Finn smiled and entered the house. “Here, this is for you and Penny.” He held up a bottle of some fancy wine that Penny would probably love.
“Thanks. Did you find the place okay?”
He nodded and we started down the hall together. “Yeah. Thanks again for the invite, Miles. I really appreciate it.”
“Don’t mention it. It’s a full house and the more the merrier!”
I brought him into the living room and clapped his shoulder. “Hey everyone, this is Finn. He’s in the reserves himself and is working as my head mechanic. He basically keeps me from losing my shi—stuff…” I quickly corrected, realizing how many little ears were within the room. “—at the shop.”
Everyone laughed at my near flub and then Colton stepped forward to offer Finn his hand. They met briefly when Colton and Karena had come to the shops grand opening but there had been a hundred other people or more, so it wasn’t likely he remembered him. “Nice to see you again, Finn.”
Okay, maybe he had.
Karena took her turn next and then Lucas and Isla.
“Thanks for inviting me. My family is all on the West Coast and my boss is a real jerk who wouldn’t give me the week off,” he teased, glancing sidelong at me.
I laughed. “I remember it differently…something about you thanking me for sparing you the trip.”
Finn chuckled and everyone joined in. “All right, fine.”
I didn’t know the specifics, but Finn didn’t want the week off, even when I’d offered to take over for him. It wasn’t my place to pry but I had to admit I was curious what was waiting at home that made him want to stay in Georgia for the holidays. For all I knew, he could be the first pledge in my shitty parent’s club.
After the introductions were complete, Finn, Lucas, Colton, and I joined the kids in the living room and caught up with the pregame coverage while the ladies resumed their conversation in the kitchen, helping each other out with the feast.
An hour later, we were all seated around the extra-long table in the dining room, marveling at the amount of detail Penny had put into the table setting. The spread of food was laid out thoughtfully with a place for every dish among the decorative touches so we could all dish up family style. We’d made a pact not to be those people with servers in our home for parties and dinners. It just wasn’t us.
“Oh my gosh, Penny. This is amazing,” Karena gushed, eying the spread.
“Thank you. My friend Jasmine, back in New York, is a culinary school grad and she coached me through everything.”
“Well it looks wonderful.”
Penny smiled at me and I squeezed her hand as they rested, linked together on the top of the table.
“Before we get started, I’d like to make a toast,” I said, sweeping to my feet.
“Make toast! Make toast!” Rose clapped. Everyone laughed at her enthusiasm.
“Thank you, Sweet Rose.” I tipped my chin towards her and she giggled. “Thank you to all of you. For being here today. To celebrate as one family with me and my newly minted Mrs. on our first official holiday.”
I paused as the impact of the words hit me. Penny was smiling up at me, her eyes sparkling with pride that made my heart thump and my throat swell.
I cleared my throat. “When this tradition started, it was just the three of us. Lonely, broken Army guys. Here in Georgia and a couple of times, overseas in the middle of some God-forsaken desert wishing for home. Now…” I looked around the table at each and every bright, smiling face. “Well…we’ve expanded a little.”
“You had an Army wives’ invasion,” Karena added. Isla and Penny cheered.
“Thank God!” Lucas added.
“No kidding,” Colton said, smiling at his wife and small daughter. “I’ll toast to that!”
Everyone laughed and I took my seat again. “Cheers everyone!”
I elbowed Finn. “You better watch out, buddy! You just might be next!”
