"That sounds fine. Seven. Meet me here?"
"You can count on it."
And with that, I smiled and walked out. I forgot to say goodbye to Steve, but I was sure he'd understand.
Outside the coffee shop, just around the corner and out of sight, I let the grin that had been forming loose, and smiled the first truly genuine smile I'd had in days.
People hurried past on their way to work, early shoppers squared their shoulders for some serious spending, and me, I ducked down into an alley, twisted the ring on the Teleron, and stepped out into my kitchen.
"That's it, you have to clean up, right now," I gasped as I took in the carnage.
Vicky turned and glared at me, then at the chaos, and then burst into tears.
George rushed in, babbling about Sasha having gone missing, my wards began to scream, some fault or other that happened now and then, the overloaded dishwasher smoked, rattled, then leaked soapy water all over the tiles, and a clearly insane woman prancing about in a leotard on Vicky's fitness workout show on the small TV shouted louder and louder for everyone to "Push it!"
Then the girls darted in, screaming about the bath overflowing, and as water dripped onto my hat through the ceiling, I just looked at my watch and counted down the hours until seven.
Just another day in the life of The Hat. But at least I had a date.
