“Five, four, three, two, one…happy New Year!”

The Times Square crowd shouted and cheered as “Auld Lang Syne” began to play. I’d always loved that song, but tonight it made me a little forlorn.

Violet snored loudly, and I laughed, shaking off my melancholy. Looking around the room at my sleeping loved ones, I felt an intense surge of gratitude to have them here with me. As much as Lukas had hurt me, I wouldn’t change a thing that had led to my parents coming home. I’d do it all again for them in a heartbeat.

A flash outside caught my eye, and I walked over to the window to watch the sky light up with fireworks, a few miles away. My chest felt lighter with the promise of a brand-new year. It was a time to make a fresh start, and I was going to do exactly that.

I smiled at my reflection in the window and sucked in a breath when I saw the outline of a tall woman with long, silvery hair standing behind me. Heart pounding, I whirled around, only to find no one there. I ran to the door of the room and looked both ways, but the hallway was empty except for two nurses at the nurses’ station.

Great, I’m losing my mind. I smiled sheepishly as I returned to the room. It was more likely that I was running on too little sleep.

Turning off the television, I lay down on the last free bed and closed my eyes. I thought about Faris and sent up another quick prayer to his goddess that he recovered from the horrible things that had been done to him. Regardless of my feelings toward his friends, I wished the faerie nothing but the best.

I was somewhere between REM and deep sleep when my body felt like it was cocooned in warmth, and a sense of peace settled over me. I sighed as a gentle female voice filled every crevice of my mind.

“I think you will do nicely, Jesse James.”
