“He wasn't helping if that's what you think.” Tevis sounded wounded. “He wanted to see my special ingredient.”
She grinned. “You really think you've got it, don't you?”
“Yes.” He sounded so certain, so sure of himself, and yet he looked nervous.
She picked up the glass and peered at the contents. “Well, it's the right colour.”
Placing it back on the table she picked up the long handled spoon and took a mouthful of the ice-cream.
“Umm, that's good.”
Tevis remained silent, watching her every move as she worked her way down through the dessert-like drink.
She wiped the frothy bubbles away from her upper lip as she drained the glass to within two inches of the bottom.
“Delicious.”
From behind the counter, Ivan studied her with a grin on his face.
“Why do I get the feeling Ivan knows something important?”
Tevis simply smiled and watched as she picked up her spoon again.
She poked the bottom of the glass through the pink liquid, sure Tevis wouldn't have been able to work it out. She looked up at him in surprise.
“How did you guess?”
“Your father said the special ingredient had a good deal to do with love.”
“That's not a big clue.”
“No. It took me a couple of days to work it out. It drove me to distraction and then it came to me. I asked myself, 'What would a father give his small daughter to make a milkshake special?' The surprise ingredient is a present, isn't it?”
She grinned and his smile widened.
“Yes. Yes, it is. Dad still puts a present in the bottom of my milkshake when I go home. Little plastic toys like you find in Christmas crackers.” She rattled the spoon in the glass again, trying to determine the size of her gift.
He pushed a small glass of water over to her. “You'll need this. I wrapped it so it wouldn't get too messy.”
She fished the sticky little package out of the bottom of her milkshake. It even had a tiny sliver of cellophane ribbon around it. Carefully she dipped the little parcel into the water and pulled it out again.
“Aren't you going to open it?”
“I'm savouring the moment.”
“Open it, Claire!”
Placing it on the table top, she pulled at the little bow and the parcel fell apart revealing the contents. She looked up at Tevis.
“Is this what I think it is?” The lump in her throat made it difficult to speak.
Tevis picked up the delicate diamond encrusted ring. “I had this created especially for you. There isn't another one like it in the world.”
Her heart was racing and her mouth was dry. She couldn't take her eyes off his as he held the ring up.
“Claire, my love. Will you marry me?”
She looked at him, her brain and her mouth refusing to co-ordinate. This man who would do anything in his power to protect her, who would follow her to the ends of the earth if she asked him, was looking at her with uncertainty, unsure of how she would respond.
“Tevis Drummond, I love you,” she beamed. “Yes, I'll marry you.”
He leant across the table, put his hand behind her head and pulled her to him and kissed her passionately.
“Contract sealed,” he murmured against her lips.
