How was Mia able to become half Kur’ik. There were lots of questions, but the answers were slow in coming. Cait was correct they didn’t know enough to string anything together, and he was going to have to wait. He hated waiting. They were waiting for him as he parked his car. He carried her into the building they used as the medical facility.

  “What happened?”

“We were shopping for bedroom furniture when we went outside I saw the shine of a gun. Once I spotted one I saw the rest. Fire was hit just as she tried to get into the car. I don’t know who hit her, but I know where I’ll be going tonight.”

Enzo and Ven nodded. “I’m going alone.” He called out as he placed her on the bed in a room.

  They just laughed at him.

“Never have a beta and his son, they’ll just make your life miserable.” He said it loud enough to make sure they heard him. They laughed harder.

Cait pulled out the tranq and squeezed it getting a drop of the liquid that went into her body.

She picked up a small tool and ran it over the drop and watched the readout.

  “Tristan listen to her heart.”

  “It’s too fast.”

Declyn watched as they filled a syringe and stuck it directly into her heart. He reared up, but Enzo and Ven were on either side of him.

“They’re saving her life. None us like their methods. Truly, I want them to develop methods we can all live with, but the last time I suggested that Cait rolled her eyes at me and told me my mate taught her how to do that.”

Declyn nodded and sat back down making his body loosen up.

  “How’s she doing?”

“Much better I don’t think she'll need another shot.”

“Then we’ll monitor her until she comes around.”

  “What was wrong?”

Cait turned to look at him, giving him her best doctor smile. The one that said everything is fine.

“I’m not completely sure what was in that syringe they mixed two or more sedatives together. I do know they were for large game making her heart rate spike without a counter agent she wasn’t going to make it. They obviously thought she was something other than human. They were wrong.

  “I hurt.”

All heads turned to look at Fire as she tried to move.

“Don’t move you’ve just gone through a trauma.”

  “What happened?”

“You were tranqed as you tried to get in the car.” He moved to her side holding her hand.

“Am I going to be fine?”

“Yes, your heartbeat is almost normal. Whatever they used seems to be burning off quickly.”

  “Can I have some water?”

Tristan gave her a small glass. “Drink slowly.” She nodded and took small sips.

“I think I’m ready to try and stand.”

“You could stay here a while longer, and we’ll watch over you.”

“Thanks, Cait, but I feel the need to walk. I think that will help me more.”

“Human’s you never seem to want to take the advice of a doctor.”

“Yeah most of us are stubborn like that.” She sat up a wave of dizziness took over her body making her fall forward before Declyn caught her. Cait just looked at her.

“I know, but I’ll be okay.”

She stood leaning heavily on Declyn as she stood on her own two feet. “I promise if I don’t feel better I’ll come back.”

She walked out the door leaning on Declyn’s arm. He placed her in the car and drove her up the street until they reached the house.

“I want to lay down for a little while.”

He took her to the bedroom not leaving until she fell asleep.

  Chapter Fifteen

She woke up to see the sun had gone down but the moon wasn’t out yet. Her phone was on the nightstand. The large white numbers read nine o’clock. She got up and walked through the house it was empty, and she felt much better. Instead of looking for Declyn she went into the bathroom to take a quick shower. She pulled out a pair of black jeans and paired it with a black t-shirt and hoodie. She pulled her hair up into a tight ponytail and stuffed it under her black ball cap. Her teeth were chewing on her bottom lip before she stopped and pulled out a pair of gloves that she bought on a whim.

The last thing she needed was a flashlight and a bobby pin which she stuck in her hair. Taking a deep breath, she walked out the house going to her car which was parked in the garage.

  “Going somewhere Alpia?”

Shocked rocked her for a minute. Declyn, Enzo, and Ven were leaning against his car with their arms folded over their chest looking at her. She looked at them one at a time before she planted her feet a little apart. She squared her shoulders and placed her arms over her chest. She looked defiantly at each of them.

“I am going somewhere. Where are the three of you going?”

  “Out.”

“Well, that’s perfect because that’s where I’m going.”

“I think you should stay in.”

“Not happening. If you’re concerned maybe you should go out with me.”

Enzo cleared his throat to cover his laughter. Declyn glared at him.

“Someone wanted an Alpha female.” He said just loud enough for Declyn and Ven to hear.

Ven coughed in his hand to cover his laughter.

“Get in the car and let’s see if we’re both going to the same place.”

She grinned and walked across the garage with his eyes glued to her ass. She made sure she put a little extra shake in it just for his sake.

“How did you get out of the house without Deja?” Declyn asked as he started the car?

“She knew there was only enough room for four.”

He shook his head and pulled out the garage before he gave in and laughed. She placed her hand on his thigh and squeezed.

“It’s okay wolf you’ll catch on eventually.”

