For the second time since I’d known her, Lauren was speechless. Her eyes were doing something crazy as she seemed to be absorbing and taking it all in. All I could do was laugh at her reaction and the way things worked out.

  Chapter Twenty-One

  TANNER

Carter was going to kill me. Dead. No lie. But I couldn’t not go through with it. I’d received the call from Marcy over the weekend, and fuck me, I had no idea how I’d kept tight-lipped for the past thirty-six hours or so. But the painful, slow death I expected to receive would be worth it.

I’d spent the morning painting the sitting area’s walls, and then started making some calls about subletting my place. After that, Rex and I had walked into town and purchased Carter’s surprise. It then took an hour to set everything up.

I looked around the room, my eyes landing on the multiple surprises I’d placed on a variety of surfaces.

  Dead. I was so dead.

I laughed as I exited the room, energy pulsing through me, eager for him to be home. He’d messaged me earlier saying Lauren was going to drop him off, which meant I was waiting impatiently for his arrival.

With a quick glance at the clock, I ventured into the kitchen and pulled out a beer. I needed to occupy myself before I came out of my skin. By the time I took my last mouthful, I heard the door open and Rex bark, announcing the man I loved was home.

There was no hiding my eager grin as he stepped into the room.

Immediately, Carter glanced around, his eyes shifting carefully over the room, no doubt trying to pinpoint the reason for my eagerness. “Do I really want to know?”

I nodded while he was halfway through speaking. “You really do.”

His mouth twisted into a grin, but I also saw the nerves flickering in his eyes. Yep, so dead.

“You had a good day?” I asked. My attempt at being casual didn’t work.

With a shake of his head, Carter sighed and wiped a palm over his face. “Just get on with it.”

My cheeks hurt from grinning so much. I had no doubt from his reaction he knew his surprise wasn’t something romantic like a candlelit dinner, or cutesy like… whatever the heck couples gave each other that was cute.

Taking a step toward him, I stretched out my hand for him to take. He did so without hesitation, which surprised me. I expected him to put up more of a fight. I pulled him into my arms and planted a kiss on his warm lips. I sighed happily on contact, but there was no way I would take it further, not with his kickass surprise waiting.

“Should I be nervous, because I am?” He looked skeptically at me.

Taking his hand, I led him out of the kitchen and to the staircase. As we climbed the stairs, I could barely contain myself. “I love you. And I think it’s important to accept every part of each other, warts, kinks, and all.” I felt him hesitate, so I pushed on, virtually tugging him up the remaining steps. When we reached our bedroom door, I paused to allow the word “kink” to settle in. I also paused to work out the best move. I knew I may need a quick escape, but I also desperately wanted to see his reaction.

“Just open the stupid door already.”

Not wanting to push him too far, I moved to the side so I could open the door, with him entering next to me.

  “You ready?”

  “Do I have a choice?”

I grinned. “Kinks and all,” I murmured next to his ear as I pushed the door open wide, put my hand on his lower back, and forced him to take a couple of steps in.

Flickering candlelight greeted us. I nodded in appreciation at the mood lighting. My gaze then followed his, but while he stood frozen in abject horror, mine landed on the first display with glee. Two Ken dolls were strategically placed on the end of the bed, both butt naked, and in the 69 position.

Then I caught Carter’s head flicking to another display; this one I was mighty proud of. Three Kens were going at it in a sort of triangle, one impressively taking it up the ass while he was giving head to the other cockless Ken. It had taken at least ten minutes to get those bastards to behave. Thank Christ for superglue.

“Ta-da!” I considered doing jazz hands but didn’t want to overdo it. “You know”—I stepped up behind Carter and wrapped my arms around him, deliberately locking his arms to his sides in case he decided to strike out—“I think I can totally get why you’d use Ken dolls as porn.” He tried to spin around in my arms and made a disgruntled sound that may have been threatening my own fine specimen. “Ken is kinda hot when he’s getting his kink on.”

I laughed loudly when he managed to wriggle free, his face to me, his eyes wide. “You— I can’t fuck—” He shook his head, struggling for words. Letting out a huge sigh, he rolled his eyes. “When did you speak to my mom?” I could see him fighting laughter.

“This weekend,” I admitted. Figuring I’d lived so far, I risked tugging him toward me.

  “You know, I didn’t—”

“Shh. Do not finish that sentence. Ken porn.” I shrugged with a big grin fixed firmly on my face. “Hot, baby.”

He rolled his eyes again and reached up to twist my nipple.

“Ouch,” I said with a laugh.

Carter finally smiled, his eyes twinkling with mischief. “Ken is hot. How do you feel about going blond?”

