A Grand Murder

“Yeah, so I’m on administrative leave. What does that have to do with your makeover?”
“So I thought what a perfect time to go on vacation!”
He looked like a child on Christmas morning.
“You won’t miss work because you can’t go to work. So you won’t obsess like you normally would. I called my buddy at work, and he said now was as good a time as any to go up to his cabin. Your mother agreed to pick up our mail, and voila! We’re on vacation.”
“Vacation.” The word felt alien on my lips.
“Help me finish packing your things, honey.” He snapped his fingers and pointed at the ceiling. “We’re heading up north.”
“I’m on vacation,” I said. “God help us all.”
Author’s Notes
Anyone who wakes up one day and says, “I think I’m going to write a book” is just crazy. Especially if they think they can write a book on their own.
Writing a book takes a highly specialized group of cheerleaders who are either a) just as crazy as the writer or b) love that person enough to overlook the fact that they are crazy. I have both on Team Stacy and I am so grateful.
I would like to take a moment to thank everyone on Team Stacy because a thank you is cheaper than a gift.
First, thank you so much to my husband who has always supported my insane notions-ALL of them (seriously ALL OF THEM-what a guy!).
Thank you to my daughter who learned early when Mommy is staring at a blank page she is actually “working.”
Thank you to my parents. Mom thank you for not giving up on me when my teachers did-you knew better. Dad thank you for telling me to learn to type, so I would have something to fall back on in case my rock star career fell through-it’s really come in handy.
Thank you to Grandma Gimse. I know you don’t get it but you love me anyway. For that, you are awesome!
Jennifer, my head cheerleader, my lifelong friend, and my sister-thank you for more than I could ever say.
Jim thank you for loving my friend.
Tony S. thanks for giving me great material. You and I will head to Italy and speak Spanish.
The Case family Mark, Nancy and Brian for accepting the craziness that was forced upon you.
Then there are the flag wavers on Team Stacy – Tony J., Joanna, Christine, and Marty – what would I have done without my standard bearers?
Thank you to the people who taught me about law enforcement including the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Department Citizen’s Academy for answering all my creepy questions without arresting me, and Chris Morris for giving me the female perspective. Any mistakes I’ve made in any law enforcement details in the book are not their fault – they tried, they really tried.
If I forgot other cheerleaders, I am sure they will let me know and hold me accountable. I’ll get you on the next book. Promise! Anyway, you know I appreciate everything you’ve done for me and I love you all.
Lastly, I want to thank everyone who every told me I couldn’t, that I wasn’t good enough, anyone who sneered in derision, mocked my ambition and laughed at me. You should know that only fuels the crazy. You all created an endless fire that pushed me forward. Thank you to all of you – I am so very grateful.
OH! And before I forget – to the agent who told me she only represented work with “merit” – bite it sideways sweetie! Those of us who like meritless crap one finger salute you. I am grateful to even you. I couldn’t have done it without you.