His breath caught in his throat. He was either Declyn or Alpha, no one had ever called him anything else. Both names reminded him of his position, his responsibility. Fire didn’t care that he was in charge, she knew what he was to all the others, and she simply didn’t give a damn. To her he was wolf. Not werewolf something out of someone’s nightmares but wolf a creature that was reachable. He was of the night, but she was okay with that. She still hadn’t seen his other form, but when she did, he knew she would be okay with it. He was wolf and every time she called him that his soul felt a little lighter.

Enzo and Ven were staring with their mouths open.

“Close your mouths boys you’ll catch flies like that.”

  “Mom was right.”

  “Yep, she was right.”

  “What did she say?”

“She said we would like you, and she was right.”

“She’s usually right. It’s one of the things I love about her.”

Declyn pulled up behind her apartment building before he cut the engine.

“Please tell me you have gloves.” They pulled them out their back pockets and put them on before they exited the car.

“I told you watching that spy movie would be helpful,” Ven said with pride.

“My godson is so smart.” She winked at him and followed Declyn into the stairwell.

They were silent when they walked up the stairs the only one who made any noise was her. She winced every time she heard her steps, but everyone acted like they didn’t hear them. Declyn stopped on the third-floor landing and waited till they all came to a stop before he opened the door to make sure no one was in the hallway.

He led them to Ron’s door before he took off a glove and a long claw came out. He slid his claw into the lock and turned, the door opened silently, they walked in. She turned on her flashlight when she realized the others could see in the dark.

His apartment looked like a replica of hers, but everything was on the opposite side if you ignored the weapons he had spread around. There were pictures of her on the walls but not just her. There were oth
er females she had never seen before.

“Do you know any of them?”

“No, but he must be stalking them just like he was stalking me. As far as I know, none of them live in this building.” She walked around wondering why it was so cold in his apartment.

They checked out each room looking for something more to go on than the pictures and the weapons.

She walked back into the living room waiting for them as she glanced out the balcony doors.

  “Fire what’s wrong?”

She was hugging herself running her hands over her arms.

“I don’t understand why it’s so cold in here. It’s just the beginning of fall.”

“It’s not cold.” He looked back to meet Enzo and Ven’s eyes.

“I’m freezing.” Her voice was soft as her body trembled from the cold.

“Let’s get out of here.” He pulled her close noticing the coldness rising from her skin. He picked her up and carried her to the door wanting her out the apartment as quickly as possible.

They went straight to the car. He pulled the blanket out of the trunk and wrapped it around her before he turned the heat on in the car.

  “What happened back there?”

  “I don’t know.”

They all watched as she kept trembling even though the car was roasting with the heat that was pouring out the vents.

“Call Cait have her meet me at my house.”

Enzo pulled out his phone and called her. “She’ll be waiting.”

He pulled up in front of the house Ven got out of the car first.

  “May I?”

Declyn wanted to growl, Safire was his. He pulled himself back if she was to be the Alpha female he would have to share her but this was more than that. Ven was her godson she had claimed him.

  “You may.”

He pulled his godmother to him, she was barely conscious at this point. He held her against his chest before nodding several times. He closed his eyes as his body shuddered before he picked her up and handed her to his Alpha.

“She needs total immersion as well as skin to skin contact. She’s freezing from the inside out.” He closed the car door before looking at his father, then his Alpha. With a dip of his head, he walked away.

They stood and stared at him. Enzo turned to look at Declyn and shrugged his shoulders not understanding what his son was up to. He left lengthening his stride to catch up with him.

Declyn went into his house to find both Cait and Tristan waiting for them.

  “What happened?”

“I don’t know. We went into the apartment of the man that was stalking her. There were pictures of her and others on the wall. All females as well as guns everywhere but she started to get cold. I saw her rubbing her arms, but at first, I thought it was just a response from it being dark and maybe a little creepy. Soon she was shaking, and her skin was freezing.”

“She is freezing from the inside out we have to get her warmed up. Let’s start with a tub of hot water.”

  “Or an immersion field.”

  “Skin to skin—.”

“I’m on it.” He was already carrying her to the bathroom.

“You and I are going to have to have a serious talk Alpia. When I say stay at home, you say yes Alpha.” He was stripping her down before he turned on the water making it as hot as he thought she could take it. He stripped and picked her up stepping into the water. “When you’re safe it makes my heart easier, I can breathe easier and then I can do what it takes to make sure you’re safe. Right now, my heart is beating too fast, and my body is shaky. I’m always sure Alpia. I always know what I’m supposed to do but your making my world spin. I need you to stay in the house and be safe.”

“Life would be boring if I sat in the corner and waited for you to do your He-man thing.” Her lips were purple, and words came out broken as her body was shaking and her teeth were chattering.

“I was scared I was going to lose you.”

“It felt like something was attacking me. What happened?”

“I don’t know, and it makes me upset. There wasn’t anything I could see or pick up with my senses. Whatever it was affected you. I don’t know if it’s because you’re human or female.”

  “Female?”

