When she came seconds after he did, emotions cascaded over her and she wept.

Struggling for his own breath, he held her close.

“I’ll never get enough of you,” came his hoarse whisper in the dark.

“That’s what marriage is all about.”

“Then life is good. Damn good. Sweet. I never knew it could be this way.”

She kissed his feverish cheek and then his sweaty throat where his pulse beat madly. “We’d better go see about Vanilla before we go home.”

He pulled her against him even tighter. “I want more children.”

“Then I have good news for you.” Her voice held a lilting note.

  “What?”

“Yes.” She paused. “Maybe we’ll have a little boy this time.”

He nuzzled her throat. “Did I ever tell you I love you?”

“A few times, I believe. But I’ll never tire of hearing it. Not even when I’m a very old lady with dozens of grandchildren and you’re sitting in a rocker on the porch right beside me.”

“Funny thing, I used to dread the thought of growing old. If you’re with me, a rocker doesn’t sound half bad.”

“Just goes to show you how your perspective can change.”

He placed his hand on her stomach, and then he kissed her one final time before they left together to see about Vanilla.

“A little boy,” she said. “I hope he has blue eyes, and looks exactly like you.”
