Darkest Night

by Jenny O'Brien

All the characters in this book only live in my imagination but I have been given permission to use a few names. FLO Amy Potter, who appeared first in Silent Cry, is an amazing nurse and a dear friend. Sue Sullivan, also a nurse, has left us to move to Wales. I wish her well. Christine de Bertrand (what a great name for a character) is a fellow all-year-round sea swimmer. There’s also Deborah Miles, another author, who won a competition to feature as one of my characters: I hope you like her, Deborah? For the opportunity to enter one of my competitions why not follow me over on Facebook? My page is called Jenny O’Brien Guernsey Writer.

Talking of Wales, it is a while since I lived there so a big thanks to my sister, Caroline, for helping me with the research. Hope to pop home soon x

I try to keep the strands of my life separate. My writing. My nursing. My family, and rarely talk about the latter two. But as a practicing nurse, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the team that I work with. The last few months have been particularly difficult on our ward, but my colleagues have been absolutely amazing – to put it mildly, they have worked their socks off to help keep Guernsey safe. And yet each day they come into work with a smile on their face and ask about how my book sales are doing. We have ‘clap for carers and keyworkers’ but this is my personal tribute to Ollie Bain-Brehaut, Sergio Ferreira, Lauren Mason, Viki Brouard, Anne Friend, Gina Billien, Vanessa Steer, Catarina Capitao, Connie Vasconcelos, Gill Barton, Sarah-Jane Walters, Shane Mechem, Annette Brazil-North, Anna Mpawaenda, Holly Allen, Bridget Martin, Paula Reid, Judith Malan, Lesley Goodenough, Tiago Pereira, Tina Bichard, Lim Kwai, Maria Andrade, Kelly Hamlin, Denise Hooley, Nadia Santos, Daniela de Silva, Claudia de Luza, Celia Ferreira, Nellie AngelKova, Cath Dyer, Kim Kyoni and, of course, Amy Potter.

With regards to Jax’s speech dysfluency, or stutter. I work with an amazing bunch of speech therapists at work but also have personal experience of this issue. A special thank you to therapist, Jo Lamb. You truly are amazing.

Finally and not least, thank you to my family. Working from home is never easy but when the house is full of three teens homeschooling and a husband squirreling away on his laptop, it has been particularly stressful. We’ve got through it and we’re still talking. I’m not sure what else there is to say about that – the usual buns for tea x
