  Justice?

  Then the clarity was gone and his brain was scrambled again. A jumble of various senses and impulses, with only an occasional blink of what might be considered a thought.

  Minutes passed, and something caused him to roll. He found himself floating face down, mouth and nostrils filled with seawater. Far below the surface, the lights of the AquaBase caught his attention and for a moment, his mind seized on a final thought. One simple, perfect thought, clear and illuminating. This was why he’d come here. This was his destiny.

  Without conscious decision, his chest expanded to fill his lungs with water and he began to sink. Eyes wide, mouth stretched in what could pass for a smile. The curved glass below beckoned him, drawing him like a target.

  His brain didn’t process the implications; it only perceived what his organs could sense. But one concept did seem to emerge, bubbling from a place deep inside.

  The lower he went, the faster he sank.
