One Thousand and One Dark Nights
Once upon a time, in the future…
I was a student fascinated with stories and learning.
I studied philosophy, poetry, history, the occult, and
the art and science of love and magic. I had a vast
library at my father’s home and collected thousands
of volumes of fantastic tales.
I learned all about ancient races and bygone
times. About myths and legends and dreams of all
people through the millennium. And the more I read
the stronger my imagination grew until I discovered
that I was able to travel into the stories... to actually
become part of them.
I wish I could say that I listened to my teacher
and respected my gift, as I ought to have. If I had, I
would not be telling you this tale now.
But I was foolhardy and confused, showing off
with bravery.
One afternoon, curious about the myth of the
Arabian Nights, I traveled back to ancient Persia to
see for myself if it was true that every day Shahryar
(Persian: شهريار, “king”) married a new virgin, and then
sent yesterday's wife to be beheaded. It was written
and I had read, that by the time he met Scheherazade,
the vizier's daughter, he’d killed one thousand
women.
Something went wrong with my efforts. I arrived
in the midst of the story and somehow exchanged
places with Scheherazade – a phenomena that had
never occurred before and that still to this day, I
cannot explain.
Now I am trapped in that ancient past. I have
taken on Scheherazade’s life and the only way I can
protect myself and stay alive is to do what she did to
protect herself and stay alive.
Every night the King calls for me and listens as I spin tales.
And when the evening ends and dawn breaks, I stop at a
point that leaves him breathless and yearning for more.
And so the King spares my life for one more day, so that
he might hear the rest of my dark tale.
As soon as I finish a story... I begin a new
one... like the one that you, dear reader, have before
you now.
Chapter One
Amber Davis inserted the key into the lock and opened the door to her new home, a simple one-story ranch that represented a whole new life in a brand-new state.
“Surprise!”
She jerked back, startled, as she realized the most important people in her life were there to greet her.
“Uncle Landon!” Her ten-year-old son, L.J., dashed past her and ran into his uncle’s arms. Landon’s twin, Levi, who’d passed away before she’d known she was pregnant, was L.J.’s father.
Standing beside Landon were Tanner Grayson and Jason Dare, her son’s other godparents, the men who’d made it possible for her to purchase this house with their generosity. When she looked at these three men, who she’d known for the last ten years, she saw three handsome, accomplished guys who’d worked hard to get where they were in life. Who’d overcome pain and hardship and stuck together through it all, including her in their long-term, deep friendship. They were like brothers to her and uncles to her son. With their brown hair in varying shades and muscular forms, at a glance they could be brothers, although on inspection, each had their own distinctive look. They’d only recently found their own happily ever afters and she was so thrilled for them all.
“Welcome home,” Jason said, pulling her into a hug, then passing her to Tanner and then to Landon, who still had his arm around his nephew.
“Can I go check out the rest of the house?” L.J. asked.
Amber nodded, looking around the still-empty space. The movers would be here later this afternoon. “Go for it.”
He dashed off, the echo of his footsteps and shrieks of excitement bouncing off the walls and making her smile.
“What are you guys doing here? You’re supposed to be in Manhattan.” And in a little while, Landon’s parents, L.J.’s grandparents, were due to arrive and take him to the city for his summer adventure, leaving her ready to start one of her own.
“We decide
d to surprise you. Help you unpack and move in,” Landon said with a grin. He’d always been easygoing, even after the tragedy that had befallen all of them.
They never failed to do right by her and she smiled. “You didn’t have to drop everything for me. You already helped enough, lending me the money to buy this place.” Something she felt guilty about already.
“Giving you the money,” they all said at the same time.
She shot them a glare. They all knew how important it was for her to be independent just like she understood why they felt obligated to help her. Not just because Levi had been Landon’s twin but because all three men had been there the night he died in a tragic college hazing incident when the guys were freshmen, and Amber a sophomore, and they felt guilty for not being able to prevent his death.
She’d discovered she was pregnant while she’d been grieving, but the guys had always been there for her. As had Landon’s mom and dad, Carrie and Samuel Bennett, as well as her own parents, Lydia and John, in Florida. When she’d quit college, packed up, and moved home, they’d stepped in to help her raise her son.
“Mom, look at the size of my room!” L.J. called to her.
Laughing, she shot the guys a warning look and headed toward the hallway leading to the two bedrooms in the house, hearing their footsteps behind her.
“Do you like it?” she asked from the doorway of the room across from her own.
“It’s going to be cool. You said we could paint it blue, right?”
“Light blue,” she reminded him. She didn’t want a dark-looking tomb for her son’s bedroom.
“Can I get a Spiderman Fathead?” he asked of the life-size removable wall decal he’d been asking for … for what felt like forever.
“Of course– Oomph.”
Amber had shoved her elbow into Tanner’s side as he answered without asking her.
