“I want us to try to take things to the next level, but you gotta promise to be patient with me.” Her head lowered as she pouted. “This relationship shit is new to me and I’ll probably fuck it up.

With a smile, Jax lifted her head by her chin. “Follow my lead, and I won’t let you. But if you do… we can fix it together.”

Two weeks had passed since things between Christian and Nash became official. He’d been patient and gentle with her, giving her the space and closeness she needed when she needed them most. A part of her thought things would be awkward as they transitioned from friends to lovers but their friendship was just as strong. Really, the only difference at this point was their date nights and freaky rendezvous, but they hadn’t gone all the way yet.

She’d been spending less time at work, too. Not necessarily because she was spending all of her time with Nash but because she was happier. More at peace. More fulfilled. Christian didn’t realize how much she was trying to fill her mind and her time while she was with Tyrell until she removed him from her life.

To Christian’s surprise, Tyrell hadn’t been harassing her for a second chance. He called or texted her for the first week but that stopped when she told him things with Nash had gone to the next level. He swore there had always been something between them, no matter how much she tried to convince him that they were only friends during the length of her relationship with Tyrell. Somehow, the tables had turned, and now he was mad at her.

Quite frankly, Christian didn’t care enough to try and ease his mind. If he wanted to think she was fucking off with Nash… so be it. His feelings were no longer her concern. She was, however, still missing Trent. She’d been brushing off seeing him because she wanted to avoid Tyrell and talking to Trent about Tyrell. When she texted him good morning, he asked her again when she would come and see him, and Christian told Trent to call her when he got out of school.

Checking the time on her phone, Christian smiled at the picture of her and Nash on her wallpaper. Instead of calling him like she wanted to, she sent him a text that let him know she was thinking about him and hoped he was having a good day. Since Lisa and Pierre had a handle on the customers that were ordering, Christian made her way downstairs to check in on Audré. She was in the process of filling the order for a huge wedding that had came in a while ago. Christian had already done her five hundred mini cookies, now Audré had to finish hers.

A smile lifted Christian’s lips the moment she made it downstairs and the sound of Audré’s music filled her ears. She was a twenty-one-year-old Instagram model and aspiring rapper. Even though she made a decent amount of money working for Christian, the bulk of her money came from being a brand ambassador, hosting parties, making appearances, and doing shows.

Audré was a handful. Not only was she a hot-head with a quick temper but she was spoiled and used to getting babied by all of her brothers. Because of that, there wasn’t a damn thing she felt like she couldn’t get from a man. She was almost always trying to get her way. But as tough as she portrayed to be, she was one of the biggest babies out of all of them. Audré was super emotional… and dingy as hell.

“You good down here?” Christian asked, counting the stacks of cookies quickly in her head.

“Yea. Think I got a hundred more.”

  “Cool. This some new shit?”

Audré nodded as Christian bobbed her head. “Yea. You like it?”

  “Hell yea. That shit bangs.”

“Thank you. I tried to get Drecco to hop on it last night but he took forever to get to the studio. I’m sicka him and Courtney.”

Christian chuckled as she washed her hands. She sat down and began to bag the cookies that had cooled down. “Don’t tell me they’re back together now. Last I heard he’d slapped the shit out of her after she fucked up his shoes or something.”

“Girl yes. She was all on Instagram posting videos of them tongue kissing and shit before he snatched the phone and told her to stop recording him.”

“This nigga.” She chuckled and shook her head. “That girl gon’ end up catching a case over him or making him have one.”

“Listen. I be trying to tell him but he don’t listen. You know he like them crazy bitches.”

Christian nodded in agreement, looking down at her phone as she received a call from upstairs. After taking off her gloves, she put the call on speaker.

  “Y’all good?”

“Yeah, but there’s a group of men here who want to see you.”

  “Cool, thanks.”

Christian disconnected the call and pulled up the camera on her security app. As soon as she saw Money and his men in her bakery, she shot up from her seat so quickly it fell backwards. Without asking any questions, Audré dropped the cookie she was bagging and followed behind as Christian grumbled under her breath.

Hair blowing in the wind, Christian’s stride bounced as she charged up the stairs. Her heart began to beat rapidly as her body heated. Inhaling a deep breath through her flaring nostrils, she willed herself to calm down. Christian didn’t want to do anything while she was caught up in the heat of her emotions that she would regret once she calmed down.

Bursting through the door, Christian looked all around the bakery before her eyes settled on Money. Her entire staff was up front, and they had about ten customers inside. Not wanting to cause a scene, she slowly ran her hand over her mouth and said a silent prayer as she made her way in front of Money.

“The fuck are you doing here,” she gritted with a low voice.

His eyes went from Christian to Audré, who was posted on her right side with her arms crossed over her chest. Money smiled and shook his head softly. “I just wanted to come and check out my latest investment. Looks like business is doing good. I’m more interested in how the numbers are for your edibles though.”

Running her hands down her hair, Christian smiled and stepped closer to Money. “You aren’t investing in shit that I have anything to do with. Leave my bakery, and if you show up here again, I’m going to put a bullet between your eyes my damn self.”

