“No,” I answer again without pause for delay. Marcus may be harboring guilt for my attack, but I know he isn’t responsible for what happened in the alleyway Saturday night.
Richard’s head bobs up and down as the confusion in his eyes rapidly morphs to challenging. “So if I were to knock on the door of Marcus’s Florida residence, you wouldn’t be there?”
A rush of nausea churns my stomach, but I keep my expression neutral, remembering what Marcus said when we arrived here four days ago: no one is aware of this location—not even the scheming paparazzi.
I lift and lock my eyes with Richard’s, my determination the strongest it’s ever been. “No. I wouldn’t be there,” I lie, my tone as devious as the smirk etching onto Richard’s face.
“Okay,” Richard sighs heavily. “I guess we are about to discover if your eyes really are the gateway to your soul, Cleo.”
My breathing turns manic when the shrill of a doorbell booms into my ears not even two seconds later. It didn’t just come from outside Marcus’s office. It sounded through the computer monitor as well.
