The notion of wrestling with one's future bride appears in other cultures, too. Stith Thompson's Motif H331.6.1 Suitor contest: wrestling with bride gives Wasco (Native American) and German sources. An Icelandic tale seems related, Motif Q451.0.3 Strong girl breaks impudent suitor's right hand and left foot. Aarne and Thompson's Types of the Folktale cites Type 519 The Strong Woman as Bride (Brunhilde). Variants are listed from Czechoslovakia, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, and Sweden. In this tale, however, the suitor must send a helper to subdue the bride. The ruse is discovered and both the suitor and helper rejected.
