  The staff of Birmingham Central Library Local Studies department offered invaluable help with research over the years. I hope my descriptions of the research work carried out there are tribute enough.

  Lorna Rose, David Wake, Jack Turner and James Donaghy worked above and beyond the call of duty as the editorial team whose input made me improve, clarify, edit and rewrite. The entire Touchstone series is a much better work for their patient and tireless input.

  And finally, my biggest thanks go to all the readers who, from the very first part of Touchstone, engaged with my story, wrote reviews, emailed me and inspired me to see this six-part season through to the end, and to continue with the Touchstone universe in the spin-off stories that are planned for the future. I would always have carried on writing about Rachel at least as far as this volume, but their enthusiasm has made the journey so much more rewarding.
