He pushed forward with his hips, sliding further into Mia’s sex. Oh God, he felt so big. He filled her, pushing into her all the way, stretching her pussy with his girth.

Mia gasped and pushed back against him, wriggling her hips so that her tight pussy massaged the big cock inside her body.

Carter looked at her with an intense gaze, his muscular arms holding her up easily, his hands gripping her thighs, his hips pistoning back and forth to drive his cock back and forth within Mia’s hot, tight sex.

He growled with pleasure each time he thrust forward.

Mia felt the rough tree bark sliding against the back of her sweater but that sensation was overwhelmed by the feeling of having Carter’s huge dick inside her.

She and Carter moved together perfectly as if they had been doing this all their lives. They were in synch in a way Mia had never known before. Fucking Carter seemed natural to her, as if all the other times she had ever sex were nothing more than practice sessions leading to this moment of perfection.

His thrusts became faster, more urgent. His eyes closed and he threw back his head as his orgasm approached. His fingers dug into the flesh of Mia’s thighs as he began to lose control as he let pleasure overtake his body.

“Give it to me,” Mia whispered, gyrating her hips to please his cock. She could hardly believe she was acting like this. Until now, her sexual experiences had been lacklustre and, dare she say it, boring. Carter seemed to have awakened a fire inside her that was making her forget her inhibitions and act on instinct.

Carter looked at her again and his eyes seemed glazed as his body focused on its primal urge to release his seed.

  “Do it,” Mia whispered.

He let out a roar and drove forward with his hips over and over, pushing Mia further up the tree with the force of each thrust.

His cock twitched inside her suddenly and she felt a liquid heat flood her pussy.

Carter groaned and leaned in to kiss Mia while he came, still thrusting up inside her wanton pussy.

The kiss was passionate and deep and their lips didn’t part until Carter’s orgasm had subsided and his thrusts weakened.

He remained inside her, still holding her up against the tree and looking into her eyes. “That was amazing,” he whispered.

She couldn’t argue with that. It had been the best sex of her life. Nothing else had even come close, no pun intended.

“Yes, it was,” she said breathlessly.

A concerned looked came into his eyes. “We didn’t use anything.”

That was another thing about this encounter that was a first for Mia. She always used a condom. Always. But her uncontrollable lust had driven her into having sex without any thought of protection.

“I’m on the pill,” she told Carter. “And I don’t sleep around.” Then she felt herself blush and added. “Despite what just happened, I haven’t had many partners at all. And I haven’t had sex in a long time.”

“Me neither,” he said. “In fact, I’ve only had one partner before tonight.”

Mia couldn’t contain her surprise. “Really?” He had touched her like an expert and she was sure he could bed any woman he wanted. So why wasn’t he bedding the town’s female population every night?

“Really,” he said, pulling out of her and setting her on her feet. “Now I should find my clothes and get dressed.”

“About that,” Mia said. “Why are you walking around out here naked?”

He turned away from her and said, “It doesn’t matter. Just forget you saw me.”

“Forget?” She strode toward him and grabbed his muscular shoulder, turning him so that he faced her again. “I can’t forget what just happened between us. Can you?”

He put his hands on her arms and leaned forward slightly as if he were going to kiss her. But before their lips met, he said, “I’ll never forget what just happened. But you have too many questions; questions I can’t answer right now. You need to forget your job for a while and stop trying to figure out what’s happening here.”

“Being a reporter isn’t just my job, Carter; it’s who I am. So what is happening here?” She wasn’t sure if she was asking why he was walking naked in the woods or what was happening between them.

If what Carter had said was true, and he had only had one partner and hadn’t had sex in a while, then tonight’s encounter was just as crazy for him as it was for Mia.

Crazy and hot and deliciously erotic.

“I can’t answer that,” he said. “I need to get dressed.” He stalked off through the trees in search of his clothes.

Mia put her hands on her bare hips and glared at his back as he walked away. He might have muscles and a tight ass and a cock to die for but Carter was so frustrating.

She grabbed her jeans and pulled them up her legs. Her panties had been ruined by Carter’s eagerness but she didn’t want to leave them out here in the woods, so she stuffed them into her pocket.

Carter reappeared after a few minutes, wearing his uniform. “Listen,” he said, “I didn’t expect any of this to happen. I lost control, and that doesn’t usually happen to me. Meeting you tonight has made me a little crazy.”

Mia nodded. She couldn’t argue with that; they had both acted crazily tonight. Everything had happened so fast. But she hoped Carter wasn’t trying to say that it had all been a moment of madness and that there wouldn’t be a repeat performance.

“I can’t tell you anything about the creature you saw,” he said, “or why I was naked. I might tell you sometime, but not anytime soon.” He touched her shoulder lightly. “But I’d like to see you again,” he said softly. “Maybe we could have dinner tomorrow. I know the best place in town.”

“Okay,” Mia said. “I’m stuck in town until the van gets fixed anyway, so dinner sounds great.” She didn’t want to sound too eager, even though the thought of dinner with Carter, and what might happen afterward, sent a shiver of anticipation down her spine.

