Terrifying Love: A Halloween Anthology

Inside, the sunlight was pulsating in the centre of my heart. The mould was barely visible any longer at the edges. Instead, the sun was pulsating in the centre of my heart, and with each pulse there was less mould. I felt my heart pulsating stronger, brighter, and then finally, there was no mould left at the edges of my heart. It had been blasted away. I was free.
And in the darkness, I saw your halo. You were bright as well, glowing rather than pulsating, with warmth as well as light. My angel. As I watched you come closer to me, my swaddling felt tighter. There was a weight upon me now, my arms were heavy and could not move, I had lost track of Keith, could feel him no more. I laid on my back, and yet you stood in front of me. You offered me your hand, though I could not lift mine.
Then the rainbow appeared, it bridged across from you to me, yet sprung from me to we. We created it together, and it made us whole. I was not just light I was now warm, swaddled yet comforted from the inside. As if I were drying out in the sunshine. I smiled, feeling my mind swirl with the sheer pleasure of our joining. Our pulsating lights drew closer in time, as my beat matched yours. The beat grew stronger and stronger, echoing through the swaddling, coming from above.
I know now it was the soil being replaced by Keith, and with each spade full of earth it became a heavier prison. But I felt only the reassurance of your embrace. I did not need to breathe, I knew my light was sustaining me, and that yours was available through the rainbow bridge should mine start to wane. So, I did not struggle against the earthly embrace, I welcomed it. The final thuds – were the patio slabs being laid?
I didn’t care. I did not struggle, I drew closer to you. I am now free, and I follow the light. I choose you. I’ll follow you, if you’ll have me.
Chapter Six - The Interviewer
“Thank you. Would you like to clarify anything you’ve said, or add anything else?”
“No.”
“Then this interview is concluded.”
Rebecca lets out a deep breath as I turn the tapes off. She seems sure of her decision, but this doesn’t eliminate the nerves. As she looks at me, there is a whisper of a smile on her lips. It is a mirror of the smile on mine. “Well done, it’s all over now.”
She stands and reaches for my hand. I pause momentarily before I indicate my acceptance of it, knowing that she is about to become joined with me for eternity, wanting her to be sure, needing her last actions to be driven by her own free will and choice. My smile deepens, and is reflected in her eyes. She takes hold of my hand. She squeezes it, and I feel the new lightness of her touch, her pulsing light stronger and more independent, consumed by sunshine. She has no space left for clouds, or for moulds. Just for love. Her soul is freed, and her final choice is to seal herself to me. Her lips graze mine and I inhale her scent. I feel joyously lightheaded at the prospects of what is to come. What I have in store for her now that she has reaffirmed her desire and commitment.
I lead the way out of the interview room, turning to face her as we reach the corridor. It is dark to the right of me, blindingly brilliant to the left. This is the final choice, the route back and the route forward. This last step is where I lead her into the light, towards a new life. Here, in a place into which no darkness will ever fall again.