With a loud laugh, I manhandled him toward the bed, the 69ing Kens going flying when we hit the mattress. “For you, baby, I’d consider it.”

  “Really?” he asked.

“No fucking way.” He pinched me again. “Ow.”

  “You deserved that.”

I nodded in agreement. “No doubt. I may not go blond for you, but I promise I’ll keep life interesting so you’ll never tire of me or go looking for Ken porn without me.” I rubbed my nose against his, hoping he understood the sincerity behind some of the weirdest words I’d ever spoken.

His warm hand brushed my cheek before he tugged me down for a gentle kiss. With just a few inches between us, his focus was intent. “I’ll hold you to it.” He pressed another kiss to my waiting mouth. “Ken porn only when we’re together.”

His laughter quickly died when I gently probed his mouth with my tongue, drinking him in. One, two, a million kisses would never be enough with Carter. And I had no doubt he fully believed I was the Duracell fucking bunny when it came to loving him.

  Chapter 1 Excerpt

  DAVIS

I closed the door gently behind me, hoping like hell it wouldn’t make a loud noise and wake Libby. She was cutting two teeth, which made us both miserable. We’d continue to ride it out together, though. Her with lots of gum-numbing ointment and me with brain-numbing beer when she was sleeping peacefully.

A whoosh of breath hissed out of me when the door closed quietly. Baby monitor in hand, I turned and headed toward downstairs where the party was happening. Tanner, my best friend, and his boyfriend, Carter, were having a housewarming of sorts. I glanced around the space when I hit the foyer. Tanner had done a good job. Not that I was surprised; he was a talented bastard, so it was kinda kickass to see his craftsmanship hadn’t gone to waste here in the hicksville town of Kirkby that we’d only called home for about a year or so.

“She go down okay?” Tanner asked, handing me a bottle of beer as I made my way into the kitchen.

I nodded and took the beer gratefully. “Thanks. Yeah, no problem at all.” I took a swig and placed the baby monitor on the charger on the large sideboard.

During the final stages of refurbs, Carter, whose home it was prior to Tanner and he getting together and Tanner moving in, had set up one of the spare rooms as Libby’s room. I’d been blown away by the gesture when Tanner had told me. While Tanner and I had known each other forever, he hadn’t been with Carter for all that long. So for Carter to create a space for my baby girl in his home told me with absolute certainty, Tanner had got a good one.

What it also meant was Tanner and Carter supported me and my single-parenting gig even more by having Libby overnight on occasion. They’d had her a couple of nights already, my first nights without my daughter since she was born.

And what had I done on both nights? The first in almost a year with zero responsibility? Partied? Picked up? Neither. I’d had a few drinks without having to wait for Libby to fall asleep first, watched Netflix, and stared at Libby’s empty room a few times.

“What are your plans tomorrow?” Tanner stood next to me, both of us glancing around the room filled with a few faces I recognized from my coffee shop, while some were clearly out-of-towners, no doubt Carter’s friends, since I was pretty much all Tanner had beyond a few other tradesmen in the area he’d got to know. There were also some of Carter’s work colleagues, a bunch of vets, nurses, and such.

I shrugged. “Not much. Katie and Phil are working the morning shift, and Sandy and Craig are taking over so I have the day off.” I took a pull of my beer before continuing. “If it stays sunny, I’ll probably take Libby to the park and duck pond.” I glanced at Carter heading our way, a bright smile on his face and his gaze intent on Tanner. “How about you?”

Tanner’s shrug brushed against my arm lightly. “Tidy up, I suppose.”

I snorted just as Carter reached us. Tanner’s arm immediately went around his waist.

I glanced at Tanner and realized he was looking at me. “What?”

  “What’s the snort for?”

With a roll of my eyes, I took a large mouthful of beer. After swallowing the cool liquid, I said, “Just wondering when the fuck we got old and Sundays were filled with domestic shit.”

“Who are you calling old, fucker?”

Carter laughed. “Well, the two of you are reaching your prime. Ouch.” Carter reached behind himself and rubbed his ass.

I chuckled. “See, your younger studmuffin knows it.”

Tanner shook his head. “Studmuffin? For real? Who even uses that term anymore? Hell, did anyone ever?” He glanced over at said studmuffin, and his gaze softened before he turned back to me. “And I think you’ll find it’s you who’s become the king of domestic duties since having that angel of yours. But hey, you know, if you want to go partying and spend the next day nursing a hangover, we can definitely have Libby for you.”

Damn, he was right. That made me feel ancient, and I was so far from it that that shit wasn’t funny.
