In my winter, in my home.
A smile slowly overtakes my face. “I told you the plane was a good spot for a first time,” I whisper to Sven. “Look at how cool that sounded.”
“That did sound pretty cool,” he agrees. “In fact, it was so cool that I think we should high five.”
He holds up his hand. I slap my mitten-covered palm against his, and then burst out laughing. Sven also dissolves into laughter.
“Your dad’s kind of awesome, Mary. Does he always mess with people’s heads like that? I can’t believe he actually just threatened to shoot Seb.”
I shake my head, smiling. “Wanna know a secret? He doesn’t even own a shotgun!”
This causes Sven to laugh even harder.
“I think I get all my acting skills from Dad,” I tell Sven fondly. “He was always playing ridiculous pranks on us, growing up.”
“I hope we’ll get to spend a lot more time here, Mary. With your family.”
The warm and fuzzy feelings in my chest are back at full force. “Speaking of family. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you stand up to your brother like that,” I tell him, tracing my hand over his chest. “It was super sexy and possessive.”
“Well, I’ve never had something worth fighting for,” Sven tells me softly.
Looking around at the darkness of the night, I see that Buttons is pulling away from the light display and heading back to the barn, moving at a slow pace.
“Hey, Sven…” I begin with a naughty smile. “Have you ever had sex in a one-horse open sleigh? Asking for a friend.”