Besides, she might be able to get him to tell her about what was really going in here. Belladonna Falls was obviously hiding some kind of secret, and judging by Carter’s reluctance to talk about it, the story must be something very big. It might even be career making. She could end up on Marilyn Hart’s sofa yet.

“Let’s go back to the others,” Carter said, leading her through the shadows between the shafts of moonlight.

Mia followed, reflecting on the night’s events.

She had experienced the best sex of her life, gotten a date with the town’s handsome police chief, and could be on the trail of the biggest story of her career.

Meeting the monster on the road could turn out to be the best thing that had ever happened to her.

  * * *

When they got back to the road, a tow truck was parked in front of the van, orange lights flashing on the roof of its cab.

The truck driver, a thin bearded man in his fifties wearing a flannel shirt and jeans and a black baseball cap with a gold Harley Davison logo, was using the truck’s winch to drag the damaged van onto the truck’s bed.

Jake and the deputy were standing nearby, watching the truck driver do his job. Jake had retrieved his and Mia’s suitcases from the van and set them on the ground near the patrol cars.

Mia hoped Jake would think that her ruffled appearance and bark-covered clothing was due to walking through the woods and not anything else, like having sex against a tree.

She blushed at the thought of what she had done with Carter. Her sex life up to this point had been the tamest shade of vanilla yet here she was walking out of the woods with her torn panties in her pocket.

“Hey,” Jake said when he saw her. “Did you discover anything? The deputy was pretty mad when you ran off like that.”

She shook her head. “Nothing.” She took Jake’s arm and led him toward the police cars, lowering her voice to a whisper. “There’s something strange going on here. I’m going to stick around until I find out what it is. We went all the way to Broken Rock
looking for a story but there’s one right here in Belladonna Falls, I’m sure of it.”

He smiled thinly. “Mia, I have to get home to Karen. She wasn’t too pleased about me coming on this trip in the first place. If I don’t get home by tomorrow, my life won’t be worth living.”

“This could be big,” she said. “Really big. The story we’ve been waiting for.”

Jake shrugged. “I can’t stay. If you want to wait around here, you can drive the van back home when you’re done.” He looked over at the vehicle being winched onto the tow truck. “I’ll leave you some money for the repairs.”

“Are you sure you can’t stay?” She would rather chase the story down with Jake’s help. She wasn’t used to working solo.

“I would if I could,” he said. “But I’m going to get a cab to the nearest airport and catch a flight home.”

  Mia sighed. “Okay.”

“You know how to use all the camera equipment in the van,” Jake said. “You’ll be fine. But I have to tell you, Mia, that I find it hard to believe there’s a story worth telling in this nowhere town.”

“If there’s a story here, I’ll find it,” she assured him.

Jake smiled. “I’m sure you will.”

Carter came over with his deputy. “Sam will take you two into town,” he said.

He handed Mia a business card. She looked at him as she took it but his eyes were cold, and it was hard to believe they were the same eyes that had looked into hers as Carter had come inside her.

As she remembered that moment, a quiver of pleasure ran through her body.

“This way,” the deputy said, leading them to his car.

Mia got in the back seat next to Jake. The deputy got into the driver’s seat and pulled out into the road. As they drove toward the lights in the distance that were the lights of Belladonna Falls, Mia looked down at the card in her hand.

It was Carter McClintock’s official chief of police business card. It was a white card with the police force logo printed in blue next to Carter’s office telephone number.

She turned it over in her hand. On the reverse, Carter had written his cell phone number in blue ink. And below that he had written two words.

  Call me.

Carter watched Sam’s car pull away and head toward town. He could hardly believe what had happened with Mia in the woods. He was so affected by The Call that the urge to mate with Mia had overwhelmed him. He would have been able to stop himself if she hadn’t been willing but she had been open to his advance. In fact, she had initiated it. He wondered if she felt the powerful connection between them, even though she wasn’t a shifter.

Jim O’Connor, the tow truck driver and owner of O’Connor’s Auto in town, came up to Carter. “She’s all loaded up, Chief. I’ll take her to my garage and start work on her tomorrow.” He gestured to the van secured to the back of his truck.

  “Okay, Jim,” Carter replied.

“What drove them off the road? Was it a rogue wolf?” Jim asked. He was a wolf shifter himself, and Carter noticed the silver ring on his finger.

“Yeah,” Carter replied. “The full moon is the bane of my life.”

Jim chuckled. “At least you don’t have to deal with the curse like we do.”

“True, but I do have to clean up the mess. And now there’s a potential killer in town. The next time that person shifts, all hell is going to break loose around here.”

“I’m sure you can handle it, Chief.” Jim turned toward his truck, then paused and turned to face Carter again. “That big blonde sure is easy on the eyes. I usually go for more petite women but she is something else. Very pretty.”

Carter raised an eyebrow and smiled. “You should get home, Jim, before your wife misses you too much.”

Jim laughed. “Yeah, I guess you’re right. Still, a man can dream.” He went to his truck, climbed into the cab, and gunned the engine before rolling out onto the highway, giving Carter a farewell blast of his horn before he headed for town.

