More than an Otter (Shifty Book 5)

When I hung up, I sat down to take a breather. I had been running around all day, and well, running around a museum all day was more tiring than I’d expected.
I grabbed a water bottle and sipped at it, relaxing for the first time all day.
“Eff, the maintenance guy.” I realized, leaving the water bottle on my desk with the cap still off.
I pulled the clipboard off the wall, hurrying down to the break room for that interview.
“Sorry I’m late.” I stepped inside, looking down at the paper to remind myself which questions I needed to ask. “My name is…” I picked my eyes up from the clipboard and gasped when I saw the man sitting at the table. “Grant?” I could hardly believe he was in front of me.
“Hi.” He stood up, and I stepped back.
“You said you were going to school.” I shook my head. “What are you doing here?”
Grant shrugged.
“I am going to school.” He admitted. “But I want to go to school and date you.” He told me. He sounded completely sure that was what he wanted to do, despite all the ways it could end up going wrong for the both of us.
“We can’t just date each other like nothing ever happened between us.” I bit my lip. “We’re soulmates.” I reminded him.
“Oh, I don’t want to act like we’re humans.” Grant shook his head. “I want us to start over, only this time, we’ll actually try to get to know each other.”
“You want to start over completely?” I asked, my heart starting to speed up. There it was, the redo I had been waiting for.
“Completely.” Grant affirmed. “Are you willing to give it another try?”
“What do you mean?” I bit back a smile. “We just met a few minutes ago.”
Grant grinned and held out his hand.
“I’m Grant.” He offered. “I was in the military for a year and a half, and I’m a country boy who wants to be an engineer.”
“Nice to meet you.” I smiled. “My name’s Kennedy. I like art and history, and I love romantic movies.”
“I know we just met, but will you go to dinner with me tonight?” Grant asked.
“I would love that.” I smiled. “Pick me up at 7?”
“I’ll see you then.” Grant promised.
He pulled me in for a tight hug.
“Thanks for giving us a second chance.” His voice was soft but husky, and I loved it.
“Thanks for taking that second chance.” I replied, lifting my face up to kiss him on the cheek.
While nothing was set in stone, I felt confident that the second time around, Grant and I would do things right. We would fall in love for real, we would accept each other for who were. And while it wouldn’t all be easy, it would be worth it.
When I went back to my office, there was bouquet of flowers on my desk, sitting in a vase. The smile that took over my face was big and completely genuine.
I picked up the card and read,
Kennedy,
Here’s to second chances and stairs that don’t break.
Grant.
Things were already looking up.
Epilogue
So, that’s my story. I know some of you might be saying,
“Wait, what? Grant sucks! He’s the worst mate in the universe, not the best.”
I can see why you think so, but here’s the thing: He was exactly the soulmate I needed. He had dreams and plans, he left when he felt like it was the right thing to do, and came back when he knew he needed to do that.
For some people, Grant would be the opposite of their dreams.
For me, he’s perfect.
So yeah. Everything started with hitting him with the car, and our love story? That was still just the beginning of our life together.

About Me
I'm married to the koolest kid in town, and we basically spend our time adventuring and nerding out over things we won't admit to being into. We live in Idaho Falls, Idaho, which is... a place. And it's windy-- really windy.
I'm usually either writing up a storm on my handy dandy writing chair, reading inspiring quotes on Pinterest, or out some place with my man. I also dabble in the art of singing (though I never do it well) and do hair occasionally, but those are more of hobbies. I'm obsessed with leggings, muddy buddies, and garlic salt, and I'll never turn down a good back massage.
Finally, as you've maybe discerned, I'm a writer. Completely, totally, and unapologetically. I'm a writer because I love to write, and I love to write because it makes me a better me. Writing reminds me of the good in the world and helps me understand myself more.
So yeah. I write.
I write a lot. :D
