Zac to the Rescue!

Page 8

by Katrina Kahler

“Use the dial to open it,” I said. “The code is 314.”

Zac set the digital dial to 314. The rock beeped.

A small opening appeared. “Wow, there’s a key in here!” Zac said, pulling out the key.

From Zac’s front pocket, I pointed to the door. “Open it!”

Zac put the key in the lock and turned it. We heard a click. Zac opened the door. I was home!

We walked into the living room. “Wow, this looks just like a normal home!” Zac said.

He put me down on the coffee table. “It is a normal home,” I said. “Well mostly.”

Zac rubbed his stomach. “Ah, do you have any food? I’m kind of hungry,” he said.

I pointed to the left. “I’m sure we do, in the kitchen. Pick me up and I’ll show you.”

Zac bent down and picked me up. He felt so strong. We walked over to the kitchen. Bobby followed with Joe in his hand.

“I see the fridge!” Zac said, with a bit too much pride in his voice.

Walking to the fridge there was a note on the door.

“Scientists have such neat hand writing,” Zac said.

Obviously, Becky had helped Mom with the yard sale and now she was being rewarded with a shopping trip. Well, what I could say. I would have helped more with the yard sale if I hadn’t got myself shrunk. I’ll take down the tables when I get big again.

Zac opened the fridge and grabbed an apple.

“I want one too!” Bobby said, grabbing his own apple. Bobby took a huge bite. He started chewing, little apple bits falling out of his mouth as he chewed. “I never thought little people would have such a big house,” he said. “How do you get up onto the chairs and into the fridge?”

Zac rolled his eyes and shook his head. He looked down at me. “Ya gotta forgive my bro, sometimes he’s a little slow.”

“Hey, I run super-fast!” Bobby protested.

Zac, Joe and I all giggled. I tried not to, really I did, but it was funny.

“And I’m funny!” Bobby said with his chest puffed and pointing to himself.

Zac looked around our kitchen. “Hmm, pretty normal kitchen,” he said, as he put me down on the counter next to the fridge.

I pointed to the kitchen table. “Sometimes Mom works on her latest invention up here on that table.”

“Oh, is that where she invented the poop thing?” Zac asked.

I shook my head. “Nope, she actually did most of the work in the basement on that one. She said poop and food don’t mix.”

“Your mom is right on that one,” Joe said. “She is one smart lady.”

“Where’s the shrink ray?” Zac asked, looking around like he expected to find it in the kitchen.

Pointing down, I said, “In the basement. Mom keeps most of her gadgets down there, especially if they might be a little dangerous.”

“Can I see it?” Zac asked, eyebrows raised.

Okay now, my best instincts told me, Bella this is not a good idea. In fact, Bella this could be a really bad idea. I mean come on Bella, this shrink ray has done you no good so far. You foolishly shrank yourself and your BF to two inches tall. Part of me knew the foolish bit made sense.

But then my more daring side kicked in. Come on Bella. This is a great adventure. You’re actually a science hero. You and your BF are the first people ever to shrink to two inches. Yes, you are pioneers. You two can be famous! Plus, think about it, getting shrunk got you closer to Zac, the cutest boy in the Universe. (My daring side might exaggerate from time to time.) But it did make many good points.

Joe looked at me and groaned. “Oh, she’s thinking again…”

Zac looked at me and put his hands together. “Please, Bella. I’ve always wanted to see a cool scientist’s lab.”

Part of me wanted to say, dude, it’s really just a basement with a bunch of stuff in it. And with most of the stuff, I don’t really know what it does. But a bigger part of me looked into Zac’s big dreamy eyes and said. “Let’s have a look!”

Joe slid across the counter to me. He leaned into me. “Bella, are you sure this is a good idea? Your mom has always said…don’t bring people down into the basement.”

“Well, you are people and I brought you!” I retorted.

“Yeah, she makes an exception for me.” He thought for a moment. “And look how that turned out!”

“We’re explorers, Joe. We’re exploring the vast unknown!” I insisted.

“No, we are not. We’re exploring our neighborhood! Which we’ve made incredibly more dangerous to ourselves by shrinking ourselves!” Joe said, arms crossed.

“So we’re brave adventurers!” I said.

Joe shook his head. “No Bella, we’re just two kids who bit off more than they can chew. Admit it, we did something dumb.”

I knew Joe had a point. In fact, he had a good point. We had done something dumb. But now was my chance to turn a dumb thing into something great. I could really impress Zac.

“Sure Zac,” I pointed to the basement door. “The basement is that way! Pick me up and I’ll give you a tour.”

Zac grabbed me and quickly walked to the door. Bobby grabbed Joe and followed. Zac popped the door open, revealing the long dimly lit staircase. Zac started down the stairs.

  “Wow, so cool!”

Bobby hesitated. “Ah, I don’t like the looks of that place. It’s too dark!” he admitted.

Zac stopped on the stairs and he turned to Bobby, “Don’t be a chicken.”

“I’m not being chicken. I’m being careful!” Bobby said.

The kid actually made a good point.

“Joe buddy, do you want to go down in the basement with us?” Zac asked.

I’ve got to admit, I kind of hoped that Joe would say no. But of course, Joe answered. “Yeah, I think I should.”

Zac walked back up the stairs, he held open his hand. Bobby placed Joe in his hand.

Zac slowly and carefully brought us down the stairs into the basement. Sure enough, the shrink ray was right where we had left it in the middle of the basement floor. Zac’s mouth dropped open. “Wow, it looks so cool! Like something out of a sci-fi movie.”

I grinned. “Yep, my life is a sci-fi movie.”

Zac put us down on the table next to the shrink ray. He started walking around it.

“Hey, I don’t like being all alone up here!” Bobby shouted from the kitchen.

“Then come down!” Zac shouted back up the stairs. “I turned the lights on.” Zac went back to walking around the shrink ray. “So this is what shrunk you guys, huh?”

  I nodded.

“Hence the reason it’s a shrink ray,” Joe said.

“Why did your mom invent a shrink ray?” Zac asked.

“Probably to help with storage and transportation,” I answered.

  “Ah, that’s smart.”

I turned towards the stairs. Bobby inched his way down. He walked like an adventurer, worried his next step would be into quicksand. That was until he saw the bright, shiny shrink ray. His eyes popped open. He skipped down the stairs. He raced over to the shrink ray.

“Wow, this is so cool!” He said, mouth agape. He pointed to the trigger button. “What does this do?”

  “No don’t tou….” I started to say.

  ZAPPP!

I looked down from the table at Zac. He was now two inches tall.

“Oh so cool! I rule!!” Bobby said.

Well, the good news was, we were home. We just needed to wait for Mom to come and fix this. Bobby could explain to Mom what had happened and all would be well. The tricky news was that our fate was once again in the hands of a five-year-old! But hey, we could handle this. Right?
