“I have been feeling especially down since the other day. I keep looking at my brother and Cara and how they are together and wondering why can’t I find something like that. Even a tiny bit of it.” She was folding some towels the maid had brought up for her and putting them away. “They never fight, at least not so I can see or anyone else and it is like they are perfect together. How can one get to be so lucky as to find their soul mates? While people like me end up with men who are either lack luster or turned out to be batting for the other team?”

Carolyn laughed at her reference. “They are perfect together aren’t they? And then you are tempted to hate them.” She admitted. “I remember when I was there at that time, my life in shambles and big and heavy with a baby; I had no idea if it was for my husband or the man whom I had the foolish fling with and I hated my sister. I remember you sat me down and explained to me that I need to be happy for her and that the crush I had on your brother was very natural because most women could not help themselves.” She laughed again. “You saved me back then and I am here to tell you as my very dear and best friend that you are going to get through this. You are auntie Jen and those children including Cara-Lee love you beyond measure. You play an important part in that household. I swear if you were not around it would fall to pieces. My sister might be a lot of things but she certainly is not one to tend to the household. You are important to a lot of people Jen and I am advising you to take things easy and if romance is going to happen let it happen in its own time and space.”

“You are right.” Jennifer said with a bright smile. “I do play an important part right here and I know Matthew and Cara appreciate what I do around here because they are always saying it. I am supposed to go to the spa for a day of pampering that they paid for since last week but I have not been able to find the time. I love to be here when the children get home. You are right Caro the children including yours bring me joy beyond anything I have ever experienced before and they make everything all worthwhile.”

“I am here to help honey. Now I want you to take yourself and plan the day when you are going to go get yourself pampered and the next time we speak to each other I must hear how relaxing the day was.”

“I will,” Jennifer reassured her with a smile. “Now my dear please make sure you get as much rest as possible. I have to go outside to see to the pruning of the roses and the landscaping. We need to get the pool uncovered and cleaned out. I promise I will not stay long to talk with you Caro,” she said warmly.

“You had better not or I will be calling.” Carolyn threatened good naturedly before ending the call.

Jennifer sat on the side of her bed with a pleased smile as she looked around her immaculate room. Her brother had given her an entire suite for herself which included a lovely sitting room, a huge bathroom, another bedroom that she had turned into an office and a balcony where she sat and had tea when the weather was nice.

She allowed her niece and nephews to run amok in the sitting room and play with their toys when they came over to her side of the house after school. She would sit in her soft chaise lounge and watch as they played together and argued sometimes and even fought which she would go over and break up and speak to them sternly.

Carolyn was right: she had a very good life and it was time she started shaking off the negativity and start enjoying herself. With a decisive expression on her face she reached for a thin cashmere sweater and putting it on, she headed downstairs. It was time to go outside and see to it that the gardeners removed every vestige of winter.

  Chapter 8

Cara was resolute about their children riding with the others on the bus the day of the activities planned for the farm. Marissa had called and said that she and Denzel were soaking up the sun and having a very good time. She had called and reminded the staff at the farm to prepare for them and that they were supposed to reach there ‘when the cock crows’. “In order for them to get the full experience. They will be taught to milk cows and taste some of that creamy dairy that will put some meat on their bones.”

So they would be leaving at six a.m. on Friday morning because school was out for the spring. Matthew had wanted to send one of the drivers with one of the SUV’s because he had meetings scheduled for the entire day and would not get there until later in the evening. Jennifer would not be going as she was going to use the opportunity to go to the spa to spend the day.

“I know you want to protect them baby but it is going to seem like we think our children are better than others.” Cara told him firmly and he reluctantly agreed.

Cara had the driver drop her and the children at the center; where they were all going to meet and board the bus. Bobby was already there with the bus and of course Christine and Daniel. Very soon the other children and parents had arrived and Janet and Jeannette came over from next door. They had been instructed not to bring anything concerning food with them as there was going to be a full spread served to them.

They quickly settled and were soon on their way. The children watched fascinated as the landscape changed and as they whizzed by they saw wild flowers growing at the side of the road and deer lifting their heads to look at the passing vehicle. Vehicular traffic was few and far between and the vegetation was lush and green.

Nursery rhymes and jingles were sung to pass the time but the children were more interested in the scenery. They turned off the road and into the long cobbled driveway and saw cows grazing along the way. The bus stopped near to the large red brick house and the children filed out first making sure to go first to the corral where the horses were.

The farm hands waved at them and came over to introduce themselves. The housekeeper, ‘Miss Millie’ as she told them to call her came out and with a smile on her round weathered face said she had breakfast ready. “Miss Marissa told us to expect you very early.” There was a table outside with a dazzling white tablecloth on it and a sumptuous display of food. There were stacks of strawberry and chocolate chip pancakes, maple syrup, large jugs of creamy milk, freshly squeezed orange juice and coffee for the adults. There were also scrambled eggs and lightly toasted bread which the woman said proudly was made only this morning.

