The two of us shared a laugh before I took another bite of my food.

In the back of my mind, I knew she was right. I’d had this trip on the calendar for over a month now, and I’d been carrying around this tiny little fucking box for just a on the calendar for over a month, and the box I kept with me at all times I’d had for just as long. I planned our trip for the explicit purpose of making this point in our relationship the most magical it could possibly be. But, as I gazed into Charity’s eyes, the air between us shifted. A comfortable silence fell over us, and the box that pressed into my thigh seemed to talk at me. Whisper its truth in the back of my mind.

It doesn't have to be perfect. It just has to be.

I stood up from my chair and slipped my hand into my pocket. I pulled the little black box out and twirled it in my fingers as Charity’s brows stitched together tightly.

  “What’s that?” she asked.

And when I popped the box open to reveal the ring, I watched shock roll over her face.

  “Rocco?” she asked.

I slipped down onto one knee, my eyes holding hers.

“Rocco, what are you doing?” she asked.

  “You’re right, Charity,” I said.

I heard the lounge door open behind us, but I didn’t turn to see who was behind us. Let them see. Let everyone see. Because I loved this woman, and I was ready to ask her the one question that had been burning in my mind for weeks.

  “About what?” she whispered.

“I’m terrible at surprises,” I said.

She let out a breathless chuckle as her hands fell into her lap.

“And I guess, in a way, I was looking for you call me out on it. Because I’ve been carrying this damn ring around for over a month. I bought it the day after I planned our trip. The day before I asked you to take the time off. But I can’t hold off any longer. I just can’t,” I said.

  “Oh, Rocco,” Charity whispered.

“You, Charity Jones, are persistent. You’re stubborn. You’re dominant. You are, by far, the strongest person I have ever come across. You take my shit without putting up with my bullshit, and you call me out when I am being a hypocrite. You’re right, Charity. I am fucking terrible at surprises. And I am even worse with romance.”

  “You’re really not,” she whispered.

“But, what I can tell you is this. I love you. I’ve loved you since the first moment your voice graced my ears. I’ve loved you from the moment you first cooked me a meal in your home. I’ve loved you ever since the moment I was scared I’d lose you. I don’t ever want to lose you, Charity. So, instead of this weekend being our engagement weekend, why don’t we make it our celebratory weekend?”

Her eyes connected with mine and I watched them fill with tears.

“All you have to do is say ‘yes’. Marry me, Charity Jones. Be my wife,” I said.

All time seemed to stop. The world stopped turning. The sun stopped boiling. The clocks stopped ticking. But, the second Charity rose up from her chair, I knew what was coming. She threw herself at me. Wrapped her arms around me. I stood up and wrapped her up in my embrace, listening as she laughed into the crook of my neck.

“Yes, Rocco! Holy hell, yes. I’ll marry you. I’ll marry you. I love you so much.”

Resounding cheers came from behind us as I cupped the back of Charity’s neck. I pulled my head back and gazed down into her eyes, then slowly pressed my lips against hers. I heard Graham whooping and hollering. I heard Reese exclaiming above everyone that she better be able to help us plan the wedding. I heard more of the hospital staff gather into the room, clapping and cheering and whistling.

I gripped Charity’s hair and pulled her back as my cheeks began to ache with my smile.

“Want to try it on?” I asked.

“Oh my gosh, the ring,” she said.

I smiled at her as she stepped back, then took the box from my hands. I watched her slip it on, admiring it in the light of the lounge. Reese came over and ogled at it. She cupped Charity’s hand and made her wiggle her finger to watch the canary diamond sparkle.

The kind of yellow that reminded me of the specks in her eyes.

“Maybe now you can keep your make-out sessions out of the hospital,” Graham said.

Dr. Goldstein clapped his hand down onto my back as I turned to him and smiled.

“Thanks for giving her the time off,” I said.

“Welcome to the family, Rocco. Treat her right, and you’re good. Treat her wrong, and you’re standing in a building full of people who know how to precisely slice your body up and dispose of you while keeping sterile,” he said.

  “Graham!” Charity exclaimed.

  “He’s not wrong,” Reese murmured.

“She’ll want for nothing, I promise you that,” I said.

And it was a promise I knew I’d always be able to keep.
