“It was incredible. How on earth are you able to do that?” She aimed her questions to the more receptive Lucan.

“We’ve been able to do it since—”

“We don’t know what you’re talking about,” Dario cut in before his partner could reveal more. “There was a lot happening on the beach today and you may have confused us with someone else. We don’t have time for your competition. And since we’ve got a long day of travel ahead of us tomorrow, we’ll have to ask you to leave.”

That was it. They weren’t going to share their secret with her. But why would they? She had to find one last opportunity to get them to open up.

“Of course, I’m so sorry to have bothered you. Mind if I use the ladies’ room before I leave?” As before, she didn’t wait for permission before sashaying toward the restroom. What were they going to do? Tackle her? Besides, she’d almost enjoy being tackled by Dario. Imagine if his towel fell off.

Once inside the restroom, she took a moment to run through ways to get to Lucan alone. He seemed like her only chance. Mona lowered the toilet seat cover and sat down to reflect. How was she going to get him away from his companion? Lucan seemed open to discussion. If only she could get him to come to her. But he would have to know where she lived for that to happen. Then she struck upon the idea of leaving her purse behind. Somehow, she felt he would be gallant enough to return it. If he came to her house to deliver her purse, they would have time to talk. She almost squealed with delight at the plan. It might just work.

But what if it didn’t? Then she’d lose her credit cards and driver’s license. But she needed something behind so he would have her address. She removed her credit cards and checkbook. Fortunately, she also had an expired license at the bottom of her sack. With a little rummaging, she extracted it from the morass of makeup, brushes, old receipts, brochures and other odd bits and ends. She always made sure to buy a large and impressive Louis Vuitton handbag to give the world the impression that she had it together. Luckily, no one could peek inside and discover that she lived like a pack rat.

She tucked her valid license, checkbook, and credit cards into the straw pannier that she used for carrying her beach paraphernalia.

After placing her handbag between the toilet and the wall, she then remembered to flush. When she walked back into the room, everything was as she expected. Dario remained icy cold, responding to her ‘goodbye’ with only a grunt.

In contrast, Lucan said ‘So long’ with a wistful air. He even gave a slight bow as he opened the door for her. That’s it, she thought. I’ll hear from him tonight.

THE HOURS PASSED slowly. Hoping that she would hear a knock on the door from Lucan at any moment, Mona was unable to concentrate on her book. She tried the television, but it provided little distraction. Finally, after midnight, she realized that her plan hadn’t worked. At least I didn’t leave my credit cards in my purse, she consoled herself.

Resigned, she then slipped into a pink, silk babydoll and went to her bathroom to complete her nightly ritual before bed. She always took the contact out of her left eye before removing her makeup. Mona had been born with a blue eye and a green eye, a medical condition known as heterochromia iridum. When she was a child, she became very self-conscious of the way people stared at them while talking to her. From an early age, she had started to prefer wearing sunglasses at every opportunity. This led to more than one near death accident in several dark stairwells. Finally in High School, she had used money saved from working at the state fair to find an ophthalmologist who provided the solution. From then on, she wore a yellow tinted contact that color adjusted her blue eye, making it a perfect match for the green one on the left. None of the people she worked with at the library knew she had two eyes of different colors. And none of the boyfriends she had tried dating in L.A. had ever lasted long enough for her to be willing to share this aspect of herself. It was her secret.

Mona popped the contact from her cornea onto the tip of her outstretched index finger. She found the lens case depleted so she reached over for the bottle of fluid. The doorbell rang startling her and the contact went flying from her fingertip.

“Crap,” she moaned as she fell to knees to look for it. Why did her floor have to be yellow and green tile? The last time this happened, it took her forty minutes to find the damn thing. The doorbell rang again with a long, persistent chime. Someone was holding their finger on the button as if to let it be known that they weren’t willing to wait much longer. Knowing that it had to be Lucan, she decided to come back and search for the lens later. She could always buy another contact, but she might never see him again.

She scampered to the door and pulled it open. Mona peered into the interior courtyard. She lived in an old building that had been constructed like a three-story, square doughnut but still followed the basic no-frills approach of dingbat architecture. Inside the courtyard, the two upper stories had elevated walkways that allowed access to the apartments. Whoever had rung the doorbell was no longer on the walkway to her apartment. She ran to the railing and saw a figure leaving the courtyard. She sprinted along the gallery and hustled down the stairs. At the corner of the building, she hollered, “Lucan… I’m here!”

Under a streetlight, the man who spun around to face her turned out to be Dario. The surprise of finding him instead of Lucan made her instantly self-conscious. She suddenly realized that she had run outside in her babydoll, which hung down just one inch below her rump. And she wasn’t even wearing panties. Even though she typically showed more skin at the beach, she felt naked and vulnerable out in the chilly night air.

“Nice try.” Dario approached with her purse in his hand.

“Oh, thank you for bringing my purse,” Mona said with an air of innocence.

“Lucan is such a goody-two-shoes. He would have insisted on bringing it to you if I hadn’t found it first. Your little plan almost worked.”

Mona’s heart sunk thinking that she might have had a chance with Lucan. Although she found Dario more attractive, his air of cynicism made it clear he had no interest in her.

