Future, Betrayed

  “I know.”

  “No, like, I’m terrified.”

  “I know.”

“Are you? You don’t look it.”

  “I am.”

  “You don’t sound it.”

  “I’m shaking in my boots.”

Ben blinked at the blue curtain he couldn’t see behind. Although there wasn’t any pain, intense pressure had him wincing. Dain tightened his grip on his hand.

“I’m ready for this,” he assured Ben. “I’m ready to be a dad.”

  “But I don’t know if I am.”

  “You are.”

Ben gave a weak smile, and a second later, a cry rent the air. Immediately, he started to cry. Tears streamed from his eyes and down his cheeks as his emotions went haywire.

  Their baby was here!

“Oh my God,” he whispered to no one. He’d just gotten used to the idea that he was a freak of nature, but now, he had a person to take care of!

More tugging, pulling continued. He could only imagine what Michelina was doing to his insides and hoped like crazy she knew how to put it all back together. He knew he shouldn’t have watched the C-Sections for Dummies learning vids on her computer.

A moment later, Buffy came around the tented blue sheet with a small bundle in her arms. A smile lit up her face.

“You have a daughter,” she said, awe in her voice.

“A girl?” Ben blinked. “But … but I don’t know anything about girls.”

“Me neither,” Dain said. But he stood and took the mewling bundle and sat back down on the stool he’d been occupying. “But she’s absolutely perfect.”

He moved the blanket, and Ben finally saw his daughter’s face.

“Oh my God,” he breathed. “She’s beautiful.”

  “She is,” Dain agreed.

Ben couldn’t look away. Unconditional love filled him, and he knew whatever the future held, he would protect her with every breath in his body.

  “What’s her name?” Buffy asked.

“I don’t know,” Ben said, crying happy tears.

“Sunshine,” Dain murmured. “Her name is Sunshine.”

“What? That’s a horrible name,” Ben replied with a laugh.

Dain smiled down at the baby. “No, it’s not. Sunshine brought us together, and she’s the bright ray needed on this messed up rock. Sunshine Cardile Stockton. I love you, little one.”
