“She is. And you remember Robin, right? From the dog shelter where we got Jet? She’ll be there with her fiancé, Brian.”
“So then I’ll know a few people,” he said.
“You don’t strike me as the type of person who worries if they know someone at a party. But you know Ryan and you’ll meet his new family. They’ve got two little French bulldogs and I bet Jet loves playing with them.”
“Speaking of that. Are you sure it’s okay to bring Jet?”
He hadn’t wanted to, knowing it’d be one more thing he’d have to deal with, but she insisted a lot of people brought their dogs. “It’s fine. Harris doesn’t bring Nicks though because they do too much running around and though Nicks is a baby like you’ve met, some people are nervous around him.”
He’d been around the boxer mix a few times in the past couple of months. It seemed like Sarah and he were getting closer and closer and he was at the point that he was sick of waiting.
He wasn’t getting any younger and had this all planned out for weeks now. He was pretty sure she wasn’t going to expect it in the least and that was the way he wanted it.
“That’s true. Speaking of nervous,” he said, grinning, “let me ask you something.” She had her back to him, so he got down on one knee.
“Sure,” she said, turning to stop packing and look at him. “Holy shit.”
He started to laugh. “I hope that is a good swear word.”
“What are you doing, Caden?”
“Seriously? It’s not obvious. Good Lord, you might make me reach for the antacids.”
This time she started to laugh. “I’m so sorry. You wanted to ask me something.”
“Maybe not now,” he said. “You might say no. I’m not used to being told no.”
“Ask me,” she said, bouncing on her toes. “I’m not saying no. Not happening. Ask me now.”
He grinned and opened his palm to show her the ring. “Sarah Walker. The woman who made me laugh and distracted me when I felt like an idiot with a cut hand. The woman that I had to get to know more and realized now it was just love at first sight. Will you marry me and show up at this picnic as my fiancée and not my girlfriend?”
She put her right hand to her mouth and was nodding her head furiously as she extended her left hand. “Put that ring on my finger.”
“Not until I hear the word,” he said.
“Yes!”
He slid the heart-shaped diamond on her finger, then stood up. “I’m giving you my heart to hold. To care for. To watch over. Are you up for that task?”
“I can’t believe I ever thought you wouldn’t open up or didn’t show a lot of emotions. That has to be the most romantic thing I’ve ever heard. And yes. I’m up for anything as long as you are right there with me.”