“The rest of us were male, we can’t overlook any possibility.”

“You’re right I hadn’t thought of that. I just assumed it came after me because I was human.”

“Did you see anything? What did it feel like?”

“Have you ever heard of children being scared of the dark? Humans have a saying that the boogie man waits in the dark.”

“We are created as adults and as far as I know Kur’ik children aren’t scared of the dark…except for Ven. Enzo and I never understood what made him scared of the dark, but it took a long time to overcome it.”

“It felt like there was something in the dark reaching out for me. No matter how I tried to shine the light on it, I wasn’t fast enough. Then I thought I felt something like someone scratched me, but there wasn’t any break in my skin, but I started to get cold. Soon I was so cold I couldn’t think about the shadows all I could think about was staying warm.”

She shivered, and he pulled her closer.

“Whoever decided this should be the treatment, me naked in your arms. I owe them a thank you.”

“You may want to rethink that because it was your godson’s idea.”

“I think I’m blushing. I know you’re all aliens, but there’s something about Ven that’s different.”

“I agree with you, but I’m just starting to see it.”

Her fingers went to her hair making her groan. “I’m going to have to wash and condition this stuff to keep it from tangling on me.”

  “How do you feel?”

“Better.” Her fingers pressed against his chest before she began to draw lazy designs against him.

  “Stop it.”

“Why?” She took his nipple into her mouth and sucked before she nipped him with her teeth.

His hands went to her hair grasping it. He intended to pull her head away. Instead, he held her closer.

“I almost lost you. You need rest. Cait should look at you to make sure you’re fine, and there aren’t any lingering repercussions.”

“My body is telling me I’m more than fine.” She switched to his other nipple sucking on it hard as she rocked back and forth enjoying the tug of her lips on him.

“I need you.” His voice was low when he whispered in her ear.

  “Need?”

“I blew past want the first day I saw you. I need you in my life. I don’t breathe correctly unless you're near. I need you.”

She wrapped her arms around him as he rocked her back and forth.

“Think about it Safire because when I make love to you, I’m going to claim you as mine. No thinking, no stopping, no going back, but I know you need a choice. I won’t take that away from you. You let me know when you’re ready.” He kissed her one last time before he left the shower.

  Chapter Sixteen

Damn male! How was it she got the one that actually cared about her feelings when all she wanted was to feel him deep inside of her?

You’re only pissed because he did the right thing.

If he did the wrong thing, you’d be on the warpath.

  Is there no pleasing you?

No, I’m horny. Of course, there is no pleasing me. She smiled in the midst of her irritation. There was nothing worse than when the voices her head were correct. If you want to be helpful why don’t you tell me what happened in Ron’s house?

It was an old and powerful enemy. That was the alien voice in her head, and she was going to ignore her.

That’s what I love about humans, the ability to ignore what is right in front of their noses.

She finished conditioning her hair before she stepped out the shower and took a blow dryer to it. When she was done, it pooled around her shoulders in waves. Declyn was waiting on the bed
for her.

“Are you ready to turn in or are you hungry? You haven’t had much to eat today.”

“I think I’ve been through too much. I just want to get some sleep.”

He nodded and moved over so she could crawl to the other side of the bed. He turned the lights off and laid down.

“Can I lay in your arms?”

“I thought you might not ask.”

He pulled her close with a sigh as her body snuggled into his warmth. He kissed her before closing his eyes and allowing his body to sleep.

The buzzing around her head had her moving restlessly until it stopped and she snuggled down for a deeper sleep. Then a buzzing sound went off telling her she had a text. Carefully she disengaged from Declyn.

It was a picture of a woman and two teens. A mother and her two sons. They were the family Cathy was working with. She almost had them back into normal housing and the mother into a real job before she was killed.

The text read ‘if you want them to live you’ll meet me at your place.’

He wasn’t ever going to stop, not until he got his hands on her. Suddenly she was glad that Declyn was one of the good ones. This way she wasn’t tied to him, and he wouldn’t miss her when she turned up missing. She crept out of bed grabbing her clothes and shoes and dressed in the living room. She felt the tears in her chest, but she refused to let them fall from her eyes. She wished she had more time with him, but she couldn’t allow another innocent person to suffer for whatever imaginary sins she had committed.

She tiptoed out the house and into the garage hoping he wouldn’t hear the engine when she turned the key. She pulled the car out onto the empty street and headed for the barrier.

The darkness felt like it was reaching for her making her jump as she drove through it. The idea of going back to that apartment building made her queasy whatever was in Ron’s apartment would be there to welcome her, she was sure of that.

She parked her car in her old spot. She wanted the world to know she was there, maybe it would help in some way if she advertised her presence.

Once again, she took the stairs not wanting to be shut up in a tiny space. The door was slightly open when she got there. The light in the hallway was off leaving nothing but the emergency lights that glared creepily making her shake. She placed her hand on the door and slowly opened it.
