The sound of arguing permeated through my front door. Swiping at my tears, I headed to the door as I recognized the voices.
“I said go away,” Sam growled as I stepped out onto the porch. He stood toe to toe with Ryan in my front yard. Both men looked ready for a fight.
“No. I want to check on my alpha,” Ryan retorted.
“She’s fine.”
“You can’t feel her heartache through the alpha bond. She is not fine,” my beta said through clenched teeth.
“Why don’t you let me worry about my mate?”
“Oh, now she’s your mate? Convenient. You were fine with leaving her yesterday.”
Sam recoiled as if the words were a physical blow. Rage filled his face as he stepped toward Ryan.
I reacted on instinct, my hands shooting out as I shouted. “Stop!”
They did. In fact, everyone did. It was as if time froze. Everyone milling outside stopped moving as my magic wrapped around them. I could feel the reach of the power extending farther and farther but I couldn’t stop it. The power had a mind of its own.
Adira’s presence in my mind grew smaller as the radius of my spell grew larger.
Stop. Please stop. I chanted repeatedly in my mind to no avail.
“Liliana,” I heard Daniel shout. His magic reached out to combat mine. I prayed that he overpowered me. I could feel my consciousness slipping. As my power grew, my control slipped. I slipped, faded away, just like my wolf.
I was trapped in my own mind as I heard my voice speak words that were not my own. “Your time is done, Chancellor. It’s time for a true witch to reign. Bow to your master--all of you.”
I saw my hands raise above my head, watched the loose sleeve of my shirt slip down around my elbows, as more magic oozed out of me. When my head was lowered, I saw the rest of the wolves exiting their homes. Both packs in their entirety bowed, even Sam and Ryan.
The only one strong enough to resist was Daniel. I mentally begged for him to understand, for all of them to understand. This wasn’t me. I wasn’t doing this. It was someone else… something else… taking control of my body and my magic.
“I said BOW!” My voice boomed. Still Daniel remained standing as he fought to overpower me… it… me? I wasn’t sure anymore.
“Fine. Then die,” I heard myself laugh.
“NO!” Tessa’s voice rang out as a midnight blue ball formed in my hands.
The magic dissipated at her interruption as my hand reached out. Tessa’s body rose high into the air, her feet dangling uselessly as she struggled to breath. I smiled as her eyes started to bulge.
NO, I shouted in my mind as I fought the foreign entity that controlled my body.
I fought to release my best friend from the spell. To release any one who could stop the events that were unfolding.
Daniel shot a spell at my chest, sending me flying backwards. I heard Tessa thump to the ground.
“Liliana, kick her out. Take control. You can do this. It’s your body. Your magic,” Daniel shouted.
I tried. I really did try. But, ultimately? I failed.
I felt myself sit up, a wicked smile painting my face. “Didn’t I tell you to die?”
A ball of energy left my hand at the same time the words were spoken.
And that? That was how I murdered my best friend’s father and started a war between the wolves and witches.
