“She was in her bed at nine o’clock, but when I peeked in her room a half hour later, she was gone.”

Samuel must have been thinking the same thing I was. “We just went to war with the Caspians on the island not more than an hour ago,” he said. “It wasn’t possible for them to have taken her.”

My grandmother pulled a note from her pocket and handed it to him.

Samuel read it aloud. “The child for the rubies.” He looked up and crumpled it in his hand. “At least they don’t know we have the other two boxes or they would have asked for those too.”

“What fucking boxes and rubies?” Cabot demanded.

I ignored him and looked at Samuel. “It was the woman. The one Georgia’s been seeing at night in her room. She’s a Caspian.”

  Rebecca stood up. “What woman?”

“When I took Georgia back to bed the night of the party, she said she’d been seeing a woman standing in the corner of her room. I thought she was having nightmares.” That wasn’t completely true. I’d believed she was seeing something.

Rebecca let out a growl and charged at me. “You bitch!”

Samuel grabbed her and pulled her away.

I shot Cabot a look. “I told you she was seeing things. I told you to keep an eye on her.”

“Settle down!” My grandmother looked around the room and waited for everyone to get ahold of themselves. She glanced at Rebecca, who still looked like she wanted to rip my hair out. “Especially you. Half the time you act like you couldn’t care less about your own daughter, so don’t start acting like a mama bear now.”

After everyone calmed down, Samuel looked at his mother and had a silent conversation with her. When they were done, he slowly looked around the room at everyone before turning to me. “It’s time, Morgan.”

A kaleidoscope of butterflies suddenly fluttered in my stomach. “Time for what?”

“Vikktor isn’t dead. And now that his master plan has been ruined, he’ll be bringing in reinforcements. No more scouts. The New York invasion is about to start. If we’re going to get Georgia back and win this war, we’re going to need a weapon bigger than any of us. It’s time to find your mother.”

My legs went weak. Jakob steadied me and shot Samuel a furious look. “What the hell are you talking about?”

“You know as well as I do, Jakob. An immortal never really dies; an immortal transitions. Katherine is out there somewhere, and we have to find her before Ryker does.”