“Was it that obvious?” she asked.

“Invalid driver’s license and no credit cards?” Dario scoffed. “You could have just written ‘Call Me’ on your forehead.”

Dario stepped in under the streetlight, handing Mona her purse. Defeated, Mona tried to match his tone, “Well, if you think it might get me a more receptive delivery man, I’ll use your method next time.”

Dario’s intense blue eyes met Mona’s and he exclaimed, “Your eyes!”

Reflexively, she turned her head away. It had been many years since she had felt the shame of her physical trait. She couldn’t even think of a clever retort and the flight instinct began to rise within her. But as she began to turn on her heels, Dario reached out with his right hand and cupped her under the chin, pulling her face up into the light. He did it so gracefully that she offered no resistance. His powerful hand had a sensual velvet touch. Dario peered at her eyes with an inscrutable expression, and she became breathless.

“Where the sea meets the earth. That is how you shall know her.” Dario’s voice had a solemn tone.

Quickly, Mona became self-conscious again. What did he want from her? She began to realize that no one had ever dared to physically take hold of her without her obvious consent. But deep down, she wanted his hands on her. She became afraid of her own pent up desire crying to be unleashed. Her prudish upbringing revolted, telling her to draw away. “It’s a birth defect. I’ve had to live with it my whole—”

Dario kissed her in mid-sentence. All resistance melted upon the contact of his lips. His mouth fused with her own, and for a minute she forgot her worldly cares. She felt transported to another plane of existence as if the physical world around her were only an illusion.

Her eyes fluttered shut under his enduring kiss. Feeling returned at the delightful caress of Dario’s hands trailing down her back to where he cradled her butt in both
hands. Now, she returned at once to the physical world with a rush of hormones that made her spine tingle. As Dario kissed her, he kneaded her buttocks. Almost instantly she began feeling her feminine juices flowing as emotion overwhelmed her.

Her entire life, she had sought someone who could kiss with such incredible passion. Finally, Dario broke away from the kiss to stare into her eyes once more.

Without even realizing it, she sighed, “Don’t stop.”

Dario laughed. “Don’t worry… you can have as much as you like.” Then he did the most surprising thing of all. In one fell swoop he whisked Mona up off the ground and into his arms. He made her feel as light as a feather and she laughed at the giddy sensation.

“What are you doing?” The surprise in Mona’s voice came out an octave above her normal speech.

“You don’t prefer someplace a little more private?”

Mona blushed. They were under the streetlight for anyone to see. “Ummm… yes, that might be wise. But you don’t have to carry me. I’m a grown woman.”

He chuckled. “As long as you’re in my arms, I’ll decide if I want to carry you. But if you prefer to be in the arms of someone else, let me know.”

She gulped. There was no point in pretending. She longed to stay in his arms forever. Nobody had ever picked her up before, much less carried her. Most of the men she had previously dated wouldn’t have been incapable of being so impetuous. And frankly, they probably wouldn’t have been physically up to it. For Dario, it appeared effortless. Even though she felt a little silly letting him do it, there was something incredibly gallant about the act. It felt as if he were making a declaration of love the same way a married man might carry his wife over the threshold. And as Dario walked back through the night to the open door of her apartment, she felt the enormous strength in his arms. All that rowing out to sea on his surfboard had created muscles like granite under his smooth skin. His scent was as exhilarating as a hot summer wind coming off the sea.

They kissed as he walked with Mona cradled in those brawny arms. Entering the apartment, Dario kicked the door closed. Amazingly, he navigated through the dark without knocking her head into anything along the way. Dario set Mona down softly upon the bed and let her watch as he stripped off his Hawaiian shirt. She had already seen everything back in his hotel room. But somehow, the knowledge that these rippling muscles would soon be pressed against her body made her quiver. She was already wetter than she had ever been. Without her panties, she felt a warm drip of her fluid roll down her thigh. When his shorts came off and she saw his cock, the anticipation became excruciating.

It’s freaking enormous! She had been impressed by its girth before. But up close she almost shuddered at the thought of taking it inside of herself. At full mast, it was longer than any endowment she had imagined a man might possess. Her need made her appreciate the anatomical beauty. Interlaced veins gave it a natural texture, much like an exotic jungle orchid.

As she sat on the edge of the bed, Dario went over and pulled her pink babydoll up over her head. Naked before him, she felt her own sexuality on display. Dario’s eyes lit up as he cupped her generous breasts in his hands. Impetuously, she grabbed his hard cock and pulled it between her luscious globes.

Dario grunted with pleasure when he felt his hardness enveloped by her feminine softness. The contact of two such disparate sensations excited them both. Mona looked down at the tip of his cock now wet with a drop of moisture. She gave it a tantalizing kiss and then licked his taste from her lips. She savored the flavor, a mixture of primeval sea and essence of male.

“I must have you now.” Dario’s voice rumbled with pleasure. He pushed Mona back onto the bed, his full weight coming down upon her.

Instinctively, she spread her legs as he entered slowly, but forcefully. Her flowing juices allowed her delicate passage to stretch around his enormous cock. Her eyes widened and her back arched while he inched into her.

