“Lucy.” I shushed her, kissing her forehead. “I can forgive you. All you have to do is taste my Heath bar.”
Giggling, she smacked my arm and chastised me. “Way to ruin the moment.”
“Ow!” I laced my fingers with hers before pinning her underneath me. “The moment will never be ruined.” She accepted my kiss and soon her body was arching up into mine, seeking me out.
“I have a confession, too.” Pulling back I looked at her. “I never opened the paperwork.”
“Wait, but you said…”
“I lied. I was hurt and wanted to hurt you back.” I knelt up and she pulled me back down. “You’re my match, no matter what that paperwork says. I only want you.”
“Burn it. I want that paperwork burned.”
“Consider it done.”
“You’re mine and that’s all that matters.”
Smiling and holding my face in her hands she stilled her eyes on mine. “I see you, Heathcliff Daniel Kerrigan. I know who you are. Your breath is my life and you’re the only one who knows who I am. You own me, always have.”
My heart imploded with her words. I knew which song she was referring to and knew that all the pain and waiting we’d gone through was worth it. She was mine and she finally understood that I’d always been hers.
~ EPILOGUE ~
~ HEATH ~
The week after Independence Day, we sat on the beach at the lake house. Our families had all been up there and had left earlier in the day. The next few days were ours and ours alone. She was reading a book as I tried to not be distracted by her figure in a bikini. Toes curling in the sand, I took a swig of my beer and dropped my head back against the chair.
“Get your head out of the gutter, Heathcliff.”
“How do you know it’s in the gutter? You’re the one reading that smut.”
Eyeing me mischievously, she retorted, “It’s damn good smut!”
“Hmph, well, it’s taking away from my smutty time with you.”
Setting down her e-reader she smirked, “But it’s giving me so many good ideas of how to be smuttier with you.”
“Well in that case, read on.” Before I knew it, she was in my lap and attempting to tickle me. “When are you going to give up? I’m not ticklish.”
“Never. And yes you are.”
Her hand reached between my legs and found the one spot that always sent me reeling. High up on my inner thigh was about the only place I was ticklish.
Prying her hand away as I squirmed she giggled when I started tickling her in return. After a few minutes of messing around she wrapped her arms around my neck and burrowed into me.
“I love it here and I love you.”
“Love you, too, baby.” Running my hands up and down her back I couldn’t help but think about little Lucys and Heathcliffs running the beach with us. “Have you thought anymore about having a baby?” Our families—mostly our mothers—had been relentless the past week wanting to know when we were going to have kids.
I felt her take a deep breath as she turned her head. Talking into my neck, she revealed, “I think about babies all the time, but we’re still so young. We have time.” Sighing she reminded me, “You said once you weren’t ready to share me with our baby. I feel the same way. What about you? Have you thought about what I said?”
I wasn’t going to push her about having a baby and I was happy to keep her all to myself, for now. But I also loved the idea of her pregnant and couldn’t wait for that step in our journey. As to her question, I had thought about it a lot.
“You really think we should open a gym up here? It’s a long drive.”
“I love it up here. O’s taking the reins of the Montrose gym and can help out with the others too. We could run one up here and go down there on weekends.”
“What about your friends and your job?”
Leaning back, she smiled, “They’ll always be there and I can find a part time hygienist job up here if need be.”
Observing her, I was proud to call her mine. “Ok. I’ll talk to Will. We’ll start scouting locations.”
“Really?”
“Yes. I’m sure mom and dad won’t mind us staying here until we get a gym up and off the ground!”
She jumped off my lap and did a cartwheel in the sand as I laughed at her. Standing to join her, she jumped on my back as we walked down the beach, her clinging to me.
“Heath,” she sweetly whispered in my ear, “about the baby...” That got my attention, “let’s go practice!”
“You just wanna taste my heath bar.” She pinched my nipple as we laughed. “Who am I to deny you?” I carried her all the way back to the house where we practiced the rest of the day and night, only stopping to refuel.
Lucy Roberts Kerrigan. I stared at her as she slept while music played softly. All I Want by Dawn Golden echoed my feelings.
She stirred and her eyes barely opened, “Stop staring at me and go to sleep.”
She rolled over and curled her back into my chest. Memories of us as kids filtered through my mind. I’d always been enamored with her, but it wasn’t until that summer eleven years ago when I’d fully fallen for her. It’d taken all our trust, honor, and love to reach the place we were at now. And I wouldn’t change a thing. She was my world and the only thing I needed in this life was her love.
The End…for now
