Kyle gave me that sexy smile again and took a glass from the counter. “I can’t blame him. You’re gorgeous. If you were with me, I wouldn’t let you out of my sight.”
His eyes skimmed my body which made me feel a little exposed. He licked his lips which had me shifting in my seat. What the hell is wrong with me? I shouldn’t be looking at someone else, especially since I’m finally with Morgan.
“You know, you would be really great for this place.”
I tilted my head while he put the tumbler he was cleaning back in the row of glasses near the counter.
“What do you mean? Shantel said…”
“Have you seen any strippers or a pole in here? I was talking about being a waitress. I can guarantee you that you’ll get good tips by the end of each night.”
“I don’t know. I’m in school, and I don’t think I’ll have the time to do it.”
“Do you have a job right now?”
“No, but…”
“So what are you doing for money? And please don’t say he’s paying for everything.”
At this point he is, I thought as I stared at Kyle. It would be nice to have my own money instead of me relying on Morgan, but I already knew what would happen if I even consider it. He wouldn’t like it, and he would tell me to quit.
“I don’t know.”
“You need his permission to work?”
“It’s nothing like that.”
“I’ll make a deal with you. You can come work for a night to see if you like it. If you do, then I’ll hire you on the spot. What do you say?”
I sighed as he continued to stare at me. The offer was tempting, but how would I be able to do this when we’re supposed to be in hiding?
“I think you’re going to agree.”
“Am I?”
“I could tell by the look you have that you will.”
I smiled. “Fine, I’ll do one night.”
“Cool. What about Saturday?”
“I guess that’s fine.”
“I’ll ask Shantel to contact you for your size for your uniform. In fact, I’ll have her contact you for the time as well. Don’t want your boyfriend to go postal if another man calls you.”
“Morgan’s not like that.”
“I’m sure.”
Morgan came over to me and wrapped his arms around me. He glanced over at Kyle, who gave him a cocky smile.
The countdown was approaching for midnight as everyone was getting ready to ring in the New Year. Once it approached midnight, everyone was celebrating around us as Morgan pulled me off my seat and gave me a passionate kiss. He held me tight as his bottom lip pulled on mine, causing me to moan.
“Happy New Year, baby,” he whispered.
“Happy New Year,”
I glanced over and saw Kyle shaking his head as he walked over to a group near the end of the bar.
If I didn’t know any better, something else was going on with him. Whatever it was, I don’t think I want any part of it. I needed an escape from staying at that house before I went out of my mind, so I will still do the job. Hopefully, Morgan will understand and support me on this.
Morgan
After ringing in the New Year, it was time for Hayley and me to go back to the house. After telling Will bye, we headed out. When we got in the car, I glanced over at Hayley, and she was staring out of the window. I began to rub on her thigh. She looked at me and smiled.
“Is everything okay?”
She nodded and put her hand on mine. “Everything’s good.”
“So, what were you and Kyle talking about before I came to the bar?”
She gave me a wide-eyed expression. I guess she didn’t think I knew they were talking.
“We weren’t talking about anything.”
“Please, your face says that you were. Now, what was the conversation about?”
She sighed and looked at me. “He offered me a job.”
I raised my eyebrow before pulling over in the nearest parking lot. I left the car running as I gave her a curious look. “What?”
“He offered me a job.”
“I heard that part. I’m just trying to figure out why. He doesn’t know you so why all of a sudden does he offer you a job?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did you accept?”
“It’s tempting since I’m not making any money.”
“Hales, that’s not a good idea, especially working with him. I don’t trust him.”
“Morgan, I understand that you don’t want me doing anything, but I have to before I lose my damn mind. It could be months, hell years before we are able to do anything, and I can’t take it. I can’t be under you every day.”
I shook my head while she sighed. “We have to start living normal lives. People are already suspicious of us being in the guest house 24/7. We have to actually go out and live before someone finds out what happened.”
“I don’t know Hales. I feel like he has another motive for hiring you. Besides, you’re only 20 you can’t be serving drinks to people.”
“Technically, I can. I just can’t drink them. Besides, my birthday is in two weeks or have you forgotten?”
“I haven’t.”
She looked into my eyes while running her hands through my hair. She smiled as she caressed my cheek.
“So, what do you say?”
My eyes lowered to her breasts as her hand went down my chest. She was trying to seduce me, which wasn’t going to work this time. Shit, it’ll work, but I’m not telling her.
“I still think it’s a bad idea.”
“Well, Shantel is working there, so that should put your mind at ease in a way.”
“You’re really going to put Shantel into this? Earlier tonight you were pissed about me sleeping with her.”
“Which I sort of got over. Besides, she has a thing for Kyle.”
“Really.”
She glanced at me and smiled. “What’s wrong? You disappointed that she didn’t want you?”
“No, I just thought someone like Kyle wouldn’t be her type.”
