asked.

“Hamsters rule the world,” yelled Hammy.

“Hamsters rule the world,” the crowd echoed.

“Teachers who don’t like hamsters suck!” Hammy said, with a wide toothy grin.

“Teachers who don’t like hamsters suck!” the crowd replied. “Hamsters should be allowed to take art lessons!” was Hammy’s next proclamation.

“Hamsters should be able to take art lessons!” the crowd demanded.

“Ms. Nina thinks I’m cute!” he called. And the crowd replied.

Maria and I looked at each other. “Enough Hammy!” I interrupted, “time to wrap this up.”

“Do we have to, Zara?” Hammy asked in his cutest little hamster voice.

I nodded and winked at Maria. “Forget!” Maria and I said in unison.

“We have forgotten,” the crowd said.

I smiled, Maria smiled and Hammy frowned, he was just getting warmed up.

Chapter 8: All’s Well That Ends Well

Maria’s mind wipe of the crowd worked well. None of them remembered much of what happened. They only remembered Hallow Falls winning the game 5-1, thanks to Lizzy’s amazing playing. After the game, Lizzy just seemed to disappear. Maria told Lizzy’s adoring fans that her family had a medical emergency, and they had to leave for Hawaii straight after the game to look after a sick relative.

Yes, Lizzy just seemed to disappear. Nobody could find her. And even though she wasn’t at the soccer presentation, she was awarded Best Player of the Season. Lizzy would feel so proud of herself, she had achieved all her goals...even if she had to do it as a ghost! Everyone seemed to accept Maria’s explanation. When they talked about Lizzy, only good things were said. In fact, she became a bit of a legend around the schoolyard. Lizzy would have liked that!

When we arrived home, all three of us were absolutely exhausted. We dragged ourselves up the front stairs and flopped onto the sofas in the family room. Within seconds, sleep had almost hit us...when suddenly the lights flashed on, poppers popped and people loudly cheered. “Ghost busters! Ghost busters! Ghost busters! Hip Hip Horay!!!! Grandma put on the Ghost Busters song and everyone was dancing and having a great time. Maria, Hammy and I smiled at each other. “We really do make a great team!” Hammy said, and kissed both of us on the cheek. Maria was right, his breath was putrid.

And that is how my life as a Ghost Buster and zapper began.

  Ghost Buster Manual

Almost everything you need to know about ghosts…

  RULE ONE

Remember, ghosts are the dead who are misplaced. They are in the wrong dimension. They must be sent back. The faster, the better!

  RULE TWO

Ghosts are sneaky, never trust them. Never ever ever. We can’t be clear enough. Never means not at all!

  RULE THREE

Ghosts can choose their forms. They can either appear in their human form with skin or shadow, or they can appear as skeletons.

  RULE FOUR

Some ghosts want to control humans. This is bad. Humans and ghosts should be separated.

  RULE FIVE

The only way to force a ghost go to the next dimension is to zap them.

  RULE SIX

The longer ghosts remains here, the more power they can gain. The more power they get, the more power they need and the more dangerous they become. Power breeds power. Powerful ghosts need to be moved on.

  RULE SEVEN

Ghosts are bad news. Throughout recorded ghost history, only one ghost has ever been really good and super friendly. He was a young ghost named Jasper. His name was later misspelled in common folklore and stories.

  RULE EIGHT

Knowing a ghost’s living name gives you some control over that ghost. They must answer any question you ask them.

  RULE NINE

Ghosts follow no rules besides Rule 8.

  RULE TEN

  Always follow these rules.

  Ghost Zapper Rules

Rule 1: stay in tip top shape...mentally and physically. Video games can be great for keeping your reflexes sharp.

Rule 2: always keep your official ghost hunter stun device and zapper very nearby.

Rule 3: eat your veggies. Okay, this has nothing to do with zapping ghosts, but it will keep your folks happy.

Rule 4: all ghost hunters are teamed with ghost sensors.

Rule 5: always trust your mentor and learn from your mistakes.

Rule 6: never forget ghosts don’t play by the rules...except for Rule 8.

  Steps for Dealing with Ghosts

Step 1: Ghost sensor detects ghost spirit or energy.

Step 2: Hunter and Sensor find ghost.

Step 3: Hunter zaps ghost with zapping device.

Step 4: Repeat steps as needed.

Please note: this is not as easy as it sounds.

Special Note: Remember if you learn a ghost’s name this will give you power over that ghost. If you address a ghost by its real name it must tell you the truth. Some ghosts will even obey you if you know their name.

Extra Special Note: If a ghost remains on Earth too long and had a tragic death it may become a super ghost. Super ghosts are bad news. Just hope you never have to deal with one!
