“So how was the first time?” Kenna asked the next day. She had wanted to ask this for years, and my answer had to be good.

“You mean the first three times?”

  “Stop it!” she said.

“Mm, I don’t think stopping is possible.”

“Stop it,” she said again, looking like she might faint. Shocking her was such a rare thrill. “So it was great. Like really, really great?”

  “Like otherworldly. But better.”

She squealed, and I cracked up, glad Jack and Sophie were at school. In fact, school hours were good for all kinds of new and non-interruptible activities.

“What about foster parenting and adoption?” she asked. “Have you talked more about that?”

“We’re meeting with the social worker, Francine, this week as a tentative first step. And guess what? So is Kat.”

“She’s going to let the system help her?”

“Yes, and I think she’s going to help the system. She’s enrolling in sociology classes at KCCC. And by the way, we’re meeting at Nailed It soon. Do you want to come with us?”

I’d gotten a reminder call from the salon about my appointment around the same time as Kat’s, and we’d decided not to cancel. She wanted to tell me about her latest talk with Corey, and I wanted to hear about her three new roommates—Joey, Buck, and little Bruno. She and Joey were just friends, but they were closer than ever.

“Absolutely. Should we stop at Atlas Tattoos and introduce Kat to Tracy too?”

“Good idea, and maybe we’ll get a little art ourselves,” I said, feeling more daring than ever.

“What would yours look like, and where would it go?” she asked.

“I don’t know. It would be something about family. Or trust. Or letting go of fear. Or all of the above. And it would go somewhere appropriate. What about you?”

“I don’t know either. Something whimsical and fun, I guess. Somewhere Andy will like.”

I hugged Kenna spontaneously, thankful for our differences and connections.

“Let’s go by the gym when the kids get home,” I suggested.

I was finally joining her health club, and she’d arranged for a family membership, even though Dean and I weren’t official yet.

“It’s the day I’ve been waiting for,” she said.

“Me too, and we need to celebrate. Sky’s the limit.”