Carter returned to his cruiser and slid into the driver’s seat. Before he started the engine, he let his thoughts drift to Mia King. If he was going to claim her as his mate, he had to tell her that he was a bear shifter. He would have to tell her about the town.

The problem was, he didn’t know if he could trust her to keep the secret to herself. She was a reporter after all, and proof of the existence of shifters was a huge thing. Mia could destroy the entire town if she went to the media with a story about Belladonna Falls and its inhabitants.

Carter sighed. On the one hand, he was sworn to protect the citizens of Belladonna Falls. On the other, he knew that Mia was his intended life mate, and he could not perform The Claim with her unless she knew about shifters.

His inner bear knew what it wanted. Carter could feel an ache of longing for Mia. He wanted to be close to her again.

He had to put all thoughts of her out of his mind for now. He needed to get through this night shift and then go home and get some sleep. He wasn’t going to be any use to anyone unless he was thinking straight.

He started the engine and drove out onto the highway. He might as well see if he could find any trace of the rogue wolf in town.

As he approached town, he drove past Molly’s Diner, where he had been enjoying honey-drizzled eggs earlier.

Everything had seemed so simple then. Now, his intended mate was in town, there was a rogue wolf on the loose, and Belladonna Fall’s secret was in danger.

He looked at the full moon hanging big and bright over the town.

That moon had a lot to answer for.

  * * *

Mia entered her room at the Belladonna Falls Hotel, left her suitcase by the door and collapsed onto the bed. The long drive from Broken Rock had exhausted her, not to mention the vigorous sex in the woods with the chief of police.

She felt her face heat up at the thought of how naughty she had been. What had gotten into her? Well, she knew what had gotten into her but what had made her act so brazenly with Carter McClintock?

Although she was embarrassed by her behavior, she also found this new, sexual part of her exciting. The encounter in the woods had not felt cheap or seedy; it had been amazing and as perfect as a sexual fantasy.

She sat up on the bed and surveyed her room. The hotel was located on the outskirts of Belladonna Falls and looked like any typical roadside hotel in America. It was basic and functional.

Mia’s second floor room consisted of a double bed flanked by wooden nightstands, a long desk, a flat screen TV bolted to the wall, a small built-in closet, and a bathroom. The room smelled clean and was lit tastefully with lamps on the nightstands and a corner lamp by the desk.

After the deputy had dropped her and Jake here, Jake had called for a cab to the airport while Mia had checked into the hotel.

She already missed her cameraman. His absence made her feel like she was alone in a town of strangers, which, of course, she was. Even the police chief was a stranger, despite what they had done together earlier.

She took the business card from her purse and looked again at the message he had written on the reverse side. Call me.

She would definitely do that. Already, she missed being close to Carter. In fact, she was sure that her feelings of missing Jake were mixed with feelings of missing the handsome police chief.

That’s crazy, you barely know him.

Still, she couldn’t deny how she felt, and she was looking forward to seeing him again as soon as possible. He had mentioned dinner, and that sounded great. She would get a chance to talk to him and maybe question him about why he was naked earlier.

She felt sleepy but got up and went into the bathroom to turn on the shower. As the hot water rained down into the tub and steamed filled the room, Mia wiped her hand across the mirror over the sink, clearing he condensation so that she could look at herself.

Her reflection actually didn’t look as bad as she had feared it might. For a woman who had seen a mon
ster, been in a car crash, and had wild sex in the woods, she looked good.

Her blonde hair was mussed up, her make up a little smeared, and her sweater was covered with pine needles and bark, but all things considered, that wasn’t too bad.

She stripped and stepped under the shower. The hot water felt amazing and she stood beneath it for a long while, eyes closed, enjoying the sensation of the spray on her skin.

There was a small bottle of citrus-scented shower gel on the side of the tub. Mia squeezed it into her hands and soaped her body, caressing it languidly. She remembered Carter’s touch, the incredible feeling of having him inside her.

When her hands reached her thighs, she found little sore spots where Carter’s fingers had dug into her during his most desperate moment.

She smiled at the memory and continued soaping her body.

  She would call Carter tomorrow.

He had made love to her so expertly, and she was ready for a repeat performance.

By the time she was dried, dressed in her pyjamas, and in bed, Mia found that she was still grinning about how naughty she had been with the police chief.

It was as if meeting him had awoken a side of her that had been locked away all her life. Carter had been the key to opening up her sexual nature.

She closed her eyes and snuggled against the pillow.

Tomorrow, she wanted to meet the police chief again and explore this new side of herself further.

Carter got out of bed at lunchtime the following day. After meeting Mia, the rest of his night shift had passed without incident and he had returned home in the early hours of the morning. After showering, he had gone to bed and slept deeply until his alarm had woken him at eleven.

Now, he was standing in his kitchen wearing only his shorts, holding a slice of toast in one hand and a mug if coffee in the other. The toast was covered with strawberry jam.

Like all bear shifters he knew, Carter had a sweet tooth. Luckily, his shifter metabolism was able to handle the sweets and desserts more efficiently than a human and Carter didn’t put in any extra weight no matter how much junk he ate. All those extra calories were burned up when he shifted into bear form.
