Rule Breaker

“Whatever,” she grumbled. “Try being ten thousand months pregnant and confined to a stupid bed.”
I laughed. “You know you love every minute of it.”
“I do, but I don’t have you to share it with,” she whined.
The weight of the previous conversation shifted. Thank goodness, no more talk about Lex or me.
“I’ll be home soon and come massage your fat feet and keep you company until my nephews come into the world.”
“I’ll hold you to it. By the way, do me a favor and tell Max that pregnant women can run companies, too.”
“Oh no, I am not getting in the middle of that one with a ten-foot pole.”
“Well someone needs to keep on top of our company.”
I hope she hadn’t meant that the way it came out. “I may be here in Italy, but that doesn’t mean I’m not doing my share of the work. I did negotiate the extension of the software contract, if you recall.”
“I wasn’t referring to you, grumpy. I’m talking about my shit.”
I wasn’t the grumpy one!
“Ari, the R & D department is in great hands. Relax. Jane has it under control. You’re lucky Max let her transfer to our ranks. She was the best technology officer Max and Carmen ever had.”
“I know. Jane is the only one I’d trust with my research. I’m just ready get out of bed.”
“Enjoy it while you can. I’ve seen the terror my brothers’ kids put their mamas through, and I think my sisters-in-law would pray for a day of confinement to a bed. Besides—” Someone banging on the bedroom door interrupted my thought. “Hold on, Ari.” I pulled the phone away from my face and shouted toward the door, “I’ll be right there.”
“As I was saying, my sister-in—” The banging persisted, even louder. “Uhhh! It’s probably my mother, angry with me for some new infraction. Ari, I’ll call you back. Let me see what’s going on.”
“Don’t forget to call.”
“I promise I won’t.”
“You always say that. It’ll be next week before I get to talk to you again.”
She had me there. I was notorious for forgetting to call. “Love you, bella.”
“You too.”
I hung up the phone, marched to the door, and pulled it open. My very annoyed and windblown sister-in-law, Leena, glared at me.
“Took you long enough to answer the door.”
I scowled back at her. “What the hell is going on? Is there a fire that you tried to break my door down?”
“Milla, you have to be ready.” Leena rubbed her temples and tried to steady her breath. “I ran up here as soon as I found out.”
This probably had something to do with Mama. It always had something to do with Mama.
“Okay, you’re scaring me. Please tell me what’s going on.” I glanced at the wall clock behind me. “I’m already late for the gala.”
Leena pushed around me and sat on my bed. “He’s here.”
Okay, that’s a bit dramatic. “Who’s here?”
She opened her phone and showed me a text message:
Please be informed that I have just arrived in Milan. I will spend a few days here and plan to bring my WIFE back home with me. Make sure she is ready to leave.
“Oh shit.”
