Marly shivered again. She tried to tear her gaze from his, but couldn’t.

  “I care about you, Marly.”

“I care about you, too,” she admitted. “I’ve never felt this way about anyone before, but—”

  “But?”

“I’m not sure I’m ready for it. Deacon, you scare me. This thing you can do with your mind…” She ran a hand through her short hair. “It’s terrifying to think of someone having that kind of power over me.”

“I understand that. I do. But what you don’t seem to understand is that you’re the one with all the power here. You’re the one who has control over our future. You tell me to leave, I will. You tell me never to come back, I won’t. But before you say anything I think you should know that…”

  Marly caught her breath. “Yes?”

He took her hand. The contact made Marly’s stomach flutter, made her heart beat even harder. “I’m already half in love with you. And falling harder every second I’m with you.”

Marly was stunned by the confession. Blindsided by all the emotions storming through her. She didn’t know how to respond, what to say. She lifted her gaze to his. “I’m the one in control? I have power over you?”

  “You have no idea.”

She swallowed. “And…you say you’re willing to abide by whatever I decide?”

  “You have my word.”

“In that case, kiss me,” she said. “And don’t stop until I say so.”

“Already the power is going to your head,” he murmured. But he moved in closer without hesitation until his lips were only inches from hers.

Marly put a hand on his chest to hold him back. “There’s something I should probably tell you first. I think I’m falling in love with you, too.”

And then it was a very long time before either of them spoke again.
