Mutant Rising

Page 23

by Steve Feasey

Although a long time had passed since the exodus, the memories of so many Mutes leaving the Blacklands to find ‘a better place’ still played on the minds of many who had chosen to stay behind.

‘This man – Melk – he won’t stop,’ Tink said in a voice that was barely more than a whisper. ‘Not now. After he’s wiped out those who are on his doorstep, do you really believe he’ll continue to ignore you?’

His cousin gave him a stony look. ‘These children – the ones in our shared vision – they are the root cause of this problem. It would have been better had you not helped that man Silas to rescue them all those years ago. Maybe if we just let Melk do away with them, things would go back to normal.’

  ‘You don’t really think that.’

  ‘Don’t I?’

‘Help us, Corem. Talk to the people of the Blacklands and convince them that they should come to the aid of their kin.’

  ‘Their kin?’

‘Yes! Their mutant cousins. Just as you and I are cousins.’

Corem hissed and shook his head. The two men sat in silence for a while.

‘What are you thinking?’ Tink asked eventually.

Corem sighed. ‘I’m thinking I should have let the Chuni shoot you.’

‘Then you’ll help? If war comes, you’ll help?’

‘We’ll see. That’s all I’ll say to you. We’ll see.’

  About the author

Steve Feasey lives in Hertfordshire with his wife and kids. He didn’t learn much at school except how to get into fights and chat up girls – he wasn’t particularly successful at either – but he was always a voracious reader. He started writing fiction in his thirties, inspired by his own favourite writers: Stephen King, Elmore Leonard and Charles Dickens. His first book, Changeling, was shortlisted for the Waterstones Prize and became a successful series. Mutant Rising is his second book for Bloomsbury and is the sequel to Mutant City.

  Praise for Mutant City

Mutant City will be happily received by Feasey’s many fans and will find an equally appreciative audience in anyone who enjoys X-Men and the other superhero universes

A really well delivered story set in a fantastically dark and futuristic world with imagination and creativity at the height of the genre. This is amazing stuff; I am really looking forward to the next instalment

I really cannot recommend it enough. There’s only really one thing left to ask you: whose side are you on? Are you Pure or are you Mutant?