At the same time, he planted his lips firmly upon hers. He inhaled her breath and then his tongue was in her mouth. With abandon, she allowed her very spirit to be overtaken. He began to grind into her while his tongue swirled around her own. The coiled muscles in his back and arms rippled as he penetrated. It was almost too much. Each thrust sent waves of pleasure along with an alarming feeling that her mind was on the brink of overload. Without meaning to hurt him, she dug her nails deep into his back. Her reflexes were no longer entirely her own.

Upon reaching his peak, he pounded into her as his mouth left hers. He stared into her eyes, relishing the connection while she could no longer contain her moaning that grew into a scream. Her body twitched with the blossoming orgasm, and her passage constricted him inciting his explosion that brought her to climax. She felt the warmth of his seed filling her. The exalted look upon Dario’s face was equally rewarding. He collapsed upon her, nestling his head against her neck.

Spent, they clung to each other, inhaling each other’s scent as they relished the moment. With their tension released, fatigue overwhelmed them. Dario rolled off and pulled her to his side. The urge to know more about Dario nagged at Mona. Later, she thought. All she needed now was to soak in this feeling of bliss that would give way to peaceful sleep.

  THREE

MONA CRACKED HER EYES OPEN to find Dario slipping back into his Bermuda shorts. Was she only a moment’s pleasure to him? She couldn’t hide the despair tinging her voice. “Leaving without even saying goodbye?”

“I was just going to wake you,” Dario said as he slipped on his Hawaiian shirt. “You need to come with me.”

“Right,” Mona muttered sarcastically, “And where were you planning on taking me?”

  “To the beach, of course.”

“Ha, ha. It’s four in the fucking morning.”

“Exactly and we’ll get there just in time for your trial before the sun comes up.”

“Trial?” Now this was getting weird. “What the hell are you talking about?”

“We have to enter the sea to determine if you are a true Descendant of Neptune. Get dressed. Unfortunately, among humans we always have to worry about clothing.”

“The ocean’s freezing in the middle of the night! I don’t know what you’re going on about, but I can assure you that I’m not a true whatcha-ma-callit.”

Dario sat down on the bed and caressed her cheek. His attentive touch instantly soothed her. I can get so used to this, Mona thought. He fixated upon her eyes with intense scrutiny.

“After your trial, I will bring you back to meet the Pod and you can take your rightful place next to me.”

Mona’s natural cynicism was muffled by the joy of hearing that her ‘rightful place’ would be next to him, but she still managed to quip softly, “Oh sure, I’ll be right at home among a pod of dolphins. Sashimi for dinner every night. Yum.”

Unfazed, Dario continued, “You are marked as a Descendant. Your blue eye comes from the sea. Your green eye belongs to the earth. At some point before humans invented writing, Neptune slept with one of your ancestors. You should have the gift to breathe the water as air and travel freely between the two realms just as we can, the Dolphinae.”

“Woah, hold on there. Much as I would like to, I guarantee that I can not turn into a dolphin. Nor can I breathe water like air or whatever.”

“Yes, it remains to be proven. That is why we must perform the trial. As we climaxed, I had a sensation that has never come over me before. Never have I been so tired after the act. It felt as if you were pulling my essence into your body. That was a sign you were not just another false positive.”

Another ‘false positive’? Mona reflected on that for a moment. “That means you’ve slept around with other girls with differing eye colors in the hopes of finding your ‘Descendant of Neptune’?”

“The Pod has been searching for more than a century. I have not slept with any myself, but other princes have encountered false positives. It appears that humans can sometimes have two different colored eyes as a gen
etic mutation, but it is rare. And having this trait is no guarantee that one is a Descendant. As I said, the truth often only becomes apparent when they are taken out to sea and they fail the trial.”

“How do you know when they fail?”

  Dario frowned. “They drown.”

  ~ ~ ~

A FEW REMAINING STARS SHIMMERED dimly in the heavens as the night sky began its gradual fade toward dawn. Upon the beach, Dario marched into the waves and was up to his chest before he realized that Mona had remained behind. Terrified, she stood in the surf going in no further than her knees.

“Come on,” Dario urged. “Let’s get out to sea before the humans wake. The morning brings joggers.”

Yeah, I’m in a real hurry to drown. Mona felt frozen in place. She wanted to put faith in Dario’s belief that she could be a Descendant of Neptune, but it seemed too incredible. Without a doubt, she would be just another ‘false positive’. He had coaxed her to the beach by insisting that she would know the truth once she put her feet in the water. Well, now my feet are in the water and the only truth I feel is that I’m scared shitless.

He called to her, “What are you waiting for?”

  “Dario, I can’t feel it.”

He treaded back through the water. “What? You’re telling me that you feel nothing different?”

Different? It’s wet like usual. What am I supposed to feel? Mona shook her head.

“So it’s freezing like you thought it would be?” he asked.

Hey! It’s not. This is the Pacific. It’s always cold. Even during the day, surfers wear wetsuits. This feels like bath water.

Dario came up and put his arms around her waist. “If the water doesn’t feel cold to you, that’s the first sign.”
