Anger and Muscles

I can tell you for sure that I never deserved her. She was unsure about ever getting with me, and she was right. She left me, and that was for the best because I was a mess, and if I had stayed in her life, who knows? She wanted to be, what do you call it, a nurse practitioner? Well, I’m sure I would have messed that up for her. Now, with me out of her life, I can only hope she continued with everything, and she’s closer to her goal.
Who can I thank for how good I’m doing today? Alice. She had met Callie, and she liked her. But when I told her I fucked everything up, I had never seen Alice get so mad. She had a long conversation with me, and, she talked sense into me. It took some pressing, but I decided to get help. She helped me choose a place. It was all the way in Texas, and it wasn’t cheap. But she paid for it, worked it out with my job, and got me over there. She wasn’t going to let me get away with any excuses once I said I’d go.
It wasn’t easy opening up to who I am. I had all kinds of moods during the process, and sometimes it seemed impossible to get a hold of myself. But, here I am today, sitting by myself in a coffee shop, feeling good.
I take another sip of my coffee, and it’s then that I see a familiar and beautiful face entering the cafe. It’s Callie, dressed in a nursing uniform! What’s she doing all the way out here?
She sees me right away as you can’t miss me sitting up front like this. She doesn’t look mad. No. She’s smiling; she’s smiling as she approaches me.
I stand. “Callie! Wow! What are you doing out here?”
We hug each other. She feels as good as she did when we were together.
“Korbin . . . oh, my God! You look great. I work out here now. I was hoping that someday I would see you.”
“You work out here?”
“Yeah, Christ Hospital. God, it’s so good to see you.”
“Can you sit with me for a bit? Or, are you working now?”
“Actually, I’m on my way to work, but I have some time. So yes, yes, I can. Let me just get my coffee, and I’ll join you.” Her smile lights me up. She really is happy to see me.
I stare at her as she gets her coffee. She looks back at me, from time to time, while she’s in line. Even in a hospital uniform, Callie looks amazing. She’s as beautiful as she was when I last saw her.
After she gets her coffee, she sits next to me, close enough so that her thigh touches mine. “Soon after we broke up, I went to rehab in Texas,” I tell her. “Been doing good for almost eight months now. I’m really sorry about everything, Callie. “
“I’m sorry too, Korbin. You went to rehab? Wow, that’s fantastic. You look wonderful. I mean, you always did, but you look different now. Those hazel eyes of yours are so chill.” Callie blushes and sips her coffee.
I smile. “I am a lot calmer, Callie. A lot calmer. The anger management classes really helped. What about you?”
“Anger management classes?”
“Yeah,” I laugh. “I bet you never thought I’d take one of those.”
She laughs. “No, but I’m glad you did.”
“So, what about you?”
“Well, I’m still have a ton of schoolwork, but I’m interning at Christ. I’m feeling really good about everything.”
“Good, I was hoping you would say that.”
“And . . . I’ve missed you the entire time,” she says, looking into my eyes. “The entire time.”
“I feel the same way. I’ve missed you too.”
“I would love to have dinner with you tonight, if you’re aren’t doing anything,” Callie says. “I would love to catch up.”
I put my hand on hers, and she takes it. I nod my head. “I’d like that,” I say.
