“I’d fret more now if you told me I had a month yet,” Irmengarde said with a wry grin. “I’ve had about enough of being so heavy.”
Mrs. McNeal smiled. “Och, I ken it, lass. Well, never ye fret. A few more days, is all. And the weather’s better now.”
“Yes,” Irmengarde agreed. It had been sweltering hot on the farm the last few days, in high summer. Brogan had been out on the fields for hours at a stretch, leaving her confined to bed. It was nonetheless a good feeling.
Irmengarde turned sharply, hearing a creak at the back door. Mrs. McNeal nodded.
“Och, lass. I do think he be back.”
“Sweetling,” a voice called. “How are you?”
“I’ll go out and see how Bonnie’s managing with the beer brewing,” Mrs. McNeal said with a wink. She left the room.
Brogan came in. He stood in the doorway. Irmengarde flushed.
“How are you, my beautiful lass?”
She felt her face light up. “Quite well.”
He came and knelt by the bed, looking up at her face. “It’s grand tae see you.”
“And it’s good to see you,” she said, taking his hand and then leaning down to kiss him. She breathed in the wild outdoor scent of him.
“How do you feel?” he asked, sitting down gently on the bed. She reached for him and he held her tenderly in his arms.
“Tired,” she admitted. “But excited. And happy,” she added.
He smiled back. “Me too, lass,” he said softly in her ear. “Me too. I’m so happy. So very, very happy.”
She leaned on his shoulder and felt his strong arms hold her close. She was happy. In the last months here at the farm, she had found out that she was happier than she had ever been. She had more joy now than she had ever known before.
Because the only duty we owe is the duty to our heart. Riches earned at the expense of joy will bring no happiness.
“I love you, Brogan,” she whispered, as he pressed himself against her, lying down on the bed fully dressed.
He looked up at her, and she felt a tingle of warmth spread through her as he gently stroked a hand down her chest.
“And I love you, too, Irmengarde. I love you with all my heart.”
She closed her eyes as he kissed her. She had never before felt so happy.