“Honestly, I don’t care about Shantel or Kyle right now,” Hayley said. She pulled off her thong and hiked up her dress. She unzipped my pants and straddled me.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“What does it look like? I want you right now,” she said with a sexy smile.
I leaned back in the seat as she unbuttoned my shirt.
“Well, in that case, feel free to do whatever you want with me.”
“I was planning to.”
I loved this side of us. Whenever the mood hit us, we were both ready. That’s one thing I hope would never change between us.
***
Once we handled our business in the parking lot, we went back to the house. I pulled up in the driveway and saw Will’s car parked nearby. I don’t know how he got here before we did when we left before him. I checked my watch and saw it was almost 2 AM. I guess we had lost track of time.
“Where were you two? I been standing out here for awhile,” Will said.
“Just checking out the city,” I said.
“Can I talk to you alone, cousin?”
I glanced over at Hayley, who nodded and went inside of the house.
“What’s up?”
“I want to apologize for earlier. I wasn’t trying to get into your business, but I was concerned about your mom. As I mentioned, I know things have been different since what happened with your stepdad.”
I looked out to the sky as Will took out a cigarette and lit it. He offered me one, but I declined.
“I thought you were trying to stop.”
“Yeah, but I can’t. I will eventually. At least it’s not the other stuff.”
“What’s the difference?” I asked as I continued to look ahead.
“Please, it wasn’t that long ago that you were doing it too.”
“Yeah, but I’m trying to change.”
“Why, because of Hayley? She really doesn
t like me.”
I glanced at Will and sighed. “It’s nothing personal. She just has been through a lot.”
“I’m sure. She looks like a spoiled princess.”
“She may look like it, but she’s far from it.”
Will smirked. “Anyway, I just want the time that we have to be spent having fun and not getting into unnecessary drama. Since you been here for a month now, you might not come back for a while.”
“I will.”
“You still didn’t answer the question about why you came here.”
“Everything is fine, Will. I don’t need an excuse to visit.”
He nodded. “Okay, I guess that’s good enough for me. I’ll let you get back to Hayley. See you later, cousin.”
I nodded as he went to the main house. I’m not sure what that conversation was about, but at least some things were resolved.
I looked into the guest house and saw Hayley on the couch. It looked as if she was asleep. I walked inside and glanced at her. Her eyes were closed as she was gently snoring. I smiled and slowly lifted her into my arms. I kissed her forehead and took her to the bed. Honestly, when she mentioned her birthday, I didn’t want her to know that I did forget. With so much going on, it was hard to think about anything, but surviving each day without being caught. Now I had to think of something that would put a smile on her face. I know she misses her parents, so I will do whatever I can to make her have a special day.
I think I know what I wanted to do. Hopefully, I’ll be able to pull it off.
Lamar
A month after the incident between Morgan and me, I was back in my old room at my parents’ house while they made a big fuss over me. I wasn’t helpless, so I don’t know why everyone was around me trying to make me feel comfortable. I can pretty much do that myself now.
I looked out of the window and saw how clear the sky looked. It was a perfect day to actually go out, but for some reason I didn’t want to.
The door opened, and Tamara walked in. She gave me a small smile while handing a bag to me.
“Hey,” I said as I gave her a kiss.
“Hey. My mom wanted me to bring some vegetable soup to you. Your mom said you hadn’t eaten today so you probably should eat that.”
“Thanks, but no thanks. I don’t really want any soup,” I said.
Tamara sighed and sat down on the bed. She put her hand on my leg and stared at me.
“How are you feeling?”
I straightened myself up and gave her a sincere smile. “Everything’s good. I’m starting to regain my energy again.”
“That’s good. Your face looks better too. I hate to say this, but Morgan did a job on you.”
I smirked. “Well, half of those jabs he did on me I taught him. I didn’t think he would have been using them on me though.”
“Well, that was because you were being hard on him about Hayley. I still can’t believe you videotaped them having sex.”
“I wasn’t proud of that, but I had to find some sort of proof that they were together.”
Tamara rubbed her hands together and stared at the window.
“Did you know they were together?”
She looked at me and closed her eyes. “I caught them at the apartment.”
“It was the day you said you walked in on him and his girl. You left out a small detail. That the girl was my sister.”
“Mar…”
“No, you lied to me. You could have told me the truth.”
“So you can do some outlandish scheme to expose them. Oh, wait a minute, you did do that.”
“Tamara…”
“No! Because of you and your damn schemes, it not only cost you your sister, but your best friend as well. Why didn’t you want the two of them to be together? Hayley is a grown woman, and she can take care of herself, so I don’t see the issue with her being with Morgan.”
“You don’t understand.”
“Well, tell me what is going on so I can understand.”
I shook my head. I didn’t want to go into details about what happened with Samantha. It was something I still thought was too soon to talk about.
“I’ll tell you everything on another day. Right now, I’d rather not talk about it.”
