The old lady looked around the room again and then disappeared with the sound of a bursting bubble. It was quiet in the room for a while.
“Did I just have a nightmare?” Maggie asked.
“We all did,” Abby said. “I cannot believe everything that happened today.”
“It seems like the more we find out, the less we know,” Larry commented.
“That is very true,” Wilton said. “I must confess to a certain bewilderment.”
“The old lady said something about you ruling,” Abby said.
Wilton smiled. “You caught that? As it happens, I am the new Paladin. We will be making the announcement tonight.”
“Just like that?”
“No, Abby. That was a big part of why it took so long for me to return. The leadership of the Palatinate caucused and selected me. I did not thank them. My life just became very complex.”
“I guess I know what we need to do,” Larry said. “But, what about Abby?”
“In addition to being Arthur Winkleman’s personal pilot,” Wilton said, “Abby managed a lot of the day to day activities related to the Palatinate for him. I would like her to continue in that role if it is agreeable to her.”
“Mr. Wilton, thank you,” Abby said. “I would like to think about that before I answer.”
“And I would expect you to. Very well, I have transportation lined up to take you over to the hotel for the night. In between the things I must do tomorrow, and your medical tests, I would like to meet with each of you, individually.”
“And we have plans to make for the rest of our lives,” Maggie said.
Wilton laughed. “Well said, Margaret. We all have to plan for the rest of our lives.”