“Your time is running up, Christian. I told you sister, you have one month to get on some act right before I air all this shit out. Understand me?”

“Nigga, you ain’t airing shit out around here,” Audré countered, pulling Christian behind her.

That was one thing the Gucci siblings would stand on – nobody ever had to fight their own battles. Even though they could, they never really had to. If the roles would have been reversed, Christian would have been ready to go to war for Audré.

“Let it ride,” Christian ordered. “Not in my place of business.”

“Not period,” Money replied. “You think you a match for me, Christian? You better hope your sister does what the fuck she’s supposed to, or I’ll show you why I’m nothing to fuck with.”

“I don’t give a fuck who you think you are, you got one more time to threaten my sister before I slice your fucking throat.”

Money chuckled before looking Audré over and leaving. Christian headed back downstairs to grab her phone to call Leigh. She knew about the price Money had placed on Ransom’s head and how she was supposed to convince him to retire, but that didn’t seem to be how things were playing out. Before Christian could call Leigh, she was receiving a call from Trent.

Releasing a loaded sigh, she answered quickly with, “Hey, Trent.”

“Hey. I’m out of school. You coming through?”

Rolling her eyes, Christian looked back at Audré. She didn’t really want to, but maybe this was the distraction she needed – just as long as Tyrell wasn’t around.

  “Your brother there yet?”

“Nah. He probably won’t be here until later tonight to pick me up for the weekend.”

“Okay. Tell your grandma I’m on the way.”

After disconnecting the call, Christian filled Audré in quickly on what was going on, disagreeing with her when she said she needed to tell Pressure, Drecco, and Donovan.
<
br />   “I don’t need them. Not for this.”

“Yes the hell you do. Especially Pressure.”

“I’m good, Dré. Nash and Ransom will help me handle this.”

With a roll of her eyes, Audré followed Christian back upstairs. “Listen, I get that they hurt your pride and your feelings when they told you you couldn’t be in the business, but this is exactly why they said that. They didn’t want you getting into some shit you can’t handle. Nash and Ransom are cool, but I don’t trust nobody with you the way I trust our brothers with you. Tell them.”

Christian pulled Audré into her side for a hug. “If you need some help with the last of the cookies call me. I’ll meet you here in the morning to help get them boxed up and ready for the bride to be’s maid of honor to pick up.”

  “Fine, stubborn.”

Smiling, Christian released Audré from her arm and placed a kiss on her cheek. “Bye, baby. One love.”

  “One love.”

On the way to see Trent, Christian called Ransom to see what his next move was going to be. She stressed to him that Money needed to be handled – now. It was one thing for him to be a threat and unseen, but it was something completely different when he started popping up at her place of business.

“I understand your anger, and you’re entitled to that, but we gotta be smart, Gucci,” Ransom stressed, causing Christian to pout and roll her eyes. “Money is untouchable ninety-nine percent of the time. I’ve already tried to get at him unsuccessfully. If we get him in public, it will have to be a snipe. If we get him in private, it will have to be a set up.”

Tightening her grip on the steering wheel, Christian thought about their next move. “So what do you suggest we do, Ransom? I don’t like him popping up at my place of business.”

“We got about two weeks left before he expects me to retire. We’re going to take that time to watch him as closely as we can, get to someone in his camp, and find out who he has partnerships with before we strike. If he’s working with someone, us taking care of him won’t do us any good because they will pick up his beef. Once we know who, if anyone, that he’s connected to, we will make a move then.”

“Aight,” Christian agreed. She sighed and shook her head as anxiousness began to consistently fill her. The last thing she wanted to do was wait two weeks, but that was the wise thing to do.

“Calm your ass down and trust that we got this, aight?”

Smirking with one side of her mouth, Christian nodded as if Ransom could see her. “Aight, but if he shows up again…”

  “We’ll handle that.”

Their conversation shifted, and Christian talked to Ransom until she arrived at her destination. Her mood went from bad to worse when she saw Tyrell standing outside talking to Trent. At first, she thought Tyrell had set her up, but when he went into the house as Trent walked over to her car she thought otherwise.

“My fault, Chris,” was Trent’s greeting after she opened her door and stepped outside. “I didn’t know he took the day off and planned to come and get me early so we could go to the Grizzlies game.”

“It’s cool. At least I got to see you for a little while.”

Trent smiled and leaned against the car next to her. “You know… you could come to the game with us. Tyrell has a third ticket.”

Christian shook her head adamantly and crossed her arms over her chest. She hadn’t physically seen Tyrell since the night they broke up. Though she hated to admit it, it was nice seeing him after a few weeks. Not nice enough to look for too long or smile his way… but nice.

Nice to know that he was still alive… and fine.

But neither of those things mattered now because she had Nash.

“I’m good. What time the game start? Seven?” Trent nodded. She looked at the time on her phone and noticed that they had about four hours. “Well, we can grab something to eat if you want.”

“Yea that’s cool. It’s on me.”

Christian’s face twisted up before she chuckled and turned slightly to face him. “What you mean it’s on you?”

  “I got some money.”

“From what? You got a job I don’t know about?”