“That’s my problem with you. You don’t know how to open up to people.”
“I said I will tell you when the time is right. Just not right now.”
Tamara shook her head. “Well, when you’re ready to tell me, then you can talk to me. I’m out,” she said while going to the door.
“Tamara, don’t leave,” I said. I slowly got up from the bed and walked over to her. My eyes were starting to hurt. Since Morgan beat my ass that night, a lot of things have changed, including my sensitivity to light.
I put my arms around her as she sighed. “There’s something I need to tell you,” she said.
I glanced at her as she looked teary-eyed.
“While you were in the hospital, I called Hales. Actually, your mom wanted me to check on her. I warned her about what you were going to do to Morgan, so I told her they needed to leave town. She thought I was trying to get information from her to give to you, but I was really trying to help them.”
I gave a wide-eyed expression while removing my arms from around her. “You did what? And you are just now telling me this?”
“I only did it because you were thinking irrationally.”
“Well hell, I guess I was since Morgan put me in the damn hospital! He nearly killed me.”
“I get that, but you have to realize what you done Lamar. You’re just as guilty for what happened as Morgan is. You started this by keeping Hayley off limits and then you went psycho with the stuff you were doing. Eventually someone was going to go off, and someone did; Morgan.”
“I still can’t believe you did that.”
“And I would do it again if I had to.”
I laughed as I walked over to the bed. “I’m sure you feel pretty proud of yourself.”
“It’s not about being proud, it’s about doing the right thing. You have been more of an ex to Hayley than her brother. She wanted to be with someone, and it nearly killed you. Why couldn’t you just be happy for her?”
“Because I didn’t want what happened to my cousin to happen to her! I didn’t want her to be so naïve, and she learned the hard way about trusting someone. I didn’t want her life to be over because of her making mistakes and choosing the wrong person to be in her life.”
“Mar, what is going on? Tell me why you feel that way? And what happened to your cousin to make you act this way?”
I closed my eyes, wishing I didn’t say anything.
“Can we please get off of this subject?”
“Lamar.”
“I don’t want to talk about it, Tamara.”
She sighed and nodded. “Fine. Just know that whenever you are ready to talk, I’ll be here.”
“Thank you.”
There was a knock at the door, and my mom came in. She smiled at Tamara before staring at me.
“I got a call today from a Dallas number. It was Morgan.”
Tamara looked shocked while I slowly rose up. “What? He actually called you? And why is he in Dallas?”
After I said that, I realized he had family there. His uncle Rick.
“He wanted us to come out there for Hayley’s birthday. He wanted to give a surprise party for her and figured we could see her.”
“Why they can’t come here? I’m not pressing charges anymore, so they’re good to come back.”
“I don’t know Lamar, but he asked for everyone to come, especially you.”
I looked at my mom as if she had lost her mind. Why would he want to look at me after everything that has happened?
“For real?”
“Really.”
I glanced at Tamara, who gave me a smile. “I think this is a start.”
I glanced at the window wondering if I wanted to accept his offer. Too much has happened between us, and h
onestly, I don’t know if I could be in the same room with him, but maybe I should if I wanted to repair my relationship with Hayley.
“When does he want us to come?
Hayley
A day later, I was staring at my uniform. At least it’s classy. The beige colored dress would look good against my skin as I held it up in the mirror. I stared at Morgan as he walked into the guest house.
“You sure you want to do this? I don’t have a problem taking care of you.”
I turned around and looked into his blue eyes. “As much as I don’t mind that you do, I need to do this. I’m bored babe.”
He smiled. “At first I hated it, but now, I understand. I do have one condition, though.”
“What’s that?”
“I’ll be with you.”
I gave him an unsure expression while I sat down on the bed. “What?”
“You didn’t think I was going to let you go out on your own, did you? Someone is after me, so that means you’re fair game now.”
“No. You already don’t like Kyle, so I don’t think it’s a good idea.”
“Why? You don’t want me to see him flirting with you.”
“You know that’s not it. I just don’t think it’s a good idea.”
He put his arms around me and held me against him. I sighed as he rubbed my hair.
“I’ll be okay, baby. You know I can hold my own.”
“I know, but…”
“But nothing, you don’t have to worry about me.”
“Okay. Well, I’ll let you get ready then.”
He kissed my cheek as he went out the door.
I took a deep breath and looked at the dress again. I assured Morgan that everything would be fine. I just hope everything was on my first day.
***
After showering and getting dressed, I was ready to go. As Morgan pulled up to the club, he gave me a kiss before I got out of the car. I knew he didn’t want me to go in, but I was ready to start my evening.
I slowly walked in and saw Shantel at the bar setting up. She looked over and waved.
“Hey. Is Kyle here?” I asked while I put my bag behind the counter.
“He’s in the back getting more liquor. So, are you nervous?”
“Why would I be?” I asked while straightening my dress.
