Zan watched the four gorgim stride away, leaving Bone Boy’s corpse right there in the woods two dozen feet from Widdle’s corpse.

He had been shadowing them ever since their encounter with Gaspard and Merizen, whom he had followed into Umperskap from the Briarwood Bridge. When the two humans had fled as the gorgim set off in pursuit of Ludwig van Beethoven, Zan had decided to follow the gorgim instead in order to gauge their reaction to all of this. That was important. The last thing Glí needed was another war with Umperskap.

As he hurried north to the rendezvous point with Chief Constable Avery and Captain Strang, he thanked the stars that war didn’t seem likely. Even so, the involvement of the four gorgim complicated things considerably. He had a feeling Avery was going to explode when she learned of it. Captain Strang, well, he wouldn’t explode. He might cock an eyebrow or something, which in his case amounted to the same thing.

  Zan sighed.

He suddenly had a feeling all of this was going to end very, very badly.
