“Benedict gave me a book a while ago, but we’re going to have to make a trip to Scotland to get it.”

Caleb looked confused, but nodded his head slowly. “Then we’ll go to Scotland.”

They walked in silence for a minute before Jaycen spoke. “I want to kill McKenzie. If I get my magic back or not, I want to kill him.”

“I know I know; I do too. But first, we need to mourn,” Caleb vowed before turning to join the others.

Jaycen leaned forward, pressing a quick kiss on the stone. “I’ll see you soon.” She turned her back on him to join the group.

They were all walking across the field when Jaycen looked back, seeing Azrael still standing at the crypt, his hand pressed against it as he said, “Goodbye old friend. Sleep well, you deserve it.”

He was back by their side in an instant, his voice low as he said, “First we mourn. But after that, we will get our revenge, and we get McKenzie. That I promise you.”

And even through all of her loss, Jaycen felt the slight hint of hope, it was enough, for now.

  Epilogue

McKenzie watched Benedict’s funeral procession from afar, knowing his sister was doing the same. He tried looking for her, but it was no use. She would be well hidden.

Finally, when he had seen enough, he turned to leave. Killing Benedict had never been part of the plan. Someone as violet as him would have had a place in the new world that McKenzie was trying to build. But it was done, there was no going back.

What McKenzie needed to do now was get the knife back. Because within that knife was the power to change everything, a power that could truly tip the scales. A power his sister hadn’t even begun to understand yet. He needed to get to it before she realised what it could do.

McKenzie smiled as he walked the busy street of New York. Maybe he should let his sister take back her magic. Maybe he should let it drive her insane, as it nearly had done before. And then, when she was crushed from the inside out, truly driven insane by the magic and the ghost that haunted her, could he step in and take the magic she would only be too willing to give.

Oh yes, McKenzie had options. And his future looked pure.