The children could hardly wait to finish eating to go and look at the cows being milked and they were taken into the barn to watch and given turns one by one. It was an amusing experience as some of them got milk squirted into the faces and in their mouths. To everyone’s surprise both Joel and Jeremy were naturals and were squeezing the milk from the teats like experts making quick work of filling up the pails.

“These two would do very well here Miss Cara,” Jonathon, an old wizened farm hand told her with a toothy grin.

Next they were shown how to reach underneath the chickens to get the eggs and placed them carefully into baskets. In between they were given the creamy milk blended together with the strawberries they had picked to drink before going off on some other adventure.

The place was huge and there were several people working there, some tending to the acres and acres of vegetables planted, some of them ready for reaping. The children and adults alike had the chance to pick corn and small plum tomatoes that were going to be used for lunch.

The kitchen was a hive of activity and Jeanette offered to help with the baking and the cooking. Very soon a delicious aroma came wafting from the room with the smoke curling upwards from the chimney there because of an old fashioned range that was used in the kitchen.

To the children’s delight and amazement a bell was tolled to announce the lunch hour and the spread was impressive. They were asked if the farm hands could eat at the same table with them and the same time and the adults looked at Miss Millie in surprise.

“Why would you even ask that?” Cara said to her.

“I have to ask Miss Cara because some folks would be offended to have the help eating from the same table.”

“We are not those folks,” Cara told her firmly.

There was tender roast beef, honey roasted ham, fried chicken which they had t
o assure the children that it was not the chicken they had come to know and love, fresh vegetables, sweet potatoes and tasty yams and apple and cherry pies. There were gallons of lemonade and iced tea to drink the food down.

“We are definitely going to be fat.” Christine said with a groan.

“I would still be in love with you,” Bobby told her softly putting his hand around her waist.

“Liar,” she said; a smile lighting up her face.

After lunch they rested a little bit and then were taken on horseback rides along the corral, the children squealing in excitement as the horses were allowed to canter a little with them.

It was approaching four in the afternoon when they were given milk and pie before they boarded the bus and each child along with the parents were given care packages which included: fruits and vegetables and bottles of fresh cow’s milk along with slices of pie to take home.

Cara settled back against the soft cushion of the seat she was in and watched her children chat animatedly with the others beside them. Janice was on a roll, her blond curls raining down her face and onto her shoulders and her green eyes dancing as she spoke to Melanie a quiet dark skinned girl with big braids who was sitting beside her. Janice was wearing denims and a pink and white top different from the green polka dot blouse she had worn at the start of the trip.

All the children had had to change and wash up before they left the farm because they had all gotten grungy from the running up and down and participating in farm work. Both Joel and Jeremy were seated together in the seat across from their sister and Jeremy had his head on his brother’s shoulder, his eyes drooping wearily.

“This has been quite a day,” Jeanette came over from where she had been sitting and came to join her.

“The children and the parents will never forget it.” Cara murmured. “We are going to plan to bring them back some time in the summer.”

“I thought Matthew would have come at some point.”

“Meetings ran over and I told him not to worry we will see him at home later.” Cara told her. “And of course the children have lots of pictures to show him including the videos Janice made with her camcorder.”

“She is such a beautiful and vivacious child,” Jeanette said looking at the girl as she laughed at something Melanie said to her. She was going to be a raving beauty when she grew up and her brothers were going to break hearts, Jeanette thought. “Such beautiful children.” She added wistfully.

“When was the last time you spoke to your kids and grandkids?” Cara asked her.

She sighed and looked down at her hands seeing the highlighted veins there and the age spots. “I speak to them often but they are very busy people. I am so happy I decided to have Janet come and live with me and those other two young ladies before they moved out to go on their own. I have done some good Cara and it is all because of you.” She reached out and took the girl’s hands in hers. “You have a very big heart and a kind soul and I want you to remember that and never stop what you are doing.”

“I won’t but you are a big part of it and so is Christine and now Marissa. I am honored to be working with people like you.”

They continued the rest of the way in silence enjoying the darkened landscape and the clean air until they turned off towards the city.

The children insisted on giving their father and aunt a blow by blow account of their trip.

“Daddy you should have been there and seen us milking the cows!” Jeremy said jumping up and down in his father’s lap in excitement. They were seated in the living room after dinner and the children were telling them of their experiences.

“I was too.” Joel had his hands around his dad’s neck from behind. “Mr. Jonathon said we were naturals which mean that we did it very well right mommy?” he asked looking at his mother who nodded as she sipped her coffee.

Janice who was seated on one of her father’s thigh and not to be outdone declared: “We fed the ducks and picked strawberries and I picked the most.” She said looking at her brothers triumphantly.

“You had milk all over your face because you could not do it properly!” Joel told her scornfully.

