The Prophecy
I saw the great sword come down from Eden,
having the key to the bottomless pit.
And he laid hold of the dragon
when a thousand years had expired.
The devil that deceived them
was cast into his lake of fire
and tormented day and night for ever and ever.
Chapter One
“Hi, Appa.”
My daughter’s words drove me to my knees. I looked down at her from the top of the hill. Dark hair, same as her mother’s. Black eyes, same as mine.
I sat back on my heels, my heart throbbing in my chest. “What…how?” I swallowed, and my throat was coated with sandpaper. “How did I not see this?”
We’d been in Nulterra for two days. Two days. But somehow, seventeen years had passed on Earth. Iliana, who’d only just had her first birthday when I left, was now an adult standing before me.
Someone retched.
I turned and saw Fury spewing water and bile over our “graves.” Her sister, Anya, was holding Fury’s hair back.
Iliana started toward us cautiously. When she reached the hilltop, she knelt down in front of me. “I knew you weren’t dead.” She put her arms around my neck and hugged me.
My stunned arms finally wrapped around her. “Is it really you?”
“It’s really me.”
I held the back of her head against my shoulder. Her hair was silky and smooth, just like Sloan’s. I closed my eyes. “You led us out.”
I felt her nod.
She pulled back. “You’d been gone so long. None of us could see you or feel your spirit, but I knew. You promised me you’d come back.”
Tears brimmed my eyes. “You remember that?”
“I remember everything.” She hugged me again. “I knew you’d keep your word.”
“I always will.” The tears erupted then. My god. I’d missed everything. All I’d wanted was to get the sanctonite stone so I could be with her. So I could be part of her life. So I could watch her grow up.
Now I had the stone, but suddenly, Iliana was a woman. No longer the baby I’d just kissed goodbye. And it had happened overnight—for me, anyway.
She stood, pulling me up with her.
I took a step back and dried my eyes. “Well, let me have a look at you.”
Iliana was taller than Sloan, the extra height in her long, lean legs. She wore a pale-pink T-shirt and athletic shorts with hiking boots.
The hair was the reason I’d mistaken her for her mother. It was almost the same length as Sloan’s the first time I’d seen her, a memory that would be eternally burned into my mind. It was long and wavy, a dark river perfectly framing her slender face.
Unlike Sloan, Iliana had the faintest of freckles across the bridge of her small nose. And she had my mother’s smile.
I hugged her again, unable to stop myself.
“What about the others?” Fury asked, her voice raspy and shaking.
Iliana stepped back, then extended her hand toward Fury. “You’re Jett’s mom, aren’t you?”
A puff of air squeezed from Fury’s chest. “You know him?”
“Sure I do.” Iliana jerked her thumb over her shoulder. “He’s here.”
Behind her, a few more bodies emerged from the jungle’s tree line. Two angels and three humans.
“I asked them to let me come out first,” she said. “They allowed me to have my moment.”
Of course they did. She commanded them, or at the very least, she commanded the angels. And I suspected the humans were under her as well, as part of her personal protection detail, SF-12. Almost all of them were armed, but from our distance, none of them, I recognized.
And how could I after seventeen years?
Seventeen years.
Acid burned in my stomach.
The two angels were both male. They were about the same height. Both young, around Iliana’s age. One had straight blond hair sweeping his forehead. The other’s was dark, nearly black, and unruly.
His eyes and Fury’s were locked on each other.
Jett.
I touched Fury’s arm. She was trembling.
“You can go see him if you’d like,” Iliana said.
I stroked Fury’s wrist with my thumb. “Want us to go with you?”
Fury shook her head, then reached back for her sister. I nodded, and she started down the hill first with Anya right behind her.
Reuel and Samael stayed with me. Reuel was still holding Hannah’s hand, the little girl we’d rescued from Nulterra. She was, for lack of a better word, a ghost.
Iliana bent in front of the child. “Salak,” she said, greeting her in Katavukai, the language of the angels.
Hannah beamed, then hid sheepishly behind Reuel’s big hand.
Iliana straightened, looking up—way up—at Reuel, a giant guardian angel and one of my closest friends. “Hi, Reuel. Good to see you again.”
The guardian angel looked as bewildered as I felt, and I swear, tears sparkled in his eyes. “Salak, Iliana.” He knelt on one knee at her feet, bowing his head. “The Daughter of Zion,” he said in perfect English.
With a laugh, she touched his hair. “No need for all that.” He looked up, and she opened her arms. “I will take a hug though.”
He stood and pulled her against his massive chest.
When Reuel released her, Iliana raised a finger, pointing beyond him. “Who’s he?”
I looked over. “Oh, that’s Torman. One of the fallen who—”
Iliana’s hand shot forward, and Torman was ripped off the ground. The demon screamed, suspended in the air. Her other hand touched her ear. “Rogan, we’ve got one.”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa.” I put my hands up. “This one is with us.”
Iliana looked at me, confused.
“In exchange for safe passage out of Nulterra, Torman helped us escape.” I stepped toward her. “I gave him my word, Iliana.”
She held my gaze until the angel with blond hair joined her, passing Fury and her sister beside the entrance to Nulterra. It had returned to its closed state: a giant salt mirror in the middle of the Island of Fire.
The angel—I assumed he was the guardian Rogan I’d heard so much about—exchanged a nod with Reuel when he reached us.
“Who did you say this is?” Iliana asked me.
“Torman.”
Iliana looked at Rogan, then flashed her eyes toward Torman. “What can you tell me?”
“Torman is Chimera’s father,” Rogan said, a muscle twitching in his jaw.
Iliana seemed to squeeze Torman tighter. Then she pulled him through the air to us and set him down in front of her. “Seize him.”
