I watched as Matthew paced around the room. He had that extremely aggravated look on his face—the one he had when he gave out a good beating.

“It makes me wonder about you—how many clients you’ve had, and haven’t told me about… How much money you’ve actually stolen from me. Was I not good to you? Did I not get you out of the god damned fucking gutters?”

Matthew started to yell. He violently pushed a lamp off of a side table, smashing it against the floor.

“I saved your fucking life! You owe me everything! And you just leave me—Take my money and fucking leave me!”

Tears began to form in my eyes. I’d never seen him this angry. A terrible sense of dread crossed over my body. He was going to do something horrible.

“Take that sock out of her mouth—and if she screams, kill her,” Matthew told his henchman.

The suited man reached down and pulled the sock out of my mouth. I gasped for a decent breath of air.

“So now, we need to come to some sort of agreement—some sort of arrangement. Some kind of repayment program, if you will.”

“I never stole anything from you.”

“Don’t go through this again, Haylee-I don’t want to hear it.”

“Do you honestly think you saved me? Does that make you feel good about yourself—help you sleep at night?” I asked. “You made me a prisoner. You made me a sex slave. My life has been miserable. You brainwashed me into thinking you were some kind of hero, when you were actually just some sleaze ball, used car salesman.”

Matthew tried to contain his anger, but he failed. He grabbed an entire dressed and threw it angrily onto the ground, smashing it.

“You’re just a second rate pimp and a petty crook,” I said.

Matthew took a deep breath in. He seemingly calmed himself down a little bit before going completely off the rails. He looked at me.

“Okay, well let’s just get this over with then,” Matthew said.

He pulled a pistol out from his waistband and then he turned to Axel. He lined up his shot.

  “No!” I cried out.

  Bang!

Matthew shot Axel right in the chest. Axel let out a loud cry before going completely silent.

  “Axel!” I screamed. “Why?!”

“So,” Matthew started, “let’s talk about what we’re going to do now—because I don’t think I can just take you back, because you’ll just run away on me again.”

  “You’re a horrible bastard, Matthew,” I said.

“Yeah—Yeah, I’ve heard it all before.”

  “You killed him!” I cried.

“Really? Is that what I did? Thanks for letting me know—I didn’t realize that’s what I did.”

  “Fuck you,” I said.

Matthew aimed the gun at me.

“I liked you, Haylee. I liked you a lot. You were a good worker. I don’t know where you went wrong,” Matthew said.

“Just pull the trigger, Matthew. I’d rather be dead than have to look at your face another minute,” I said.

  “Alright,” Matthew said.

  Bang!

A gunshot rang through the motel room.

  Chapter 10

  On The Road Again

After a moment, Matthew dropped to the floor, dead. His henchman turned around swiftly, trying to locate the source of the blast.

  Bang!

The henchman dropped to the floor. I looked over at Axel—He was still unconscious from his gunshot wound.

Then, someone started to crawl in through the window—It was Hunter, holding his long rifle. He ran over to Axel and started to pull off his shirt.

“Stay with me, buddy,” he said to Axel. “He’s still alive,” he said to me.

I pulled myself to my feet.

“The bullet missed his heart. Axel—Can you hear me?” Hunter asked.

I grabbed a phone and started to call the ambulance.

Hunter put pressure on the wound.

  “H—Hunter?” Axel said.

  “Yeah, bud?”

  “Why did you save me?”

  “You’re my brother,” Hunter said.

Axel reached up his hand, and Hunter grabbed onto it.

  “Is Haylee okay?” Axel asked.

  “Yeah—She’s here. She’s fine.”

  “Axel?” I said.

  “Haylee?”

  “I love you Axel—Please don’t die.”

Axel smiled. I could hear the ambulance approaching.

“I love you too,” Axel replied.

“You’re gonna make it, buddy. Just hold in there,” Hunter said.

Hunter looked over at me. “I need to get out of here—There are guys hunting you down—I’ll lead them south. When Axel is okay, go north.”

  “O—Okay,” I said.

“Start a life together,” Hunter said as he stood up. “Put pressure on this wound until the paramedics get here.”

I walked over to Axel and pressed my hand down on his bloody wound.

Hunter looked me in the eyes for a moment. “Take care of him,” Hunter told me.

  “I will,” I said.

Hunter turned to the door, and took off.

Moments later, the ambulance pulled up to the motel. The paramedics ran in, and took over in tending Axel.

  * * *

Axel was released from the hospital a few days later. As per Hunter’s advice, we headed north. We rode for days, through the mountains and into Canada. We found a cute little town up north, on the west coast. It was quiet, and simple—but it was perfect.

The perfect place to start a life together—a real life, where we could be free of our past.
