Forever Came Calling

Cody

“Miss Rogers?” I look up from the floor, gray specs scattered around white tiles, to the doctor who I’ve been waiting on. My mind is racing.

Where’s my mom? Why is this kid coming to me? Where’s the real doctor? Where’s my mommy?

I want to scream. I want to yell and fight and kick my way out of here because I know the minuet that I look up what he’s going to say.

You know that face people make when they are about to tell you horrible news? They have pitty and sadness in their eyes with no smile, hands in pockets, and a slight shake about them. I’ve been in this position before, the girl with the dead family member.

“Yes?” I start to stand but he holds his hand out for me to stop. “How’s my mom?” I ask.

He sighs and takes a seat next to me. “Your mom had a heart attack. We did everything we could to keep her alive but unfortunately we’ve failed.”

The tears are falling before I even realize it. “What do you mean you failed? You are a doctor aren’t you? You are supposed to save people!” I yell.

“I’m so sorry Miss Rogers.” He reaches out to touch me but I jump out of my chair before he can.

“Don’t touch me.” I hold my hand up. He stands up and starts to speak again “You can’t be serious. She can’t be gone. She’s all I had left.”

“Can I call someone for you?” He asks but I shake my head. “I hate to do this but time is precious sometimes.” He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a form. “Your mother was a donor but we just need conformation from you.”

“Are you fucking kidding me!” I scream. “Go away! Leave me alone!” He doesn’t know what to say or do. “Why are you still standing here!” He scurries away quickly when he see’s the anger in my eyes.

  I fall to my knees.

For so long it was just my mom and I here in this little town outside of a bigger city. Miller Falls was never a place I thought I’d stay but after so much suffering and so many memories made here I couldn’t find myself to leave. Now there is just more pain. More suffering.

“Miss?” I look up and my heart stops. “Are you okay?” Grayson asks.

I know who Grayson is but I doubt he knows who I am. My dad was a cop. My brother was a cop. My whole life I’ve been surrounded by cops and Grayson is a cop. I haven’t had much contact with him over the years, passing here or there. I’ve always admired him from afar though.

I look away as I wipe my eyes. “Cody?” He questions and I instantly look up at him.

“You know my name?” I ask.

“Of course. I was friend’s with your brother.” He steps closer and kneels down in front of me. “Are you okay?” He asks.

“Yeah.” I wipe my eyes and try to put a smile on for this ridiculously hot guy.

“What happened?” He moves his hand up to my cheek and wipes just under my eyes. “You’re mom?”

  “She passed away.” I whisper.

He doesn’t say anything, his arms wrap around me and he halls me against him until I’m practically in his lap. He holds me as I cry. Sooths me when I whimper. “I’m sorry Cody.”

I sniff and pull myself away from him. “Thank you. I’m sorry.” I wipe at his nice shirt. “Umm.. I have to go.” I get to my feet. “I leave in the morning.” I look around in a panic.

  “Leave?” He asks.

“I have to report for duty.” He looks at me confused. “I’m a medic with the military.” He still looks confused.

“Wouldn’t they give you some leave to take care of everything here?” Grayson asks.

“Maddie will do it. She’s already on her way here. I need to go…” I trail off. I find myself walking away from him and he doesn’t say anything until I get to the doors that lead to the elevators.

  “Can I write you Cody?”

I slowly turn around and smile a little at him. “I’d like that.” I tell him. “Bye Grayson.”

  “Stay safe.”

I’ve lost so much in my life. Way more then any one person ever should but if I have learned one thing from my past it’s that I have to keep going or the weight of the loss will crush me.
