Will stared at his little brother in amazement. ‘But what will you do in London?’
‘Don’t worry about me. I can find a job that pays good wages. I can learn a trade. Once the sickness has passed there will be plenty of opportunities in London for the young and healthy.’
Adam knew there was another reason for going back to London – Eve. But he wasn’t going to tell Will that.
‘Remember what that strange priest told us about building a new Jerusalem?’ continued Adam. ‘Well, I think that God has saved us so we can help in the great work of rebuilding England. Just imagine – a new Jerusalem without masters and kings and bishops and gallows!’
He jumped out of bed and stood at the door of the cottage. It was cold outside. He shivered, then he smiled. The village green lay crisp and still in the bright winter sunshine. At the far end of the village stood the old bridge. Beyond that lay England, changeless and changed, like a fair field full of people working together as free men and women. And running through the field like a glittering river was the long, long road flowing down to London.
