Sell My Soul

“You’re the posh guys from London,” the only vaguely savvy one of them commented. “The politics ones.”

“Politics?” I laughed. “You’ll find out exactly what we’re involved with if you hang around much longer.”

He nudged the guy next to him and flashed a glance. I knew then that I had them without having to get my hands too fucking dirty.

“You must be connected to the Bridstows,” I continued. “From Portsmouth way.”

Two more pairs of eyes opened wider.

“If you aren’t part of them, you really should be. They’ll be more than happy to hear my report on how you touched my property without consent.”

“Hey,” the guy on the right said and shot his eyes to the guy dangling limp from me. “We can’t fuck off the Bridstows. Let’s fucking talk about it, yeah? Take it up back up with the Phoebe girl and forget about her sister?”

“That would be a very wise move,” I said. “Why don’t you help her to her feet now and hand her over?”

I took my chances and launched the prick from my arms, bowling him like a sack of potatoes into the legs of the others. They sidestepped as he hissed for breath, rubbing his sorry neck like he was checking he still had one.

I held out my hand to little Miss Emmerson with a stare like death as one sorry asshole reached down and pulled her to her feet.

She could barely move, legs a mess as she pushed off him and stumbled towards me.

I grabbed her hard, fingers crushing her upper arm as she pitched herself to my chest.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I’m so sorry.”

“Her bag and her books,” I said to the cunt who’d picked her up for me.

The others stared dumb as he bent down to gather them. Paige held out a hand for her bag as he offered it, but I took it before she had the chance.

“Are we done here?” I asked the crowd, and three of them nodded.

It was only the butt ugly asshole on his knees who had something to say about it.

“Her sister still owes us fucking money!” he said. “I don’t give a shit who you’re connected to. We’ll be getting what’s owed.”

“That’s between you and her fucking sister,” I said. “But this girl here belongs to me. Touch her again and it’ll be the last fucking thing you ever fucking do.”

I didn’t hesitate to turn my back.

Didn’t give a shit for pacing away and dragging Paige with me without a second glance.

She was whimpering as we exited the alleyway, straining to meet my eyes as I shunted her along to the car parked up outside the garages.

“Thank you,” she bleated. “Thank you so much for saving me!”

And that’s when I saw fucking red.

I slammed her into the side of my car with such force that she likely wished she was still in the fucking alley with those dickheads.

My hand was on her throat before she could stumble, my face in hers with eyes on fucking fire as I channelled the rage and cut off her oxygen.

“I’m sorry,” she spluttered. “Believe me, I’m so sorry. I couldn’t stop. She’s my sister.”

“Sorry won’t cut it in a million fucking years,” I snarled and loosed my grip.

She nodded. She actually fucking nodded. Sucking in breath through a raspy windpipe as she recovered.

  And then she started again.

“It’s love,” she whispered. “Love makes us do crazy things. Love made me walk into that alleyway and take what was coming. Love made me put it all on the line to save her.”

If I believed in love for one fucking millisecond, I could’ve said the same fucking thing about me.

But I didn’t believe in love.

Didn’t believe in one fucking sliver of it.

I opened the passenger door and threw the girl in there, threw her bag in after and slammed the door closed with such force that the noise echoed like thunder around the garages.

I daren’t even look at my buzzing fucking phone as I threw myself behind the wheel and fired up the engine.

“I mean it,” she said from the backseat. “I really am sorry.”

“Oh, you fucking will be,” I snarled right back at her.

“Drop me anywhere,” she blurted. “I can walk back in a few hours.”

  I laughed.

  How I fucking laughed.

“I won’t be fucking dropping you anywhere,” I told her. “Your sixty days begin right here. Right fucking now. Prepare to pay your fucking dues.”

  “But my sister…” she began.

“Your sister can go fuck herself, Miss Emmerson,” I snarled. “Believe me, you have bigger things to worry about.”

She didn’t argue. Didn’t make a sound, in fact, just buckled herself in for the ride with trembling fingers.

Just as well the girl didn’t know what was coming.

She’d wish she’d have stayed in that fucking alleyway when I was fucking done with her.

  END OF PART ONE

  Afterword

I hope you’ve enjoyed the first part of Paige and Brandon’s story.

Their wild ride has only just begun.

I hope you’ll stay holding tight for the rest of their journey.

I promise their next instalment will be along soon.

  Acknowledgements

My acknowledgements this time around are going to be a little different to my usual way of saying thanks.

The same credit is due to the same amazing people for their help in the production of this novel, you know who you are, and thanks.

But this time there has been a whole load more happening behind the scenes.

Many of you may know already that I lost my partner Jon suddenly to an aortic dissection back in March of this year.

He’d been at my side through every part of life since I was eighteen years old.

I thought he’d be there a few decades longer.

There aren’t words in this world that could cover how much his loss has shattered me since I found him gone that morning.

There also aren’t words in this world that could cover how beautiful humanity has been to me these past few months as I’ve struggled to keep on going.

Family, friends, book associates. Fellow authors, bloggers, readers. Friends of friends, acquaintances, random strangers who’ve crossed my path in passing and learned my news.

People have been incredible to me.

  Kind, compassionate, supportive beyond measure.

I will never, ever be able to express my gratitude to so many of you for helping me through this.

From the bottom of my heart, from my very soul, with every shimmer of life left within me, I thank you all.

  About the Author

Jade has increasingly little to say about herself as time goes on, other than the fact she is an author, but she's plenty happy with this. Living in imaginary realities and having a legitimate excuse for it is really all she's ever wanted.

Jade is as dirty as you'd expect from her novels, and talking smut makes her smile.

She lives in the Herefordshire countryside with a couple of hounds.

She has a red living room, decorated with far more zebra print than most people could bear, and fights a constant battle with her addiction to Coca-Cola.
