“Everyone does, Kristen. I guess the important thing is that we can move forward from this. Do you think we can? Do you want to?”
“I know we can. And thankfully, Steve woke up and will be fine and I won’t have that looming over my head.”
“He’ll be fine and arrested for violating his restraining order too,” he said. “Are you okay with that?”
“I have to be,” she said. “I have to trust you and what you say is right in this instance.”
“We’ll get through it together. All of us together. What do you say? You in this with me?” he asked.
“You know I am.”
Epilogue
The last day of school, Landon picked Chloe up and rushed to the SUV with her.
“I can’t wait to see Kristen’s face.”
He smiled. He couldn’t wait either. He wasn’t sure who was more excited right now, he or Chloe.
“We get to see it together. I can’t believe you kept the secret.” He’d been nervous she’d slip up, but damn it all, he’d been proud of her on more than one level in the almost year she’d lived with him.
“Surprises are fun and I wouldn’t want one ruined, so I didn’t want to ruin it for Kristen.”
Together they drove to Hartman’s, parked in the back and walked around front. Kristen was with a customer, but Olivia had come forward and winked at him.
“Just come on back. I’ll bring it out. We’ll give Kristen a second to finish up with what she is doing. Chloe, there are cookies back there if you want one.”
“I do,” she said and took off running, grabbed one and came back before Kristen was done.
“What are you two doing here?” Kristen said. “I thought you’d be celebrating with it being the last day of school.”
“We are,” Chloe said, bouncing up and down, cookie crumbs falling to the floor.
“What are you celebrating here?” Kristen asked, grinning at him. The grin that she always sent his way when she was flirting in the beginning. When he wasn’t sure he had the time to spend with her.
When his life was a mess.
But she cleaned it up well with her ways.
“Here you go, Landon,” Olivia said.
“What’s that?” Kristen asked, eying the box that was just placed in front of him.
He slid it in front of her. “Just picking something up from Olivia.”
Kristen pulled it forward and opened it up to see the square cut diamond winking at her with amethyst stones wrapping all the way around the band. “This is stunning,” she said, her eyes starting to fill.
“Do you like it?”
“Yes. I just said it was stunning.”
“Good, then my buddy’s wife will love it.”
Her jaw popped open and he almost felt bad saying that, but Chloe pinched his arm. “Uncle Landon, that is mean. You made Kristen sad. Look at her eyes.”
He laughed. “Okay, okay. Wow, I can see I’m going to be outnumbered in the house.” He walked around to the other side of the counter, picked her hand up and pulled the ring out of the box. “Here’s the deal. This is for you. This is for us. I love you and want to marry you and I hope you’ll say yes.”
She threw her arms around his neck, kissed him fast and screamed, “Yes! Put that gorgeous ring on my finger.”
Chloe ran over and hugged both of them and then looked up at Kristen to ask, “Does this mean you’re my aunt too.”
“It most certainly does!”