“It was only one time!’ she cried shoving him a little bit.

“All right guys we are going to have a discussion without it getting physical.” Matthew told them mildly. “I am sure you all did well and had fun and that was the most important thing.”

Janice who could not help herself, stuck her tongue out at her twin and he returned the favor. “Guys enough or it is off to bed without any stories for you.” Cara warned them.

  “Sorry mommy,” Joel said.

“Sorry,” Janice mumbled still sore at what her brother had said.

“So how was the riding?” Matthew asked trying to diffuse the situation.

They told him in great details how the horse felt and what their names were and in the middle of them telling their dad about the incident where some chickens were squawking at them, one by one they fell asleep.

“I guess they are all tuckered out from the excitement,” he said with a grin. Jennifer came over and took up Joel gently and Cara picked up Jeremy while Matthew lifted Janice gently into his arms and they took them to bed.

“How was the spa?” Cara asked her sister in law as soon as they had put the children to bed and was on their way to their separate suites. Matthew had already gone in for the night.

“Invigorating,” Jennifer said with a pleased smile. “The seaweed wrap made my skin felt as smooth as a baby’s bottom.”

“I am happy you went. You deserve it.” Cara told her clasping her hand briefly.

“Thank you Cara.” She said suddenly. Cara had reached her door and was about to say goodnight but stopped when she told her thanks.

  “For what?”

“For being the best sister in law a girl could ever desire.” She said soberly.

“Thank you honey.” She reached out and hugged her tightly.

Her husband was waiting for her so that they could take a shower with her.

“So how was your day?” he asked her as they went into the bathroom together.

“Exhausting!” she said with a laugh, stepping out of her strappy slippers and unbuttoning her blouse. “Try keeping up with so many children at that age with boundless energy and you will know what I mean.”

“I heard the food was very good.” He commented as they stepped into the large shower stall together.

“Baby the food was out of this world,” she sighed and leaned back as he ran the sponge over her body. “But this is way better,” she murmured as he got to her pubic area.

“Yeah?” his tone was silky as he parted her legs and dipped underneath.

“Hmm,” she rested her head back against the tiles. “Like that baby.” She said huskily. He had parted the lips of her vagina and was rubbing between the folds gently. “Oh yes,” the words came out as a sigh. “Don’t stop.”

He used his soapy finger to dip inside her and she moaned softly, her breath hitching when he came closer and captured her lips with his. Cara shivered when his fingers pressed deep inside her and his tongue touched hers. With a cry of submission she wrapped her hands around his neck and gave in to his touch.

Matthew woke up the next morning roasting with fever and his head felt as if there were nails being driven inside his skull. He had been feeling achy since he had been at the office yesterday but had taken some painkillers and had not thought anything more about it.

He tried to get off the bed but groaned sharply as the pain winged across his brow. He could barely turn his head the pain was so intense. His throat felt parched and hoarse as he tried to call out for his wife who was not on the bed. He knew she would often go downstairs to the kitchen and sit, drink coffee and read the paper in peace before going into the children’s rooms to check on them.

Taking a deep breath he tried getting up slowly but the minute he swung his feet off the bed the d
izziness started again. Reaching out a hand for the buzzer that led straight to the kitchen he rang it knowing that if she was there she would come up to see what was happening.

It took a few minutes for her to reach the bedroom. “I thought you were never-“ she began but stopped when she saw him slumped sideways on the bed. She raced up the steps swiftly and turned him over, recoiling as she felt the hotness of his skin.

  “Matthew!” she cried.

He opened his eyes briefly and looked at her. “I think I have the flu,” he said trying to smile at her. “I need to use the bathroom but the pain in my head is too much, you are going to have to call the doctor.”

Cara did not want to leave him but the phone was on one of the tables further in the room and she had to go and get it. She flew down the steps swiftly and grabbed one of the phones, dialing the number quickly. “He has a massive headache and he is burning up.” She told Doctor Wellington.

“Thank you Doctor.” She said when the man told her he was on his way. She hung up the phone and went into the bathroom to get some rags and run them beneath the cold water tap before hurrying back into the room.

“He is coming,” she placed the folded rag onto his forehead, alarmed at how clammy his skin felt. He could barely keep his eyes open. “He will be here shortly baby.” She reached down and felt his chest and used one of the rags to wipe him down.

She turned her head as she heard the discreet knock on the door and called for the person to come in.

“I hope I am not interrupting a tender-“

“Matthew has a sky high fever and a massive headache. Doctor Wellington is coming by now.” She said interrupting the woman. “Could you go downstairs and bring him up and I have not been into the children’s rooms yet. I had told Mrs. Morgan and Elise to get them ready to go to the zoo but we won’t be going again.”

“I will deal with it.” Jennifer climbed the steps and felt his skin, pulling her hand back in alarm. “I will call and see how near he is.” She told her sister in law moving swiftly.