His head tilted and eyes rolled. “Nah, but on the weekends, Tyrell been showing me how to cut grass and stuff for the spring and summer.” He shrugged and looked towards the house as Tyrell locked the door, signaling that Tonya wasn’t there. “I’ve been doing it for like three weekends now and I’ve made some good money. So it’s on me.”

“I’m proud of you,” she confessed with a smile and pinch of his chin.

“Thank you. Can Tyrell come with us too?”

  “I don’t think that’s a good idea, Trent.”

“Why not? Y’all not cool no more?”

Releasing a sigh, Christian looked in Tyrell’s direction, and he was already looking at her. Looking away quickly, Tyrell scratched the back of his head and leaned against his car.

“We just… need some space from each other.”

The sad expression that covered Trent’s face made Christian’s heart ache. For whatever reason, she felt like she was explaining why she was divorcing him to their child. But they weren’t married. And Trent wasn’t her son – even though he was Tyrell’s. And they weren’t sharing custody… though that’s what it felt like was necessary to stay in Trent’s life.

Unable to take his pout any longer, Christian agreed with, “You can ask him if he wants to come, but I’m sure he will… say… no.” Christian chuckled at the sight of Trent running towards Tyrell. He hadn’t even let her get it out good before he was pushing himself off the car.

Slowly, Tyrell made his way over to Christian after hearing what Trent had to say. His hands were stuffed in his pockets as he nibbled on his cheek. Looking away, Christian inhaled a deep breath and crossed her arms over her chest. But that didn’t last long. By the time he’d made it to her, she’d unfolded them, cupped her hands, pulled her hair gently, and tugged on her ear.

“Hey,” he spoke before licking his lips and eyeing every inch of her frame.

  “Hey.”

“If you don’t want me to come, I can make up an excuse.”

Christian looked away from him briefly and let her eyes travel over to Trent. He was looking at them smiling. Hopeful.

“It’s fine. Just… I’m not talking about us and I’m not talking about me and Nash.”

  “Cool.”

Tyrell went back to his car and both he and Trent got inside. Christian got in hers. She had no idea what the hell she’d gotten herself into. She allowed Tyrell to get in front of her, since she didn’t know where Trent wanted to eat. As she followed behind him, she called Nash just to be safe.

“Gucci,” he answered, getting an immediate smile out of her.

  “Nash. What you doing?”

“Tryin’ to figure out how in the fuck to get this bug out of the new app we’re working on.”

Christian chuckled softly. They were trying to create a new app that would allow users to share information on crimes committed, neighborhood offenders, and police locations while driving.

  “By yourself, boo?”

“Yea. Jacob is in the tech room with his crew but hearing them talk constantly was giving me a headache.”

Christian smiled and shook her head. Nash was often a quiet force. He spoke up when necessary, but he wasn’t the type that felt it was necessary to talk the entire time you were in someone’s presence. Small talk typically annoyed him – unless he was doing it with her. Honestly, it slick annoyed him then too, but he did it just to make her happy.

“You want me to bring you some aspirin? Have you eaten?”

“I won’t put you out like that, sweetheart.”

“It’s cool. I’m actually about to grab something to eat now. That’s why I was calling. You know I planned on coming to see Trent, right?”

  “…Right.”

“Well, Tyrell was here. They are going to the game tonight and Trent offered to take
me out to eat before they do.” Christian chuckled, thinking back to his offer.

“Trent? Where that lil nigga get some money from?” Nash’s smile was evident in his voice.

“Apparently Tyrell has him cutting grass and shit on the weekend, so he said it’s on him. So if you want me to bring you something I can from wherever we go.”

“Aight, sweetheart. Just something light and some Excedrin. I got a date night planned for us, so I don’t need anything too heavy.”

Christian squealed through her smile. “What we doing?”

“You know I’m not about to tell you that, woman. Enjoy your time with them. I’ll see you when you get here.”

She paused, not wanting to bring it up if he didn’t, but Christian couldn’t resist asking, “It doesn’t bother you that Tyrell will be there?”

“The fuck for? I got you now… ain’t no nigga capable of taking you from me.”

It was always so damn hard to say goodbye to Nash. As much as they wanted to fall asleep and wake up in each other’s arms, they agreed not to spend the night together. It gave them something to look forward to when they got married. Already, they knew so many parts of each other. With this new level of their bond, they wanted to keep things exciting in any way they could.

They’d yet to have sex, and even though Christian was anxious for it, Nash fulfilled her in ways she never thought were possible. Just lying in his arms, on his chest, listening to him breathe made her full.

“How are you ending your night?” he asked, leaning against the doorframe of her home.

The date that he’d planned for them was absolutely perfect. Nash was into sports, lounges, cars, and having a good time. He took Christian to a Neo Soul concert at the Landers center, then they went to a car show Downtown. By then, they were hungry again, so they grabbed a bite to eat at Pressure’s restaurant and headed back to her place. They were about an hour into a movie that neither of them were paying attention to before they were starting to fall asleep.

“I’m gonna try to take this sew-in out and wash my hair so my sister can squeeze me in for an appointment tomorrow.”
