He turned to see me. I couldn’t decipher his expression. The severity was still there, as it always was. But it was thinly masked by something else. I searched his emotions to see if I needed to be afraid. Or if something bad had happened since we parted the day Eli brought us back from the White House.
He beckoned me forward. “She said you could read it,” he said, then handed me the piece of paper in his hands. As I took it in mine our skin briefly touched. His skin was back to being cool. Not freezing as it normally was. “Read it now,” he insisted, then he walked back inside and closed the door behind him. I stood there alone on his balcony with the piece of paper in my hand. It was a letter.
My dearest Nathaniel,
I know you must be angry with me. I kept so much hidden from you. But please understand it was in service to the vixra. I hold no ill will toward the Matthews for forcing my servitude. Especially now if I can do some good by finding Victor. And please don’t lay blame at Harper’s feet for keeping my secret. She wanted what was best for everyone. I only hope in the future that she learns to occasionally do what is also best for herself. And the same goes for you.
Centuries ago I made the biggest mistake of my life when I left you. I chose a way. And now I must keep to it. I allowed myself to hope for so long that I may one day be granted my freedom and that you and I would find a way toward each other once more. But if you can find happiness with anyone, even if that person isn’t me, I want you to know that you have my blessing and my best hopes for the future.
I will always think of you with pure love and watch over you and Harper. As well as any descendants the two of you may have. You protected and watched over my descendants for centuries. Now let me do the same for you.
With all the love that I possess,
Georgeanna
I folded the letter back up in my hands after having read it twice.
‘Descendants? What does she mean?’
My eyes flashed back to the glass door at Nathaniel watching me from his couch inside. I rushed back in and took his hands into mine. I could hold them. Even more so than when I touched him last.
“Apparently there are some things magic won’t allow to permanently break,” he said to me as he stood up and cupped my face in his hands. “Even a scar vampires have feared for centuries.”
“Do you fear it now?” I asked him, doing my best to hide the fact that there was a sharp pressure building behind my eyes.
He didn’t answer me with words. He pressed his lips into mine and held me close in his strong arms. I could feel his skin getting warmer by the second.
He was becoming mortal. My blood was marking him all over again. The man who invaded my home and put a knife to my throat the first day we met. The man who forced me to do his will. The man who saved me from Isaac. And the man I learned had been watching me and my family for ages, only to discover that I looked like the woman he loved centuries ago. I feared I was stealing him from Georgeanna. That Nathaniel was meant to be hers. And yet, at that moment, all I could think of was how much I wanted him in my life. I wouldn’t be parted from him. I would stand by his side no matter what happened.
I had loved. I had lost. And I found it again only to have it ripped away by a magic ritual. Now it found me once more, offering me a chance at a life I thought was gone forever when Caleb left this world.
Nathaniel broke the kiss and rested his forehead on mine. “Don’t leave this time,” he said.
“I’ve made the mistake of running away in many past lives, Nathaniel. I’m never running away again. You’re stuck with me.”
